This is probably the happiest I've been with a video in a while and I'm glad a lot are feeling the same. Let's keep it going, make sure to subscribe to be apart of the first 10,000 :) Got some great ideas for December
I would also argue that the arcade archives version of vs smb is an enhanced port of the original, and not just a virtual console-esque rerelease/port, since the arcade archives version features two new modes
Every time I see SMB35, I get a feeling of melancholy cuz I can't play it anymore and seething rage cuz the whole idea for an SMB battle royale game was stolen from InfernoPlus after they DMCA'd him, gave him zero credit in the game for the initial idea, and made the game into a limited release and will never allow anyone to play a similar game again. And also, I refuse to delete it on my switch like if it were PT. InfernoPlus's SMB Royale: th-cam.com/video/cgmNQ5zPuSQ/w-d-xo.html For as long as I'm alive on this earth, they will never live that down.
I think a GDQ event should do this like a relay. Get a team of some of the best runners and have them do each game in sequence where one can't start until the moment the one before it ends.
i think that super paper mario fits into your criteria -properly released and licensed -includes mario as a playable character -has structured gameplay and story -primarily a platformer (it has rpg elements like leveling up but it is first and foremost a platformer) do i think it’s a mainline game? no, but it fits into the extreme category and i wouldn’t put many of the extreme picks on this list into my list of mainline games
Sean Raider will be the next runner to do it. He's been learning every game for the last 6+ months and now he's only 3 games away from being ready to do the full marathon, 18 mainline games + bowser's fury
Hi! Super Mario Run WR holder here 👋 Regarding the viability of your "extreme" any% route, it's worth mentioning that SMR any% only takes into account "Time without loads" - that is, the time spent in actual gameplay. That would mean that, theoretically, you could take very long breaks between levels (to eat, go to the bathroom, and even to sleep) and, according to SMR speedruning rules, that time wouldn’t be counted! Which is a blessing considering how long the run would be. Anyway, great vid! I learned a lot with it, you deserve way more subs! 👍
Edit: Odme has now given Console Series a sub 12 time thanks to his speed in the 3D games, pushing the time down for Mainline Mario Series to a 14:07:03. Massive improvement yes, but also expected because I am not good in 3D Marios which make up like 80% of the run. Will be interesting to see if a new WR for Console Series or Handheld Series would be breaking that sub 14 barrier, or even a combination. Both still have possible improvements. One of the biggest challenges for me is to minimise any break time. That approach makes Console Series quite brutal, a lot to do with 13 games. For those who like facts, my Console Series PB has 3 mins and 26 seconds spent on switching games, no breaks outside of "natural" breaks like cutscenes, Handheld Series WR spent just 13 seconds switching between the 5 games in total. And don't even get me started on my SMW reset rate. My current set of splits has almost 500 attempts, of which roughly 400 are resets in SMW. Learning 0 Exit was worth the effort since it saves me 10 mins compared to what I was able to get in 11 Exit before that. Also some extra history on Handheld Series: SM64DS was originally included, but Kosmic's run was a trigger to run an internal vote between all runners and someone who was interested in trying to run it with the result being a majority for removing SM64DS. It was eliminating a potential grey area for a lot of messy discussions about rereleases and so on. Any% was in itself also one of the most brutal categories I ever ran in any game. SM64DS' glitches are unforgiving which may have caused some bias in the vote. (I used a route that only got one star, but is slower than the 3 Star route used by current WR because of different glitches, there are 2 glitch ways to get to upstairs early, one is keyless with 3 Stars, 1 Star route uses a clip to access Fire Sea early.) Kinda cool to be included in such a video. I could do a mainline run but my issue is just my lack of interest in it. Both Console Series and Handheld Series have a vastly different dynamic as runs and hasn't given me a reason to mix those 2 up so far. And yes, this whole concept of running multiple Mario games back to back is very very expensive. I own 5 consoles to not need to use any emulator with an expensive streaming setup to optimise all aspects of the inbetween games. The single most expensive item is of course a 3DS with a capture card mod. And honestly people with way cheaper setups could easily beat me on skill.
Thank you so much for the extra info! Watching through your runs was really impressive and I can't imagine how much is done behind the scenes, keep it up!
