Exactly! I've seen that most of the Diamonds (Fanxred's fans) think that the girls are all lesbian only bcs of their style... like, your style is not a sexuality or something. Let's be respectful to idols.
Here we go again.... If you act and look like a cliché lesbian then naturally people will assume you're one, nothing crazy here and you shouldn't feel insulted about it.
ironically a lot of people back in the day thought Amber was being forced to be tomboyish as like a marketing strategy or something, obviously that's not the case for her tho
Yeah SM just happened to find a girl who likes to be tomboyish and let’s her which is nice, I can see why people think that tho SM specifically scouted her because ggs with like a few tomboy members is a thing in China it’s just a lucky coincidence tbh
Yeah, it just sucks to think that there probably are a lot of NB or otherwise gender-nonconforming peeps out there who would love to be a kpop idol, and something tells me they're getting filtered OUT of auditions while their "aesthetic" is getting co-opted on the backend.

This is what I've been thinking. Btw, I'm just curious since I don't know the Dreamcatcher members: are they actually into dark or heavy music themselves, and do they like to dress in dark style clothes?
Honestly, people are out here complaining about the company when it was also the fans fault, like look at what happened to 1kat (i don't know how to spell it), fans didn't even watch the show but jumped at the opportunity to bash demisoda for 1kat's own decision. This is why fans need to calm down when protecting their artists and actually see what's going on.
@@lina9183 oneket chose to do a sexy concept for demisoda's dance competition but fans who didn't watch the show accused demisoda for sexualising oneket
People really shouldn't be force to be what they aren't , just for the "public attention". Each and every individual is unique and what companies should do is to help artist show their brightest side on stage , and communicate their true selves to the public. I am relieved that they are living happy lives now (^~^) And Love you ploopy! You DA best Sis !
As cruel as the word "deprogramming" is already, the practice of unlearning your traits also reeks of conversion therapy, which is known to be very dangerous! I hope the members truly recovered, not just on the outside but on the inside.
I really feel bad for these girls. I was a "tomboy" as a kid (until I realized I was nonbinary lol) and got a lot of pressure to act feminine. It was really rough on me and I can't imagine how I would've felt had I been forced to go along with it for the sake of a career
Same! Was a huge tomboy and punkrock lover. Now I mix feminine clothes with sneakers, punk stuff and boyish hairstyles. Sometimes wish I could go full punk for once but my parents and work wouldn't allow it 😖
Man as a baby lesbian, I was always suuuuuch a big fan of GI but when I first found out about how they were uncomfortable with the entire “boyish” concept and were forced to cut their hair, dress that way, etc I’d made me feel so sad. Nobody should be forced to look a way they don’t like and are uncomfortable with :(
oh god, imagine the amount of gender dysphoria they must have gone through...i remember even amanda bynes saying she went though major situational gender dysphoria and depression while filming/watching herself in "she's the man", and she wasn't even forced to do it, i.e. she could go back to being herself between takes and still had her long hair and mannerisms, etc.
i hope she find a balance bc the9 have talked about continuing promotions after iqiyi drops them and self-promoting but i miss fanxyred since theyre my gg ults
I literally got so excited when she mentioned Fanxy Red! I've been a Diamond (a Fanxy Red fan) for a while, and I think that they are an extremely underrated group.
Lisa loves makeup and cute things she is actually more girly than people think. She was the one who requested to do a couple dance with a male dancer in one of solo performances but her image is more pushed to be the token girl crush boyish member.
True, but Lisa also likes being “tomboyish” (for lack of better words). Lisa is more of a tough girl. It’s like in her recent LiLi film “tomboy” she said she wanted to show she can be sexy/feminine and tomboyish at the same time. She says she can do both and that’s what she’s comfortable with.
I would HATE if I was forced into this. I would be so uncomfortable so I can imagine how it would feel being forced into the public like this while feeling like that.
Kpop idols are people too they can be part of the lgbtq+ community they can dress how they want act how they want do any concept they want but some groups are forced to do concepts they don’t want 😕
Unfortunately, even if their "fans" knew what was allegedly happening bts and that the members were actually quite happy with the new concept change, they would've reacted the same way because they don't really care about what the girls want. Their fans obviously only cared about themselves and what they wanted for the group.
i think early 2010s was an age where fans wouldn't really care about what the group would've wanted. they didn't care for what the idols themselves felt, and thought that the idols' personal feelings shouldn't get in the way of the group's development. if they debuted this year no doubt that whatever fans they would've had *would* actually rally against the company for the girls to get the freedom they deserve. early 2010s fandom atmosphere is really... bad i think, so it was inevitable that the group had crashed and burned the way it did.
Simtong Entertainment actually debuted a boyband after G.I. called 'AlphaBAT'. They also have a unique concept, because the band had 9 members and their stage names are the letters of the Greek alphabet. When they were rookies they had this hiphop/underground/bad boy/Alphamale concept, but later they become cute and reserved. I think their new concept fits their personalities better.
