Hopefully we get ay lot of main battles where this gen have ay part in finishing the battle.Like boruto sarada or mitsuki fight the main boss why the other characters fight the side enemys and sub bosses.
The previous generation fought long and hard to attain the piece that the new generation live in. So it makes sense why it's more lighthearted and softer. I think we all need a break, no more fighting and war is good, and lack tense means that build will come. I mean look at the 1st scene fro. the first episode. Konoha is completely destroyed and no one's around, although a bit cliche, it's quite the climax.
I'd have to disagree with most of what you said in this video. Personally, I think Boruto is made all the more interesting because of how different he is from Naruto. (This comment became a lot longer than I expected, so I'd like to preface this by saying that I prefer Naruto's underdog persona to Boruto's overdog persona. I just think underdog characters in general are more interesting, but that doesn't prevent overdog's from being good characters in their own right. Also, for the sake of simplicity, I'll strictly be referring to EARLY Naruto - as in, before the Chunin Exams Naruto. K, enough prefacing, onto the important stuff!) When Naruto is first introduced, he's a low-level outcast. He becomes, essentially, the class clown because he's alone. He has no friends, he's annoying, and his fighting techniques are awful - the only real redeeming quality about him is knowing what he had to go through and how that has made him a better person. He's a brat on the surface, but there's more to him than that. In that regard, Boruto is pretty similar. He's just as obnoxious and mischievous as his father was, but his motivations are completely different. He *is* talented - the first 2 episodes have shown him to be the second best in his class at the very least. Yet, no matter how good he is, none of his peers (before the end of the episode) appreciate it. People see him as just the Hokage's son, so of course he would be strong. You would *expect* Boruto to be overpowered for that very reason. If he wasn't, he would just be a Naruto clone at this point (I'm not talking shadow clones here...or maybe I could be. Would that fit the metaphor, as well?). Granted, the two are still INCREDIBLY similar - before the end of this episode, Boruto was an outcast much like Naruto was, albeit for a different reason. Their powers/fighting styles are almost identical at this point, Naruto's journey was about becoming stronger and proving his worth to the rest of the world. He was undeniably an underdog. Everyone looked down on him, and the story revolved around that perception shifting as the story progressed. Boruto is the exact opposite - he's an overdog, and I think it was a brilliant decision to take his character in that direction (I haven't read the manga or seen the movie, so I don't know who to credit for that). Sure, we could've had an entire arc about Boruto proving that he wasn't just riding his father's coattails, but that would've been redundant. We know how strong he is, and now his classmates do too. While Naruto's goal was to prove himself to the world and form connections with people, Boruto's goal is to find his own identity outside of his father's shadow. This isn't just restricted to the confines of his world, either. We, as the audience, have followed this world and its characters for years - for some, it's been over a decade. This entire show is riding the coattails of Naruto & Naruto Shippuden - it's tough to argue against that. Before the spring 2017 anime season began, Boruto was obviously going to stand out from any currently airing anime (for the purpose of this argument, I'm disqualifying sequels as the parallel wouldn't really apply to them). People will get the impression that Boruto is only popular because it's a Naruto spinoff. However, what this show's goal should be is to step *outside* of that shadow to define its own legacy. Yeah, it's a Naruto sequel, but that's no excuse to get comfortable. This show could easily rest on its laurels and fly through as a passable series. So far, though, the show has taken some interesting "risks" like integrating more modern technology into the shinobi world. Boruto is out to do the same thing. He could probably fly through life riding his father's coattails, but that's not his goal. He wants to be his own man - to define his own legacy outside of his father's accomplishments. I'd say that makes Boruto the perfect protagonist for this narrative. (Granted, I think I'm giving the Boruto anime WAY to much credit in that statement, but maybe the staff will prove me wrong, who knows?) You also mentioned how lighthearted the show has become - how there is a lack of any looming danger at the moment. Again, I'd have to defend the current tone shift given both the context of the narrative and the preceding material. First off, the Great Ninja War was a fucking journey. People died, landscapes were destroyed - the whole ordeal was an exhausting experience. As far as simple pacing and narrative stakes go, I think the story *needs* a break from the drama and high tension. Even if the manga included some falling action from the Naruto-Sasuke fight, the Great Ninja War was a LONG ARC! Could just be a personal bias here, but I'm okay with this extra lull in the action (I'm not counting Shippuden anime filler here, btw). In the context of the story, I also think that the lack of a foreboding threat at present is justified. The entire point of Konoha and the rest of the allied shinobi fighting the Great Ninja War was to finally achieve peace. Naruto and his comrades wanted to usher in a new era following the war - to try and prevent such a scenario from taking place ever again. I'm kind of disappointed that the flash-forward in episode 1 does away with this break, but I can understand throwing that in to give the audience some promise to invest in for the future. Disregarding that moment, however, it wouldn't make sense to have a war or any sort of significant in-fighting already slipping through the cracks. That would just make the cast we're already familiar with look incompetent at their jobs. Personally, I'd rather see those characters have some sort of success to preserve at least a semblance of the closure we got at the end of the proper Naruto story. I'm not saying that they *shouldn't* fail at their jobs. There wouldn't be a story for Boruto if everything lived happily ever after from here on out. However, I think that jumping from that massive war to even a small-scale intense battle so quickly with the simple excuse of "but there was a time skip, bruh," would feel rushed. MY GOD! I'VE WRITTEN A NOVEL HERE! Kudos to anyone who read that whole thing. Hopefully that made some sense.