And another update to this, Handheld WR has also now fallen finally, Mainline Mario Series could be completed in 14:04:45 with both WRs together, JoshTGR just got a new WR with a 2:15:36. For fastest possible time done by a single person the time is still at the old mark with 14:55:37 since Odme does not go for Handheld Series and JoshTGR has not considered Console Series. But I do hope to see this fall down in the future. Unfortunately my time is up for going fast in RTA terms, I got hit very hard by asthma, leaving me unable to complete longer runs without some breaks to just recover some energy. But also our boards did change to include an extra IGT timing that excludes all time spent between games (thanks to the community to saying yes to this idea, very awesome
With the total time and money needed, I'm gonna assume that if anyone crazy enough were to try this, most of the run will be done on an emulator. Amazing video!
Emulator is 100% the way to go. Nintendo could honestly make bank on this idea. They could basically determine the category themself by what games are included, and sell the bundle for like 300 to 500. Yeah, that is pretty high, but I really think it would sell.
Just wanted to say that it's so nice to see Super Mario Maker 2 get recognition for being a legitimate speed game, whether or not it falls under your "extreme" category. I feel like it gets easily overlooked just because the Story Mode isn't exactly what most people play SMM2 for, so seeing it get that kind of acknowledgement here is awesome, to say the least! (Same goes for the other extreme cases, but I'm a bit biased. :P ) That aside, this was a really well made video, and I seriously respect the amount of time and effort that must've gone into putting it all together! Thanks for including me in the video, and keep up the great work, dude!
One note: jan Misali's name is derived from a language called Toki Pona. The "jan" part is not a first name, but a sort of honorific, a little bit similar to calling somebody Doctor before their name. Except this one means Person! Great video, fascinating watch!
The fact that it's theoretically possible to speedrun the entire mainline mario collection in multiple hours shorter time than it takes to 100% games like Odyssey and Breath of the Wild is nothing short of insane

that's so cool! Kinda makes sense then that the dude is so interested in languages! Was super surprised to see him show up in this context lol, he definitely deserves the recognition!
i love how you broke everything down in the end there. Every time i thought "what if x" or "oh but you forgot x" you immediately answered my question. Quality video!
My general rule-of-thumb would be to include ports and remakes only if there are substantial changes to mechanics or level design. For example, I'd exclude All-Stars and Advance 4, but include Advance 1. Also, I'm genuinely not sure why people started recently calling Special a port of SMB1. It's a different game with different levels, new enemies, and powerups that just happens to share a similar aesthetic. If we're calling Special a port, the same logic should rightly be applied to Lost Levels, and all of the New SMB games after the first DS one.
I really strongly think Special is a game of its own. I've played through it, and contrary to the opinion stated in this video, I don't think the changes can be described as only being necessary due to technical limitations. In a certain sense there's more that's different from SMB1 than shared.
Special is absolutely it's own game. It's surreal to hear people argue otherwise. The levels are entirely different, there are added enemies and powerups. If we're considering it a port, then so is Lost Levels. And basically every New SMB sequel is a port of the first one.
For Yoshi's Island, I'd argue it is a Super Mario franchise game on the extreme of course. But only because "technically" mario is in the game. And while the physics and gameplay are different from Super Mario World, they aren't all that much different from other games in the series. Feel like the game just got kicked to the curb lol. Another thing would have to be All-Stars. Feel like they all shouldn't be counted as 1, it'd be like if Super Mario 3D all-stars actually *remade* the games. Feel like those all would be considered separate games, but since All-Stars is closer to a reskin it was discounted. Aside from those, amazing video and was entertained. Appreciate the list/video compiled, and think you did a great job. Edit: Watching it back I realize that adding to the number doesn't really mean anything, since you don't discount the games included in the single count. If they were to run All-Stars they'd have to beat all the games. If they were to run the gameboy color version of smb, they'd still run both. Fair enough, and I'm happy with that tbh as long as the games are run hypothetically lol
woah jan misali reference. I did not expect to see that, their videos have occupied my thoughts recently. in a way this is like a sequel to their video
I was skeptical at first based on the title, but this topic surprised me. I really enjoyed it. It would be so interesting to see this done relay style at a GDQ.