if Global Icon debut in 2021 they would be an insane hit overseas, sadly the concept was too ahead of its time in south korea😭 ofc with willing members, sad the company forced this persona onto them
Crazy Kpop concept idea : When Lee Jung Hyun went from Bakkwo to Summer Dance! She was this powerful edgy techno queen that turned into a early 2000's girly kpop idol. Both times being a trendsetter in both genres (girly concepts like her's was fairly uncommon back then) it would be nice to have the full story as to why that happened!
As someone who was something of a tomboy myself, I remember being super excited about GI when they debuted. We were basically promised a group full of confident girls who didn't care about gender norms and who just were themselves, but instead we got a group of girls who were so clearly uncomfortable with the way they were being presented. I remember watching their debut MV thinking, "this isn't what a tomboy is, this is just girls in boys clothing, those are two different things." Being a "tomboy" isn't just about the way you dress, it's much more about your personality and your interests and it was always clear to me and many others that the GI members were not really tomboys. I'm honestly surprised there were people who didn't see through that and genuinely thought the girls were being forced to be "more feminin" later on. It must have been so difficult for the girls to have to put up with all that. I hope they are doing well now.
When they debuted, I purchased their all-member signed album. I loved the music & the swag the girls brought. Sad to hear this was forced on them. I was their fan, and do hope they are all doing well, now.
I watched midnight theories' video about global icon. It's safe to say the company wanted to form a boy group, but since they had female trainees, they formed the girl group known for the tomboyish concept.
It's crazy how much things change in just a few years. Nowadays they will be aclaimed for being able to pull out so many different and oppositte concepts as well as nailing male choreos.
Actually, that former member from Fanxy Red that got top surgery and married his girlfriend, Junqian, identifies as a man now! :) just wanted to clarify that, since I fear that this video might give the wrong idea about him uwu My heart goes out to all members of GI who had to endure this… they should’ve had a concept that suited them from the start, because it can be magical when you discover something about yourself by doing what you like, like Junqian did :) Love ya, Evangeline💙
I still remember the day they debuted and I was really impressed because they succeeded to do the boyish concept (even the song they promoted is a bit different than the song in their MV). However little did I know that they were forced to do the concept and some of them literally cried when the staff cut their hair short for the promotion. I feel bad for them. I hope they redebut into a group that supports them.
I saw the member K (Lu Keran) who is now in the girl group The9 under the stage name K. Lu and am so happy that she is doing much better in The9 where she can be more like herself and express herself without being forced! But tbh it’s unfortunate and disheartening to hear that these girls were being forced into being more “masculine”
Fanxyred members ARE NOT forced to be masculine. They said in a lot of interviews that this is the style that they prefer the most. They are not obligated to do something against their will.
I became a kpop fan in 2013 and obviously heard about GI and Alphabat but I didn't know that they were labelmates. And now that I knew about it, it kinda make sense because they have the same vibe in their music/mvs
I actually loved the group when they were like that because it was so unique but i would prefer it if it was their style and not being forced. Like imagine a group full of Ambers who love the “tomboy” style and they were confident with it? Thatd be so cool
This made me think of the group AA that debuted with the song Crazy, felt kinda like the opposite of this where the boys were being overly feminine which was very different at the time. I remember the concept got a mixed reaction, I always wondered what ended up happening, the group was not bad but it felt like they wanted to make a gay group but weren't willing to commit to that, but there was no way to know if they chose the concept or it was manufactured like G.I. these types of concepts really should be fitting to the personalities of the artists and they must commit to it fully or it's destined for failure.
@@Stroonaroon I know but it felt like they were deliberately pushing that aesthetic, one of them got rainbow hair later and it actually seemed like they were toying with gay being the concept of the group but just enough that homophobic people wouldn't attack them. It's kinda sad that it's not a thing with all the hate even though Kpop loves pretend gay fan service.
It's pretty interesting to see AA mentioned, because I pretty much NEVER see anyone talk about them. AA did have a SUPER feminine vibe to them, but I loved them. They made music for years after & then I don't know what happened. Aoora, the one with the rainbow hair, is still active doing things. Not sure about the rest.
@@LH-qn4zm I really liked them too, I personally, found the concept refreshing since they stood out, and appealed to different people. Sad that groups like that didn't work out.
@@mismismism Exactly. A lot of groups, them included, would have gotten so much further if they had made a debut now---even going back to maybe 3 years ago.
I'm sad that they were forced to do this but also I can't stand the commenters, being a tomboy doesn't make you a lesbian and it's not pushing "gay culture" they act like they had never seen a woman with short hair, wearing pants and ect... They still looked femine to me, just a bit tomboyish and that's it.