I do like we're getting more and more from the children of the original series. I really am liking ChoCho. Also Im curious about seeing the rest of the class. Im surprised Swagkage didn't mention the classrep girl who has vibes of Hinata. There's a couple of no note dudes and there was like a 'goth girl'? In a coat with a doll that is seen twice. I wonder if we'll get more with these kids.
kyrudo yeah she kept popping up along with others I hope she is important I would like for this series to be based on most of Boruto's class as its not too big and the first Naruto series got us real familiar with the side characters (although Shippuden trampled all that) almost like MHA and HxH gets the audience familiar with the side characters
I actually do like this smaller cast with only the Ino-Shika-Cho kids, and the new 3 sannin. I think we should focus well on these kids. We dont need a huge cast. Even Oda has a tough time balancing the straw hat crew and they're 9 characters.
Rock Lee was so popular he got a Jr. to be his proxy as part of the cool kids along with the Ino-Shika-Chou and the future-newest 3-way deadlock. Kiba and Shino weren't as fortunate but Shino is a fuckin' boss so he finally gets love and bigger part as their academy sensei.
I think this anime has a ton of potential to help expand the manga. I think they took a great point in time to be in. They could easily have a couple years in the academy to help build relationships and expand characters. My only worry is that at the end of the day, these characters have to 'reset' by the time they catch up to the movie. I know it's technically called Boruto, but they should really focus on other people. Maybe Himawari? Maybe Asuma's daugther? There's a ton of stuff to expand on so when we do reset its not as jarring.
yea but in naruto part 1 we get to see naruto basically telling everyone to shove it because he has great potential as we see him use multi shadow clones justu to protect his sensei. Boruto is a bit boring

+Kenneth Njapa you keep saying this but you obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Sasuke didn't even know who Rock Lee was when he fought Kakashi in the bell test. He only met Rock Lee during the Chunin Exams, which was a whole one or two arcs later. You need to brush up on your Naruto history.
I'm pretty lax when it comes to animation. I thought they didn't drop the ball and the fight looked fluid at parts, but Japanese animators have hellish work conditions. I try keeping that in mind when I critique the animation and art.
It's best not to have academy student fights look super impressive. It makes the high quality ones they have later stand out all the more as you are able to go back and contrast.

Of course the world is gonna be softer, more forgiving and giving more opportunities to the weaker ones. If not then it would mean that Naruto fucked up. If Boruto's world was still like the old days then it would straight up shit all over Naruto and Naruto Shippuden and all of Naruto's dreams. They can't make it gritty reality from the beginning. I personally think that it is better this way. It shows that Naruto *made* a difference in the world and that the ninja world is getting better. If they went straight away and put Boruto in a new war age it would just mean that Naruto failed and that would be disappointing a lot. It would be what? 720 episodes and around 10 movies and Naruto still did diddly dick? That would be bad.
He is not supposed to be the next leader. He has Hyuga blood but him, much like his mother and sister are NOT in the hyuga clan, they are Uzumaki's. In the naruto world when 2 people from different clans get together, the weaker one takes on the last name of the stronger one and thus joins their clan. Hawabi is the clan head and whoever her children may be will become the new clan heads of the Hyuga clan.
During the Mutsuki one-shot it was implied that Boruto was already popular in the shinobi world, so we'll probably have to wait a few episodes, maybe the first or next arc to finish until we see Mutsuki.
I really dislike how they made boruto fight with only shadow clones. We watched naruto do that for 100+ episodes. I want something diffirent and unique.
Boruto has only just joined the Academy and he's also probably just not motivated to be learning more techniques. After deciding that he will be Sarada's bodyguard when she becomes Hokage, this will motivate to become as strong as possible.