I think that in the interest of making a category that's interesting to play and to watch, I think re-releases are out of place. My opinion (which also deals with which category you should play in Galaxy) is that when there are multiple options for which version to play for a given game, it's the runner's choice. The theory run would take the version with the fastest time, but familiarity or reliability or even routing concerns like the overhead of switching between games might play into the decision.
For the Mario Maker games, 100 Mario Challenge/Endless Mario Challenge speedruns also exist, but those would be so random they would be hard to consider for even an extreme marathon.
For VS Super Mario Bros., are you counting the price for an original arcade unit? Its the technical original hardware for the game. That being said, the machine's code is basically an NES with some modifications to fit the the arcade set-up. As well for Super Mario Run, what phone did you use as a baseline? Any relatively recent Android or IPhone can play the game, and Android phones are vastly more affordable. The game differs very little between platforms, too.
When it comes to rereleases, i would say that its best to have the speedrunning community to pick which of the options is most viable, interesting, fun etc and drop the rest. When it comes to something like bowsers fury (assuming the game containing the extra mode isnt selected as the preferred version) just add that part of the game on its own.
I don't agree on your logic for some of the ports but where I draw the line is including Super Mario Run. Personally I consider freedom of movement within all represented cartesian axes to be a requirement for a game to be a platformer, in Super Mario Run you can only truly control Mario's position on the Y axis, and is therefore not a true platformer in my eyes.
I would use: - All mainline games (Using remakes when possible) - Yoshi's Island games (platformers) - Any Mario Party game that has a single--player level/world experience (like Party 1 and 2) - Glitchless any% category for all when possible
Depending on the categories you could also make an argument for the sm64 shindou version, as patching out the blj transforms any% into an entirely different run
to answer the question of who will be the second, Sean Raider has been learning all of the games on stream and is preparing to do a Mainline Mario Marathon!
There could absolutely be multiple marathon categories. Obviously Any% and 100% (have fun with Odyssey on that one!), but also categories like Any% No Wrongwarp/Credits Warp or Any% No Major Glitches (e.g. 70 Star in 64 rather than 0, 1, or 16 Star).
From a speedrun viewers perspective for me a marathon like this sounds tideous. Maybe as a one time event this might be interesting, maybe within an GDQ event?
So if I spend 3000 I can have every Mario game on your list plus the consoles to play them Sans the backwards/compatible options. If I just started now and didn't stop my clock till it's done would that count? Meaning tomatoe played them all back to back for 2 days straight that would be the WR? Or is it more technical than that. I c how confusing it is but I'd love to try
Super Mario RPG absolutely deserves to be in the Extreme Category - despite the heavy RPG emphasis it 100% does have a heavy focus on platforming ESPECIALLY speedrunning it to avoid enemies.
In the VC release of the original SMB for 3DS, in 1-1 the first enemy you encounter is a beetle instead of the Goomba in the NES version. What version is this? And might it even be a different game?
On the note of how expensive this gets, you _could_ instead decide to just run a romhack series that only requires 1 game on 1 emulator for PC. Deciding which romhacks to run might be a bit harder because there are so many releases by so many authors and it never stops, but one somewhat established choice is the Star Revenge series from 1 to 8, which isn't very popular because Star Revenge 2 is a kaizo and pretty difficult to beat in a marathon run.
If someone were to do Kosmic's challenge in 2024, it would look something like: SMB any%- 5m 2J any% 8-4- 10m SMB2 any%- 10m SML any%- 15m SMB3 glitchless any%- 15m SMW 11 exit- 20m SML2 any% glitchless- 30m SM64 16 star- 30m SMS any%- 2h NSMB any%- 35m Galaxy any%- 2h45m NSMBW any%- 35m Galaxy 2 any%- 3h30m 3D Land any%- 1h30m NSMB2 any%- 45m NSMBU any%- 45m 3D World any%- 2h Odyssey any%- 1h30m Bowser’s Fury any% 40m Wonder All Royal Seeds- 2h30m Total- 20 games in about 20hrs! Cool to see that all 20 mainline games can still be beaten in under 24 hours.