Though regardless of the concept, idols many have been pushed into doing the same no matter if it's sexy, cute, tomboy or whatever. So this is nothing new, at least they tried something different though. (Well before they made them into the same as every other girl group) it would have been an amazing idea if they had gotten women who wanted to do that concept and the company stuck to it.
This whole situation with Global Icon is really sad, as I feel like a genuine tomboy group in 2013 would have been so empowering for fans. I was a fan of GI from the beginning and the group (along with Amber) not only hooked me into Kpop but also helped me come to terms with my own queerness. I finally had SOMEONE in media that I actually felt I could relate to! While they were still in their original concept, I did see an interview of the girls where ARam and AI said that they were genuine tomboys but the other 3 were not, and it felt super unfair for everyone involved to force the girls into the concept. But I guess even that was not the full truth. Just a shame all around. Don't Lie is still a bop though.
I'm so incredibly happy for Min Junqian that I started crying when I heard she's married 😭 I've heard of both acrush and fanxyred in passing and I am so glad she got the happy ending
I never thought that there's a possibility of a tomboy charm being a key part of a group's "concept". It's so weird and sick to think about how they will utilize things as gender/sexuality and gender expression for lack of better words -- entertainment purposes. I genuinely hope that active members that fall under this category are simply living their authentic selves! And If we look onto another perspective, this can be another opportunity for idols to express their style/behavior freely because being marketed/presented into a box of fragile and sexy (male gaze), which I observed from the previous generations of girl groups, isn't better either. It extends to a more open and inclusive space, so to speak but it's tragic that it leads for some to be forced, caused unhappiness, and identity crisis. I feel sorry for them to go through "deprogramming" it shouldn't be taken to such extremes!
11:53 that is sooo stupid. Korean male idols swear in their songs too, but I don't see their songs getting banned. Just shows how much disrespect Korea still has for women. Compared to the West, we're much more advanced in gender equality. They're so behind💀💀
I’m so glad she’s talking about GI, I grew up with them and I still Stan them to this day, their debut song “Beatles” will always be my favourite song and I always talk about them but my other kpop friends have no clue what I’m talking about, I always forget they’re from a little small underrated company, I also love their company’s boy group “alphabat”
I wonder what would've happened, if Global Icon had the Girly, Sexy and Tomboy aesthetics? Would they still be a popular group now because they have a triple aesthetic, or would they still fade away because people think they're having an identity crisis.
It seems extra cruel that the "video" for Echo shows the transformation. Edited to add: OMG the timeline! I love the timeline in your video and how it tracks what you're talking about! My Type A heart craaaves order
I'm glad I found your channel. Your content are so unique. Unlike other kpop channels that focuses on typical kpop topics, your content is so much more interesting and... weird in a way. I haven't seen videos like yours. Thank you! I always look forward to your videos.
The SECOND I saw Jinsil from BLASTAR in that one clip I remembered how and why I knew GI. I loved BLASTAR so much, I was with them at their debut and I was part of their fandom. I miss them, their company allegedly disbanded them because they asked for more promotion stages for their debut song One Way, tehy only got two. They sang live, Jinsil choreographed the song by herself, and One Way is like my favorite song. I miss them I hope all the members of BLASTAR and of GI the best!
through my pov, GI has had a tough time all through their career. they had to switch their personalities so many times and not all fans were supporting either... masculine side or feminine, their music have always been awesome (from the clips I hear in this video) Obviously as mentioned, the group has disbanded and the members are living a normal life but if I was in the first place as a fan, I'd love each and every concept they ever had because they are (were) working hard and it is almost impossible to get the perfect personality switch becoming an idol is really tough and tbh I think kpop idols have even tough time (not that I'm saying non kpop idols don't suffer) I support GI and they have talent... judging anyone without knowing the whole story can effect anyone
When I tell you that Global Icon was a favorite group of mine...I even bought their album, but when Aram left, who was my fave, left, I KNEW something was off. I never would have known it was crazy like this.
This is a perfect example of how fans need to stop saying idols are uncomfortable on stage (either in an outfit or during a dance) just because they (the fans) are uncomfortable. We NEVER know what’s going on behind the scenes. And FYI, a woman pulling her dress or bottoms down while dancing DOES NOT mean she’s uncomfortable, they do ride up when moving
Even if it was on accident, the half boyish half girliish concept is interesting. I think they could have succeeded better if they debuted now, when gender norms are less rigid and young people like to explore different styles more.
The members having so much fan doing the sexy concept just proves that no matter what concept an artist takes on, the best ones are always those that reflect their true colors... unfortunately, trying to draw attention from the public (by all means necessary) has become the only way for for someone in the k-pop scene to survive and it applies to any concept they're forced to work with.