I was was not a big Boruto fan when the show first started as i had already seen Naruto and Naruto Shippuden and this felt way lighter and less gritty but recently the show has had more of that vibe. Looking back at it now this show has really good character progression and i think that is what this show is really good at. For example (Spoilers ahead) At the beginning of the show its quite clear that Sarada is kinda friends with Boruto but also is really annoyed by him and dislikes certain aspects of him as well. Sarada didn't even want to be on the same team as Boruto at first because she thought he was to careless. (which he was) . Then after ep 65 Boruto gets character development because he realizes his father is the GOAT and he finds his ninja way yadda yadda you get the gist he's basically less annoying after that ep ... kinda. But now fast forward to the most recent arc (The Ao Arc/vessel) it is very prominent that Sarada cares for Boruto on a hole other level and no I'm not talking about that Boru-Sara shit lol, just as comrades, Mitsuki too he's one of the most interesting characters in the show probably my fav character who makes his own smart decisions now instead of just going with what Boruto says. I gotta say I'm really starting to like this next generation more and more.
If people still think Boruto is a brat after this episode, I don't know what to say. To me tho, he's base God. Great things are gonna come from this series. Great things.
i think rn they are just introducing all of the changes in this era from the previous while introducing the new characters. About the tone, right now there doesnt seem to be any threat to society or the need for powerful ninja but i think there will be a tone shift later on in the series that establishes an over arching conflict and hopefully antagonists that breaks the mold (misunderstood guy who then makes friend with Naruto/Boruto ie Gaara, Pain) of previous naruto villains. From the fight i see potential of this being a return to the roots of what naruto was back when the strongest jutsu you seen was the fireball jutsu and hopefully itll be more character driven and not about flashy new jutsu and weird looking eyes that get a new ability every arc...*cough cough* sharingan *cough*
what didnt make sense to me is that that day naruto became hokage himiwari unlocked her byakugan but why dosnt it show her having white eyes like every other hyuga

If they were gonna do that they might as well just had a freakaziod shadow clone of Naruto instead. I don't mind Boruto being good, its new, its fresh. And besides, we all know that if you did get your wish for that, you would just be complaining about how Boruto is basically Naruto again.
Nostalgia always plays too much of a role in people's opinions. They could add a little tension into the series but it isn't needed. Tension...what for?? There won't be another Zabuza, another Madara, another Orochimaru, another Akatsuku, or probably even another Great Ninja War! I took a step back after saying Boruto really sucks but in reality the reason we hate it is because it lacks action, even though the writing makes 100% sense. In Boruto, the ninja world is obviously chill and everyone is at peace. There should be no reason for Boruto to be a loner, for people to die, for the ninja academy to be difficult. The ninja world SHOULD be softened up for the convenience of living an easy life. This is what the previous generation fought for! When you look at it from a normal standpoint, Boruto should just be a normal story of a kid with a popular father. And I'll say it again, the previous generation fought for peace, for their kids to have an easy life, have no worries, never have to go to war, so of course the Ninja academy will soften up and turn into a regular school, of course Boruto is going to be spoiled, he never had to go through thr suffering or hard work like Naruto had to. l don't know how the writers will build us up the to the first 40 seconds of episode 1. Boruto probably won't have the same action as Naruto did, it's just way too different from Naruto, even if it is a sequel to it. I think this series is being treated like Dragon Ball Super because people seem to think that DBZ and Naruto are the perfect series and since neither series will ever be like its predecessors then they show hate upon it because they watched DBZ and Naruto first as kids and nostalgia plays too much of a role.

Hey Swagkage! I personally find it refreshing and honestly a bit more realistic that Boruto would be a much more competent of a fighter than Naruto was. I think allot of people want this to basically be Naruto 2. But Kishi did say that this will not be like Naruto, I welcomed that. So far he has been keeping his promise and I am enjoying the ride.
I have a great liking for Inojin, he's a great character. I hated his design at first but I'm starting to like it. He's well written and I like that his beast scrolls are red instead of black. Can't wait to see how he uses the Yamanaka (forgotten how to spell it) clan jutsus along with beast scrolls
I love all the cool shit in the War Arc and beyond. Madara slicing mountain ranges, Ten Tails bombing shit till kingdom come etc. But it was cool to go back to the basics. Substitution, Kunai and a couple of shadow clones! Not the best but a very cool opening fight for just the 2nd episode
i think the reason the line *he is riding on his father's coattails* is repeated so much is because that is what would happen at school, if someone is not liked for some reason people will say that everything good that happens to him is thanks to someone else.
Naruto from Part 1is a better character and arguably stronger than Boruto. And besides the only reason why Boruto has high grades is because his parents are still there. If Minato and Kushina were there for Naruto then Naruto would've gotten higher grades than Sasuke.
Etherious naruto part 1 is not even arguably stronger. Compare them from episode, this is his first day in the academy. Naruto couldnt even do a clone jutsu till after the academy.
We don't know how old Boruto is but he's definitely older than academy Naruto was or even Academy Kakashi and Guy. New rules about not letting people into the Academy until adolescence maybe? In the third shinobi war children were sent out into the battlefield when the numbers ran low and in the age before ninja villages kids died on the regular fighting side by side with adults, it was normal for kids to fight and die then. It's what sent Hashirama and Madara down their paths to begin with. Every generation seemingly doing more to protect the youth.