I feel like New Luigi U Should've been added as well, as it's basically a completely different game and it's all time challenges, perfect for speed running
I really do not believe there is much of a discussion here. Well, there is a discussion, but it does not have to be agreed upon. The simple answer is different categories that have different game lineups. No matter how any one person feels about their definitive list, I think we all agree that more people participating is best.
Someone has already speedrunned all 23 mainline hp games 100% it took him 70+ hours of game play to do atleast he did take breaks so including breaks it took him 84 hours that is really insane so maybe we will see someone beating all mario games someday about just over a year ago I ended up beating 50 games that I personally owned in just the matter of a 24 hour period they were short games but still I think if or when I get my capture card working again I think I'm going to atleast attempt to do it again and it will be recorded and uploaded this time around 😀
I'm pretty sure if you want to refer to jan Misali by a single name, it would be "Misali", not "jan" since jan just means "person" in toki pona. Sorry for the minor nitpick, great video as always!
My list of every Super Mario game: Super Mario Bros Super Mario Bros: The Lost Levels Super Mario Bros 2 Super Mario Bros 3 Super Mario World Super Mario Land Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins Super Mario 64 Super Mario Sunshine Super Mario Galaxy Super Mario Galaxy 2 New Super Mario Bros New Super Mario Bros Wii New Super Mario Bros 2 New Super Mario Bros U Super Mario 3D Land Super Mario 3D World Super Mario Odyssey Total: 18 Additional: Super Mario All Stars Super Mario 3D All Stars Super Mario Run Super Mario 64 DS Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury Super Mario Maker Super Mario Maker 2 Super Mario Bros U Deluxe New Super Luigi U Super Mario Bros 35 Total: 10 Grand Total: 28
My mainline Super Mario list goes as follows: Game & Watch/All-Stars/All-Night Nippon/VS/Super Mario Bros./Special/Deluxe All-Stars/Super Mario Bros. 2 All-Stars/BS/Super Mario USA/Super Mario Advance All-Stars/BS/Super Mario Bros. 3/Super Mario Advance 4 Super Mario Land All-Stars/Super Mario World/Super Mario Advance 2 Super Mario Land 2 Super Mario 64/DS Super Mario Sunshine New Super Mario Bros. Super Mario Galaxy New Super Mario Bros. Wii Super Mario Galaxy 2 Super Mario 3D Land New Super Mario Bros. 2 New Super Mario Bros. U/Luigi U/Deluxe Super Mario 3D World/Bowser's Fury Super Mario Run (?) Super Mario Odyssey
I'd dispute that the SMAS versions of the NES Mario games should be considered separate, and an "extreme run" would use either the optimal version. Your argument about differences in physics and glitches are valid, but if you include minor differences in gameplay as a separate game, then NES SMB3 would count as 2 entries given that the Japanese version handles "powering down" differently from US/PAL releases. Yoshi's Island (and hence Yoshi's New Island) definitely deserve to be in the extreme list. You may be playing as Yoshi for most of the game, but you control baby Mario once you grab the starman. If you are counting Mario 64 DS (a game where you start off as Yoshi (and in as speedrun would spend most of the game as Yoshi) it makes little sense to discount SMW2.
I can definitely see both those arguments being made, down the road I may make some sort of follow up addressing some of these concerns. Thanks for your input!
In my opinion rereleases and ports shouldn't count. For NSMBU, only NSMBU and SMLU should be counted, the bundle and Deluxe versions are just modified versions of those games. Oh yea and Bowser's Fury should totally count as a separate game.
The other day I beat 50 games in just 1 single day 25 dvd games and 25 video games I beat the 25 video games first in just over 5 hours and then took a hour break then came back and beat 25 DVD games and well the 25 DVD games only took 3 hours including the break and the other small breaks in between took just over 9 hours RTA I didn't record myself doing it because well I don't have anything that record it long enough I only have my phone to record things on that's it I will be able to use my capture card soon though when I do I will be recording longer and much better videos but for now do shorter runs and WRS
This is probably the happiest I've been with a video in a while and I'm glad a lot are feeling the same.