I loved GI and was very excited for more music from them, but K-Pop just wasn't ready for a more hip-hop / rap focused girl group. It's unfortunate, they had some great songs.
I know you didn’t meant to offend anyone and that you were probably not that serious about this, but JUST IN CASE I’m incorrect about that, she does not own the tomboy concept.
I literally just finished watching your two videos of BLACKSWAN, and now I have to go through this as well. I don't know why I did this to myself. not saying I don't love your videos its just that, I'm just watching it while you're researching and having to make it clear to all of us, so you are probs going through more.
I think this concept was cool and music was great. They really pull off their charisma and sexy aura with boyish concept, even if they unwillingly transform themselve into this image. Company was so cruel to treat them dirty like this. All of them weren't a toy to play them whatever you need. They had dream and passion for this career so they made this even if they don't want it
Honestly I don't like how the fans were saying that stuff,THEY WERE FORCED to be like that,I think the concept switch was a good choice from the company since that was what the girls wanted
3:41 okay that just took me way back! I used to watch them (the mother and daughter there) on TH-cam like a decade ago (Parents React), and I also recognize the guy in the middle at 3:43 Ooh and there's JRE as well. Damn!
They actually looked forced tho? You know when a girl exudes that tomboy energy without having to change their appearance or whatever like for example Moonbyul. Even dressing feminine, she still exudes this cool energy and that is why fangirls are attracted to her
Man..I remember going through my tomboy phase. I still understand my thought process when I was one. I was like 8-12 through that. It started just cus I liked the way my brother dressed and I felt odd in dresses and skirts (I still hate skirts lol). I think what made me realize I wanted out of the tomboy look was cus I couldn’t get a guy to like me. At the time, I thought if I was more chill like them, I would bond more with them. But that wasn’t the case, if anything I was picked on way more by them. Once I finally folded into nicer clothes and even putting on makeup, I was a lot happier. Now don’t get me wrong, I still like masculine clothing but it doesn’t take over my personality anymore. I’m 17 now and I cringe at the way it took over my personality as well. I even refused to smile in photos (cus I thought it was cool, again cus of my brother). I’m still currently getting rid of ugly clothing I had from those years. It definitely was a hard part of my life as I was never satisfied with myself. But now I’m glad I was able to fix my mentality and style as well.
The fans who gave up on them after concept changes are not their fans as they obviously can't see how those girls are forced into it... Imagine being so entitled to expect celebrities to dress and act however you want them to dress and act but still call yourself a fan...
I was about to say this. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that the fans (well maybe not all) were a bunch of entitled brats. How can you call yourself a fan if you only "stan" them coz of their concept and not because of their talent or personalities?
@@nuages8915 if they were genuinely fans of their music that would be ok, because that's the point of being a fan, but it's obvious they were fans of the concept only...which is sad.
@@nuages8915 I understand being fans of the music but if you really watched this video you'll see that most of these so called fans weren't genuine fans at all. No genuine "fan" would force their idols to be something that they are not. If they didn't like how the group turned out then the least they can do is to leave the fandom quietly and not hate the girls just coz their illusions were shattered.
Hi Ploopy, big fan of your work. Always appreciate your really honest commentary and research, this video was no exception. As someone who is nonbinary, I really appreciate the respect you have towards people who are LGBTQ+. However I would like to point out some of the language you used in relation to the Chinese "tomboy" group Fanxy Red. Regarding the former member who had top surgery and married a woman - I think given that they've completed one of the biggest indicators of transitioning, it's probably not too bold to suggest they might be a trans man, or trans masculine. Personally, as someone whose gender identity is fluid and does not fall into either the man/woman category, I think it's important to acknowledge trans folks who do identify with the gender binary, and the gender they live as. Also, with the term "a female" - it might be wise to refer to someone who present feminine as a woman, or as feminine presenting. Since the word "female" brings up all sorts of connotations around womanhood being reduced to one's reproductive organs, and can be exclusionary of people who identify as a woman/trans woman who do fit into society's prescribed gender norms. Thanks once again for all your hard work!
Hi, thanks for your feedback! However, Min Junqian, the member who has had top surgery has clearly stated she still identifies as female despite getting the surgery kprofiles.com/fanxyred-members-profile/#:~:text=Min%20Junqian%20Facts%3A&text=%E2%80%93%20She%20has%20a%20tattoo%20on,finger%20on%20her%20left%20hand.&text=%E2%80%93%20She%20did%20get%20top%20surgery,describes%20herself%20as%20a%20female. People really shouldn't be force to be what they aren't , just for the "public attention". Each and every individual is unique and what companies should do is to help artist show their brightest side on stage , and communicate their true selves to the public. I am relieved that they are living happy lives now (^~^)