I like how you put the difference from Boruto to part one into perspective, with how it's almost like there's this looming sense of danger around every corner. Naruto's big name and heroics haven't gotten around (or even happened yet), there were a lot of criminals and assassins, pretty much all of the other villages hated each other for one reason or another, there was deceit everywhere, people were trying to kill each other all the time, granted not to the point of complete and total barbaric savagery, but there was just all this danger, violence, and tension established in the world. In Boruto, it starts off in the peace time where the nations and villages are all friendly. Crime is pretty low, random acts of violence or killings are hardly seen aside from the few plot driven things, etc. I may have made that sound a little too dramatic, but like Swagkage said, just the idea that the old ninja world was very harsh and unforgiving. People died on missions. Genin and chunin died on missions. There's so much safety and friendliness in Baruto's new ninja world compared to part one. In part one, the only way you'd last out in the wilds so to speak is if you were either part of a really powerful organization, a main village, or were just extremely powerful yourself. Granted not necessarily to the extent of a guy with a dagger behind every tree you pass waiting to jump out and pick you off, but still. In Boruto, literally anyone can pretty much just go wherever or do whatever the hell they want. Even Orochimaru, one of the series' most villainous characters seems to keep to himself and leave people alone for the most part. He even welcomes Naruto and Sasuke as visitors into his many hideouts apparently.

Boruto's talk no jutsu moment felt too much like Naruto. I know Kishimoto wanted to make sure the new generation isn't a carbon copy, but Boruto is using TNJ and spamming shadow clones. I liked the episode, but damn. Boruto is supposed to be a prodigy, show us something besides the shadow clones.
*@Swagkage* Boruto only got second place in the obstacle course. When it comes to overall stats he is listed in the Boruto character guide to be #4 in his class behind Sarada, Mitsuki, and Shikadai. Boruto has exceptional combat and agility skills but falls behind areas such as "negotiation". Overall Sarada dominates the class statically by a substantial margin. She has absurdly high scores in everything.
Would you guys recommend finishing the Naruto anime before watching Boruto? I still need a good amount of episodes to watch before I finish but I already know most of the plot of Shippuden
The fight sequence between Boruto and Iwabe was lit asf, we're going back to the old roots of Naruto, before the Nukes, the Planet Busters, the meteor throwing and etc. I really liked this episode, obviously, it isn't the best but this only episode 2 and this during the academy, I mean it isn't like there gonna be so much action as there was in the first couple of episodes of Naruto. Plus different era, it is peaceful now and not during the warring era of Naruto's generation. Again, very good episode, can't wait for more.
I don't remember the exact name, but whatever Inojin called Denki sounded really close to Kawaki. Maybe Denki has an older brother who turns out to be Kawaki and he controls those snake things.
In terms of what you said about your dislike to the way the Narutoverse's state that it is currently in; what else could you expect? There's finally peace after the Fourth Shinobi War's end. The world doesn't have the same need for trained shinobi as it did back in Part 1 and Shippuden because of this peace and because of that I think it will be much more satisfying to see these threats that are inevitably lurking about rise up and really hit the new generation's world state HARD.
Great review man! I also think that the academy is more like a regular school rather than a ninja school. No wonder iwabe was so mad about the new ninja ways. And Boruto needs to be nerfed a bit, at least after movie part.
Despite the fact it's flawed, the fight was really exciting, and nostalgic because it was so similar to part 1. Boruto only using Shurikens, Kage Bunshin and Taijutsu is so similar to P1 Naruto. I hope Boruto stays like this for the most series, and leave the World Busting fights to be special. I know that the world seems so cheesy, but let's wait to see Kawakii to show up and fuck up with everything.
I personally loved this episode, and I do agree with how kunai's are dangerous again, and love it. I hope they still do some damage in the future, maybe just some small cuts if they become god-like characters again like Sasuke and Naruto became. I also loved the fight scene, nice and more laid-back than the heart-pounding and mind-fucking tactics used in the normal Naruto. I don't particularly have a problem with the 'coattail' sayings as with a normal school environment, the same would be happening. Not a perfect school, but I have a theory they're making him super powerful like you said, but a lot of the storyline will be him mentally maturing to be responsible with his actions, and maybe him goofing off at some point being so well-talented in everything caused someone to get hurt, etc etc. However I hope when he does become all-powerful, he'll be overconfident and have some type of downfall and such because I thought it was so ridiculous having the god-powers in Naruto, it just kind of became too far-fetched for my taste. Although, I do not read the manga and such, because I'd like to see how the anime goes. Besides, I'd like to see the normal days and all as Boruto deals with bullying, being criticized and so on. More relatable in my opinion. Thanks for the video!
Swagkage first of all just want to say I love your videos, and second, I think what you want from boruto is for it to be more similar to the original naruto series, however if this was the case boruto would dry up so fast. The show is literally called boruto NEXT GENERATION. I personally like the change of atmosphere, I have no doubt that later on down the line we will see a transition to a naruto feel, but the writers are doing a phenomenal job thus far. All being said don't hang from your fathers coattails.
I love the fact that they have a cost to peace time with the world getting "softer". Honestly Baruto is probably closer to Asuma in story with his father being hokage etc and the challenges of being watched as an example. Though you would think that the kids would know each other better then the first day of school or so. My only gripe was how technique heavy the fight was in terms of actual ninjutsu, though I guess it could have been worse if Hinata was rocking the gentle fist to baby boy. (I wonder if that is going to be part of the arc, someone he can't beat and here comes Hinata with lion fists...)?
I do agree, I don't really like the world in Boruto that much as I did in part one of Naruto, But I also kind off like it a bit, because it's a bit fresh from what were used too, but I guess the only way to be sure is to continue watching it
Kinda annoying how every new character that get introduced, some people always assume it must be Kawaki smh.. first Denki, now Iwabe and next week the it a new character if they introduce one. People will continue until the actual character gets reveal.

