I once found a live kitten in a petco dumpster a few years ago. He now lives a happy (and slightly spoiled) life at my neighbor's house! :)

@Eric Mezenberg it's an aqueon aquarium watch for petco's dollar per gallon sale and you can get one for a good price. Generally the dollar per gallon is up to 29 gallons and then above are 50% off the aquarium are just an aquarium. Aqueon does not sell with lids, heaters, nor filters.

The stores often smash up the items or lock everything so you cannot pull their merchandise out and walk around to the front and demand full price refund for it. You would not believe the thousands of dollars worth of merchandise I have had to throw into the crusher/giant dumpster every year.

I wish I had the heart to dig through the trash for stuff. That is a brand new 40B tank which costs $40 during the dollar per gallon sale and like $100 when it's not on. I think an employee or something was "hiding" that there to take home. It does not make sense that they would throw it out when it's perfectly able to be sold. The 40B tanks sell out SO FAST here.

Have you tried diving apartments? It sounds gross, but those people throw out EVERYTHING. It's really bizarre. Apartment diving around colleges at the end of the school year is also amazing.
HappyHandyLife I know what you mean about colleges throwing out stuff. A few years ago, Auburn University was throwing out all the mini fridges from the dorm rooms to buy new ones, someone I knew got a few of them.
HappyHandyLife The best time to dive at apartments is eviction season/spring. We call this eviction season because landlords aren't allowed to evict during the winter and as soon as it's warm they hand notices out like candy on halloween.

Better idea; just ask the store manager to save you a pet aquarium that they take back or take in when people get one delivered. Often returned to store items cannot be resold as new, and if they knew you wanted it with them having to do nothing but put it aside in back room for a couple days, you might get it FREE. Make out a few 3 x 5 cards with your numbers and request on it before you go, and go to 2 or 3 stores.

If you look up "Live Petco animal in dumpster" on TH-cam, you will come across videos showing their harsh and unruly treatment. Please do not take this personally, I just would like to educate you on how Petco really treats their pets.
As if finding dead ones isn’t as bad...the amount of animals they discard is 4 times the amount they sell. They die of negligence and ignorance.

Never underestimate the value of a Disney VHS. I picked up a special Halloween one at a yard sale on a whim a week or so ago for 25 cents (I don't have a cell phone so I can't scan anything). Went to ebay once I got home and the only one there on Auction was at almost $90! I decided to do a buy it now for $80 and it sold in under 24 hours!

Used to work at Petco. Seeing those buckets brings me back. We used them for store use animal supplies. The one that you didn’t know what the stuff was had substrate, like the kind for plants. We added a little water to it and put it in some of the terrariums so they had a slightly moist dirt floor. The perfectly usable tanks are probably returns, so corporate said to toss them. At my old location the manager was cool and gave that stuff to employees.

My sister and brother-in-law use to do cleaning, for a company, that had the dumpsters in the back and they use to fill the car trunk with the bags and drive them to the back to dump them, maybe this guy does the same.

We started collecting our boxes and packing material in recycle dumpsters. We found all kinds of re-usable, sellable stuff, including NEW stuff. But as far as actual business dumpsters we've never done that. We've collected several 'tools' that we use to fetch stuff out of the dumpsters, which we of course collected from dumpster! One is a gaff hook, another is a gadget that we rigged up with like piano wire on a long handle to literally loop around impossible to fetch items (unless you crawl in the dumpster - yuk!). Boy do we understand the RUSH! We found probably 200 or more vintage canning jars w/ zinc lids. Some ignorant person had thrown them in the recyclery, unfortunately breaking about 25% of them.
Pete, I know exactly what you mean and what you are saying, I do the dumpster diving almost daily if i see them and i am not busy, Its a thrill for me and i have hit it big doing it also, One time i hit a dumpster and found 1500 brand new books, I made almost 3K on those books over a period of time. My best dives have been video stores, game stores, computer stores, office stores and book stores. One of my best scores was a desktop PC and 3 laptops in leather cases. Absolutely everything worked.

I would find a shopping cart someone left on a curb and go looking for cans and bottles. I found a good chair one time and someone offered me money for it before I even got it home.

and by the way, the guy in the red car was doing something illegally dumping his trash. We in the trash industry (sold my trash company in January) hate seeing people dumping their trash inside paying customers' carts.
Guys like him refuse to pay for trash pickup, so they use someone else's cart. His county most likely doesn't offer trash pickup, so he needs hire a private company and pay for the service quarterly.

I live about an hour and a half from Eagle Lake Texas. That is where most of the Canadian Geese fly to in the winter . It’s amazing . There literally tens of thousands of them in huge rice paddies.I guess they eat all of the rice that has been left over after the harvest.I love the time Of year that they fly in. It's amazing what great stuff some people throw away. I scored a brand new microwave for my mom a few months ago "diving". It works great, even still had the plastic on the front. I got a lot of other neat stuff at an apartment complex I did security at. Brand new items--just thrown away.

I would have grabbed that first item with the broken glass. Glass panes are crazy cheap at most home centers. You could have picked up enough glass to repair both of those for about $5.

Welcome to the free market economy, where it can cost a company MORE to keep a product for longer than normal and still try to sell it, or put it on clearance, or find an alternate means of turning a profit instead of just dumping it. It's not always about "save all the items," it is about the bottom line. Yes, they could have donated the aquarium (for example) or did something else with it, but that takes time, money, manpower, etc. It is more hassle than it is worth. It's like the old saying, if Bill Gates had a $100 bill fall out of his pocket, he would waste more money taking the time to stop and pick it up than he would gain by getting that $100 back because his TIME is worth so much, even a few seconds of his time are worth more than $100. That's business. Saving ALL resources no matter what can be a useful community mentality and it has it's place in society, but it's a deadly business principle most of the time. Sure those lost resources could mean something to somebody, but they will kill business if the business is the one who continues to be responsible for connecting those resources to people who value them. Communities are rooted in relationships, businesses are rooted in money; sometimes you save more money by letting something go in the trash instead of investing any more resources dealing with it otherwise, regardless of its potential value to others.

Aflal Refai If that was his intention on pretending to find a tank, you would think he would do a better job at hiding it. He probably filmed the first clip after he found the tank and buckets. That also explains the sudden change of weather from the first clip to the diving clips. The day started out cloudy and then sunny in the end when he films the clip at 0:19.

I found a picture with glass and a really nice frame. I took out eveything except the glass and frame, made sure the glass was well glued into place and used it as a lid. It was slightly larger than the aquarium so sat on it perfectly and looked really great. hope that helps. you can find glassed prints often for pennies at a goodwill shop

I was dumpster diving on a rainy day and I found a soggy keyboard piano thing, now since I play piano but couldn't afford one I got that hoping it still works, and it did...its amazing...i found the connector for it too and it works perfectly

Years ago when I worked at Sears the stock boys would put electronics and other stuff they unloaded into the trash and take it out to the dumpster and then retrieve the goods after work . So maybe that's why a nice aquarium is in there.