I really feel bad for these girls. I was a "tomboy" as a kid (until I realized I was nonbinary lol) and got a lot of pressure to act feminine. It was really rough on me and I can't imagine how I would've felt had I been forced to go along with it for the sake of a career
heyy!!!dont worry you are not alone i was a tomboy kid too and i am non binary now nice to meet you
I hope you're alright! I'm not non-binary and I like "tomboyish" style, but my family tries to "make me act and dress like a normal girl"

Nobody should be forced to look a way they don’t like and are uncomfortable with :(
I feel bad for the members.
The concept changes and gender changes for a concept… My head hurts trying to keep up.
oh god, imagine the amount of gender dysphoria they must have gone through...i remember even amanda bynes saying she went though major situational gender dysphoria and depression while filming/watching herself in "she's the man", and she wasn't even forced to do it, i.e. she could go back to being herself between takes and still had her long hair and mannerisms, etc.
You're a genius. I feel bad for those forced to be a different gender.
I see you everywhere lmao
Jesus Christ man, you're everywhere.

And modeling
Nah she said she can't normally do cute looks or concepts on stage in her "behind the scenes of Lalisa". She is more comfortable with swag concepts
Jo kwon by 2AM is just an icon uwu
I'm glad they get to be their true feminine selfs now. I feel bad they were forced to pretend to be something they weren't. Great video as always.
I think their new concept fits their personalities better.
did u watch the video? she mentioned them...
@@ginahatim3088 Yes, I watched the video. Yes, I know she mentioned them. But I wanted to complement what she had said.
if Global Icon debut in 2021 they would be an insane hit overseas, sadly the concept was too ahead of its time in south korea😭 ofc with willing members, sad the company forced this persona onto them
Crazy Kpop concept idea : When Lee Jung Hyun went from Bakkwo to Summer Dance! She was this powerful edgy techno queen that turned into a early 2000's girly kpop idol. Both times being a trendsetter in both genres (girly concepts like her's was fairly uncommon back then) it would be nice to have the full story as to why that happened!
Props for talking to the other channel! Gotta love channel's working together and not trying to crush each other.
Omg I recognise Lu Keran, she was on a Chinese idol show “youth with you 2” last year
AND SHE MADE IT IN THE9 😍😍😍
I'm really happy to see Fanxyred here, I really like them, since Acrush and I love to see this kind of representation in kpop.