What if the regular classes they take that include science in addition to the ninja classes teaches them some new stuff. For example in the first episode of boruto, the very opening scene where kawaki and boruto are fighting, they show kawaki with this tattoo that lights up and gives him power. What if this leads up to a new ninjutsu. My thoughts on the episodes.
Personally, I think the whole easy thing going in Bortuo is another theme of modernism vs the old days where it seems that the past had a lot more gritty work and physical stuff compared to now where school determines whether or not you get somewhere in life. Additionally, I hope the whole "boruto being really good at everything" bites him back later. Maybe it's just to set up for when he starts struggling? Idk.

I don't mind the students being actual students learning things other than ninja skills simply because this is almost a way of carrying on Shisui and Itachi's will. Itachi and Shisui hated war and hated how kids were basically bred for war. Now they're an advanced society so it's no need for that.
Is no-one gonna point out the fact that Iwabe acts like Kawaki, not liking the era and how the shinobi are and wanting it to change. He also covers his hair so we don't know what colour his hair is so it could be the same as Kawaki, in addition he seems to have this kind of rivalry with Boruto just like Kawaki. Also, his wepon is sort of like a staff like the one we see Kawaki with. I might be wrong in thinking this but all signs point to Iwabe being Kawaki and then I'll probably be wrong lol.
Can you please explain how Hashirama can control multiple tailed beasts at once? I get wood style can suppress their chakra but does he put them in a genjutsu similar to the sharingan to actually control them fully?
i don't understand the fact that Iwabe mentioned that the 4th Great Shinobi War was 10 years prior to this story.. Making Naruto about 27, in which Boruto is about 8. Sooooo. wtf. Naruto and Hinata would have had to have had Boruto at 19, and since The Last happened when they where 20, it just doesnt add up...

The previous generation fought long and hard to attain the piece that the new generation live in. So it makes sense why it's more lighthearted and softer. I think we all need a break, no more fighting and war is good, and lack tense means that build will come. I mean look at the 1st scene fro. the first episode. Konoha is completely destroyed and no one's around, although a bit cliche, it's quite the climax.

I'd have to disagree with most of what you said in this video. Personally, I think Boruto is made all the more interesting because of how different he is from Naruto. (This comment became a lot longer than I expected, so I'd like to preface this by saying that I prefer Naruto's underdog persona to Boruto's overdog persona. I just think underdog characters in general are more interesting, but that doesn't prevent overdog's from being good characters in their own right. Also, for the sake of simplicity, I'll strictly be referring to EARLY Naruto - as in, before the Chunin Exams Naruto. K, enough prefacing, onto the important stuff!)
When Naruto is first introduced, he's a low-level outcast. He becomes, essentially, the class clown because he's alone. He has no friends, he's annoying, and his fighting techniques are awful - the only real redeeming quality about him is knowing what he had to go through and how that has made him a better person. He's a brat on the surface, but there's more to him than that.
In that regard, Boruto is pretty similar. He's just as obnoxious and mischievous as his father was, but his motivations are completely different. He *is* talented - the first 2 episodes have shown him to be the second best in his class at the very least. Yet, no matter how good he is, none of his peers (before the end of the episode) appreciate it. People see him as just the Hokage's son, so of course he would be strong. You would *expect* Boruto to be overpowered for that very reason. If he wasn't, he would just be a Naruto clone at this point (I'm not talking shadow clones here...or maybe I could be. Would that fit the metaphor, as well?). Granted, the two are still INCREDIBLY similar - before the end of this episode, Boruto was an outcast much like Naruto was, albeit for a different reason. Their powers/fighting styles are almost identical at this point,
Naruto's journey was about becoming stronger and proving his worth to the rest of the world. He was undeniably an underdog. Everyone looked down on him, and the story revolved around that perception shifting as the story progressed. Boruto is the exact opposite - he's an overdog, and I think it was a brilliant decision to take his character in that direction (I haven't read the manga or seen the movie, so I don't know who to credit for that). Sure, we could've had an entire arc about Boruto proving that he wasn't just riding his father's coattails, but that would've been redundant. We know how strong he is, and now his classmates do too. While Naruto's goal was to prove himself to the world and form connections with people, Boruto's goal is to find his own identity outside of his father's shadow.
This isn't just restricted to the confines of his world, either. We, as the audience, have followed this world and its characters for years - for some, it's been over a decade. This entire show is riding the coattails of Naruto & Naruto Shippuden - it's tough to argue against that. Before the spring 2017 anime season began, Boruto was obviously going to stand out from any currently airing anime (for the purpose of this argument, I'm disqualifying sequels as the parallel wouldn't really apply to them). People will get the impression that Boruto is only popular because it's a Naruto spinoff. However, what this show's goal should be is to step *outside* of that shadow to define its own legacy. Yeah, it's a Naruto sequel, but that's no excuse to get comfortable. This show could easily rest on its laurels and fly through as a passable series. So far, though, the show has taken some interesting "risks" like integrating more modern technology into the shinobi world. Boruto is out to do the same thing. He could probably fly through life riding his father's coattails, but that's not his goal. He wants to be his own man - to define his own legacy outside of his father's accomplishments. I'd say that makes Boruto the perfect protagonist for this narrative. (Granted, I think I'm giving the Boruto anime WAY to much credit in that statement, but maybe the staff will prove me wrong, who knows?)
You also mentioned how lighthearted the show has become - how there is a lack of any looming danger at the moment. Again, I'd have to defend the current tone shift given both the context of the narrative and the preceding material.
First off, the Great Ninja War was a fucking journey. People died, landscapes were destroyed - the whole ordeal was an exhausting experience. As far as simple pacing and narrative stakes go, I think the story *needs* a break from the drama and high tension. Even if the manga included some falling action from the Naruto-Sasuke fight, the Great Ninja War was a LONG ARC! Could just be a personal bias here, but I'm okay with this extra lull in the action (I'm not counting Shippuden anime filler here, btw).
In the context of the story, I also think that the lack of a foreboding threat at present is justified. The entire point of Konoha and the rest of the allied shinobi fighting the Great Ninja War was to finally achieve peace. Naruto and his comrades wanted to usher in a new era following the war - to try and prevent such a scenario from taking place ever again. I'm kind of disappointed that the flash-forward in episode 1 does away with this break, but I can understand throwing that in to give the audience some promise to invest in for the future. Disregarding that moment, however, it wouldn't make sense to have a war or any sort of significant in-fighting already slipping through the cracks. That would just make the cast we're already familiar with look incompetent at their jobs. Personally, I'd rather see those characters have some sort of success to preserve at least a semblance of the closure we got at the end of the proper Naruto story. I'm not saying that they *shouldn't* fail at their jobs. There wouldn't be a story for Boruto if everything lived happily ever after from here on out. However, I think that jumping from that massive war to even a small-scale intense battle so quickly with the simple excuse of "but there was a time skip, bruh," would feel rushed.

I actually do like this smaller cast with only the Ino-Shika-Cho kids, and the new 3 sannin. I think we should focus well on these kids. We dont need a huge cast. Even Oda has a tough time balancing the straw hat crew and they're 9 characters.
Rock Lee was so popular he got a Jr. to be his proxy as part of the cool kids along with the Ino-Shika-Chou and the future-newest 3-way deadlock. Kiba and Shino weren't as fortunate but Shino is a fuckin' boss so he finally gets love and bigger part as their academy sensei.
I think this anime has a ton of potential to help expand the manga. I think they took a great point in time to be in. They could easily have a couple years in the academy to help build relationships and expand characters. My only worry is that at the end of the day, these characters have to 'reset' by the time they catch up to the movie. I know it's technically called Boruto, but they should really focus on other people. Maybe Himawari? Maybe Asuma's daugther? There's a ton of stuff to expand on so when we do reset its not as jarring.

I'm pretty lax when it comes to animation. I thought they didn't drop the ball and the fight looked fluid at parts, but Japanese animators have hellish work conditions. I try keeping that in mind when I critique the animation and art.
It's best not to have academy student fights look super impressive. It makes the high quality ones they have later stand out all the more as you are able to go back and contrast.

He is not supposed to be the next leader. He has Hyuga blood but him, much like his mother and sister are NOT in the hyuga clan, they are Uzumaki's. In the naruto world when 2 people from different clans get together, the weaker one takes on the last name of the stronger one and thus joins their clan. Hawabi is the clan head and whoever her children may be will become the new clan heads of the Hyuga clan.

I was was not a big Boruto fan when the show first started as i had already seen Naruto and Naruto Shippuden and this felt way lighter and less gritty but recently the show has had more of that vibe. Looking back at it now this show has really good character progression and i think that is what this show is really good at. For example (Spoilers ahead)
At the beginning of the show its quite clear that Sarada is kinda friends with Boruto but also is really annoyed by him and dislikes certain aspects of him as well. Sarada didn't even want to be on the same team as Boruto at first because she thought he was to careless. (which he was) . Then after ep 65 Boruto gets character development because he realizes his father is the GOAT and he finds his ninja way yadda yadda you get the gist he's basically less annoying after that ep ... kinda. But now fast forward to the most recent arc (The Ao Arc/vessel) it is very prominent that Sarada cares for Boruto on a hole other level and no I'm not talking about that Boru-Sara shit lol, just as comrades, Mitsuki too he's one of the most interesting characters in the show probably my fav character who makes his own smart decisions now instead of just going with what Boruto says. I gotta say I'm really starting to like this next generation more and more.

i think rn they are just introducing all of the changes in this era from the previous while introducing the new characters. About the tone, right now there doesnt seem to be any threat to society or the need for powerful ninja but i think there will be a tone shift later on in the series that establishes an over arching conflict and hopefully antagonists that breaks the mold (misunderstood guy who then makes friend with Naruto/Boruto ie Gaara, Pain) of previous naruto villains. From the fight i see potential of this being a return to the roots of what naruto was back when the strongest jutsu you seen was the fireball jutsu and hopefully itll be more character driven and not about flashy new jutsu and weird looking eyes that get a new ability every arc...*cough cough* sharingan *cough*