Why did they want a boy group without having male trainees 💀
@@NoName-dx1no maybe they think that boy groups are better than girl groups? 🤷 so they got no choice but to use they're female trainees

:) just wanted to clarify that, since I fear that this video might give the wrong idea about him uwu
My heart goes out to all members of GI who had to endure this… they should’ve had a concept that suited them from the start, because it can be magical when you discover something about yourself by doing what you like, like Junqian did :)
Love ya, Evangeline💙

I really liked the green screen moment, super funny! Also the editing in general was great
Wow, didn’t expect Fanxy Red to be mentioned here 😳
I actually loved the group when they were like that because it was so unique but i would prefer it if it was their style and not being forced. Like imagine a group full of Ambers who love the “tomboy” style and they were confident with it? Thatd be so cool
This made me think of the group AA that debuted with the song Crazy, felt kinda like the opposite of this where the boys were being overly feminine which was very different at the time. I remember the concept got a mixed reaction, I always wondered what ended up happening, the group was not bad but it felt like they wanted to make a gay group but weren't willing to commit to that, but there was no way to know if they chose the concept or it was manufactured like G.I. these types of concepts really should be fitting to the personalities of the artists and they must commit to it fully or it's destined for failure.
well i mean juts because a boy group acts feminine that doesnt mean their gay
Geez imagine a label forcing their artists to falsely portray an image inconsistent with how they wish to be perceived...
I'm so incredibly happy for Min Junqian that I started crying when I heard she's married 😭
I've heard of both acrush and fanxyred in passing and I am so glad she got the happy ending
Jeongyeon was forced to cut her long her just to fit the"boyish concept"😢
But she looks cute in the coconut hair cut. It's iconic.

I wonder what would've happened, if Global Icon had the Girly, Sexy and Tomboy aesthetics? Would they still be a popular group now because they have a triple aesthetic, or would they still fade away because people think they're having an identity crisis.

I miss them I hope all the members of BLASTAR and of GI the best!
through my pov, GI has had a tough time all through their career. they had to switch their personalities so many times and not all fans were supporting either... masculine side or feminine, their music have always been awesome (from the clips I hear in this video)
Obviously as mentioned, the group has disbanded and the members are living a normal life but if I was in the first place as a fan, I'd love each and every concept they ever had because they are (were) working hard and it is almost impossible to get the perfect personality switch

OMMGGG THE MEMORIES!! that debut song was everything for me back then.
Even if it was on accident, the half boyish half girliish concept is interesting. I think they could have succeeded better if they debuted now, when gender norms are less rigid and young people like to explore different styles more.

you're so good at story-telling!!

These are experiences that build our personality and character 💕

I was about to say this. I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that the fans (well maybe not all) were a bunch of entitled brats. How can you call yourself a fan if you only "stan" them coz of their concept and not because of their talent or personalities?

However, Min Junqian, the member who has had top surgery has clearly stated she still identifies as female despite getting the surgery