Nostalgia always plays too much of a role in people's opinions. They could add a little tension into the series but it isn't needed. Tension...what for?? There won't be another Zabuza, another Madara, another Orochimaru, another Akatsuku, or probably even another Great Ninja War! I took a step back after saying Boruto really sucks but in reality the reason we hate it is because it lacks action, even though the writing makes 100% sense. In Boruto, the ninja world is obviously chill and everyone is at peace. There should be no reason for Boruto to be a loner, for people to die, for the ninja academy to be difficult. The ninja world SHOULD be softened up for the convenience of living an easy life. This is what the previous generation fought for! When you look at it from a normal standpoint, Boruto should just be a normal story of a kid with a popular father. And I'll say it again, the previous generation fought for peace, for their kids to have an easy life, have no worries, never have to go to war, so of course the Ninja academy will soften up and turn into a regular school, of course Boruto is going to be spoiled, he never had to go through thr suffering or hard work like Naruto had to. l don't know how the writers will build us up the to the first 40 seconds of episode 1.
Boruto probably won't have the same action as Naruto did, it's just way too different from Naruto, even if it is a sequel to it.
I think this series is being treated like Dragon Ball Super because people seem to think that DBZ and Naruto are the perfect series and since neither series will ever be like its predecessors then they show hate upon it because they watched DBZ and Naruto first as kids and nostalgia plays too much of a role.

Hey Swagkage! I personally find it refreshing and honestly a bit more realistic that Boruto would be a much more competent of a fighter than Naruto was. I think allot of people want this to basically be Naruto 2. But Kishi did say that this will not be like Naruto, I welcomed that. So far he has been keeping his promise and I am enjoying the ride.

i think the reason the line *he is riding on his father's coattails* is repeated so much is because that is what would happen at school, if someone is not liked for some reason people will say that everything good that happens to him is thanks to someone else.
Naruto from Part 1is a better character and arguably stronger than Boruto. And besides the only reason why Boruto has high grades is because his parents are still there. If Minato and Kushina were there for Naruto then Naruto would've gotten higher grades than Sasuke.

Etherious naruto part 1 is not even arguably stronger. Compare them from episode, this is his first day in the academy. Naruto couldnt even do a clone jutsu till after the academy.
It's worth noting that Naruto had the kyuubi which is why he was so strong.
We don't know how old Boruto is but he's definitely older than academy Naruto was or even Academy Kakashi and Guy. New rules about not letting people into the Academy until adolescence maybe?
In the third shinobi war children were sent out into the battlefield when the numbers ran low and in the age before ninja villages kids died on the regular fighting side by side with adults, it was normal for kids to fight and die then. It's what sent Hashirama and Madara down their paths to begin with.

I like how you put the difference from Boruto to part one into perspective, with how it's almost like there's this looming sense of danger around every corner. Naruto's big name and heroics haven't gotten around (or even happened yet), there were a lot of criminals and assassins, pretty much all of the other villages hated each other for one reason or another, there was deceit everywhere, people were trying to kill each other all the time, granted not to the point of complete and total barbaric savagery, but there was just all this danger, violence, and tension established in the world. In Boruto, it starts off in the peace time where the nations and villages are all friendly. Crime is pretty low, random acts of violence or killings are hardly seen aside from the few plot driven things, etc.
I may have made that sound a little too dramatic, but like Swagkage said, just the idea that the old ninja world was very harsh and unforgiving. People died on missions. Genin and chunin died on missions.
There's so much safety and friendliness in Baruto's new ninja world compared to part one. In part one, the only way you'd last out in the wilds so to speak is if you were either part of a really powerful organization, a main village, or were just extremely powerful yourself. Granted not necessarily to the extent of a guy with a dagger behind every tree you pass waiting to jump out and pick you off, but still.
In Boruto, literally anyone can pretty much just go wherever or do whatever the hell they want. Even Orochimaru, one of the series' most villainous characters seems to keep to himself and leave people alone for the most part. He even welcomes Naruto and Sasuke as visitors into his many hideouts apparently.

Also, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed Iwabe is basically the Naruto fandom in this episode.

Boruto's talk no jutsu moment felt too much like Naruto. I know Kishimoto wanted to make sure the new generation isn't a carbon copy, but Boruto is using TNJ and spamming shadow clones. I liked the episode, but damn. Boruto is supposed to be a prodigy, show us something besides the shadow clones.
I like how the background characters designs are very unique unlike them in the original series
*@Swagkage* Boruto only got second place in the obstacle course. When it comes to overall stats he is listed in the Boruto character guide to be #4 in his class behind Sarada, Mitsuki, and Shikadai. Boruto has exceptional combat and agility skills but falls behind areas such as "negotiation". Overall Sarada dominates the class statically by a substantial margin. She has absurdly high scores in everything.
Would you guys recommend finishing the Naruto anime before watching Boruto? I still need a good amount of episodes to watch before I finish but I already know most of the plot of Shippuden
The fight sequence between Boruto and Iwabe was lit asf, we're going back to the old roots of Naruto, before the Nukes, the Planet Busters, the meteor throwing and etc. I really liked this episode, obviously, it isn't the best but this only episode 2 and this during the academy, I mean it isn't like there gonna be so much action as there was in the first couple of episodes of Naruto. Plus different era, it is peaceful now and not during the warring era of Naruto's generation. Again, very good episode, can't wait for more.
I don't remember the exact name, but whatever Inojin called Denki sounded really close to Kawaki. Maybe Denki has an older brother who turns out to be Kawaki and he controls those snake things.
In terms of what you said about your dislike to the way the Narutoverse's state that it is currently in; what else could you expect? There's finally peace after the Fourth Shinobi War's end. The world doesn't have the same need for trained shinobi as it did back in Part 1 and Shippuden because of this peace and because of that I think it will be much more satisfying to see these threats that are inevitably lurking about rise up and really hit the new generation's world state HARD.
Great review man! I also think that the academy is more like a regular school rather than a ninja school. No wonder iwabe was so mad about the new ninja ways. And Boruto needs to be nerfed a bit, at least after movie part.
Despite the fact it's flawed, the fight was really exciting, and nostalgic because it was so similar to part 1. Boruto only using Shurikens, Kage Bunshin and Taijutsu is so similar to P1 Naruto. I hope Boruto stays like this for the most series, and leave the World Busting fights to be special. I know that the world seems so cheesy, but let's wait to see Kawakii to show up and fuck up with everything.
I personally loved this episode, and I do agree with how kunai's are dangerous again, and love it. I hope they still do some damage in the future, maybe just some small cuts if they become god-like characters again like Sasuke and Naruto became. I also loved the fight scene, nice and more laid-back than the heart-pounding and mind-fucking tactics used in the normal Naruto. I don't particularly have a problem with the 'coattail' sayings as with a normal school environment, the same would be happening. Not a perfect school, but I have a theory they're making him super powerful like you said, but a lot of the storyline will be him mentally maturing to be responsible with his actions, and maybe him goofing off at some point being so well-talented in everything caused someone to get hurt, etc etc. However I hope when he does become all-powerful, he'll be overconfident and have some type of downfall and such because I thought it was so ridiculous having the god-powers in Naruto, it just kind of became too far-fetched for my taste. Although, I do not read the manga and such, because I'd like to see how the anime goes. Besides, I'd like to see the normal days and all as Boruto deals with bullying, being criticized and so on. More relatable in my opinion. Thanks for the video!
Swagkage first of all just want to say I love your videos, and second, I think what you want from boruto is for it to be more similar to the original naruto series, however if this was the case boruto would dry up so fast. The show is literally called boruto NEXT GENERATION. I personally like the change of atmosphere, I have no doubt that later on down the line we will see a transition to a naruto feel, but the writers are doing a phenomenal job thus far. All being said don't hang from your fathers coattails.

I love the fact that they have a cost to peace time with the world getting "softer". Honestly Baruto is probably closer to Asuma in story with his father being hokage etc and the challenges of being watched as an example. Though you would think that the kids would know each other better then the first day of school or so. My only gripe was how technique heavy the fight was in terms of actual ninjutsu, though I guess it could have been worse if Hinata was rocking the gentle fist to baby boy. (I wonder if that is going to be part of the arc, someone he can't beat and here comes Hinata with lion fists...)?
I do agree, I don't really like the world in Boruto that much as I did in part one of Naruto, But I also kind off like it a bit, because it's a bit fresh from what were used too, but I guess the only way to be sure is to continue watching it

What if the regular classes they take that include science in addition to the ninja classes teaches them some new stuff. For example in the first episode of boruto, the very opening scene where kawaki and boruto are fighting, they show kawaki with this tattoo that lights up and gives him power. What if this leads up to a new ninjutsu. My thoughts on the episodes.

Personally, I think the whole easy thing going in Bortuo is another theme of modernism vs the old days where it seems that the past had a lot more gritty work and physical stuff compared to now where school determines whether or not you get somewhere in life. Additionally, I hope the whole "boruto being really good at everything" bites him back later. Maybe it's just to set up for when he starts struggling? Idk.

I don't mind the students being actual students learning things other than ninja skills simply because this is almost a way of carrying on Shisui and Itachi's will. Itachi and Shisui hated war and hated how kids were basically bred for war. Now they're an advanced society so it's no need for that.
Is no-one gonna point out the fact that Iwabe acts like Kawaki, not liking the era and how the shinobi are and wanting it to change. He also covers his hair so we don't know what colour his hair is so it could be the same as Kawaki, in addition he seems to have this kind of rivalry with Boruto just like Kawaki. Also, his wepon is sort of like a staff like the one we see Kawaki with. I might be wrong in thinking this but all signs point to Iwabe being Kawaki and then I'll probably be wrong lol.