Let's keep it going, make sure to subscribe to be apart of the first 10,000 :)

You might have a better chance of Grand Poo Bear organizing such an event.
running a single game series for a whole day isn't really GDQ's style, i imagine people would lose interest quickly with such a long relay
@@grb_bngr1818 I could see a relay of 3d allstars or something, super mario 64, then sunshine, then galaxy, it wouldnt be too long either
@Burst Your Bubble ye, the online ones don't have the same energy as the offline ones did, but the last offline one was pretty cool

Me an intellectual: puts all the games on a Christmas wish list.

You forgot Dendy Mario. In Soviet Russia, Dendy Mario plays you.
Neat analysis video! Thanks for uploading!
audio is sounding great, man. good to see you're still putting in mad work, it's really paying off 👊
Happy to see others notice!
I think that in the interest of making a category that's interesting to play and to watch, I think re-releases are out of place. My opinion (which also deals with which category you should play in Galaxy) is that when there are multiple options for which version to play for a given game, it's the runner's choice. The theory run would take the version with the fastest time, but familiarity or reliability or even routing concerns like the overhead of switching between games might play into the decision.
i put the video on watch later and finally watched it, good work
Can’t wait to watch this when I get home!
For the Mario Maker games, 100 Mario Challenge/Endless Mario Challenge speedruns also exist, but those would be so random they would be hard to consider for even an extreme marathon.
waiting for the premiere, excited for this one!
Storster join the cult of Davis Mills
I would use:
- All mainline games (Using remakes when possible)
- Yoshi's Island games (platformers)
- Any Mario Party game that has a single--player level/world experience (like Party 1 and 2)
- Glitchless any% category for all when possible
Depending on the categories you could also make an argument for the sm64 shindou version, as patching out the blj transforms any% into an entirely different run
to answer the question of who will be the second, Sean Raider has been learning all of the games on stream and is preparing to do a Mainline Mario Marathon!
Kosmic looking at this vid like "Super Mario Speedrun? Who's up for Round 2!"
I would be interested in all of the combined TAS times for the extreme list!
There are over 300 Mario games, but only a few are Mainline.
Storster just coconut mauled everyone at the beginning
I personally feel like every Super Mario game should be run as Mario to count. It's not a Super Toad speedrun.
You're really underrated
can’t wait to eat lunch and binge this video
underrated as FUCK video. deserves way more views.
that's what she said
Super Mario RPG absolutely deserves to be in the Extreme Category - despite the heavy RPG emphasis it 100% does have a heavy focus on platforming ESPECIALLY speedrunning it to avoid enemies.
In the VC release of the original SMB for 3DS, in 1-1 the first enemy you encounter is a beetle instead of the Goomba in the NES version. What version is this? And might it even be a different game?
That generally occurs in the second quest mode that unlocks once you beat 8-4 once. That's in the original SMB1 Too.
@@Storster thanks, didn't know about that!
OMEGALUL THIS CHALLENGE COSTS TWICE AS MUCH AS MY GAMING PC. if ur wondering, it’s a pretty good build
I feel like on the extreme end, we should also include Donkey Kong and Mario Bros from the arcade era as well
On the note of how expensive this gets, you _could_ instead decide to just run a romhack series that only requires 1 game on 1 emulator for PC.
If it doesn't include hotel mario it doesn't count
Kosmic did a speedrun of everysuper Mario game
If someone were to do Kosmic's challenge in 2024, it would look something like:
SMB any%- 5m
2J any% 8-4- 10m
SMB2 any%- 10m
SML any%- 15m
SMB3 glitchless any%- 15m
SMW 11 exit- 20m
SML2 any% glitchless- 30m
SM64 16 star- 30m
SMS any%- 2h
NSMB any%- 35m
Galaxy any%- 2h45m
NSMBW any%- 35m
Galaxy 2 any%- 3h30m
3D Land any%- 1h30m
NSMB2 any%- 45m
NSMBU any%- 45m
3D World any%- 2h
Odyssey any%- 1h30m
Bowser’s Fury any% 40m
Wonder All Royal Seeds- 2h30m
Total- 20 games in about 20hrs!
Cool to see that all 20 mainline games can still be beaten in under 24 hours.
i "like" how what people clicked on this video for is only 33 minutes into the video
With the amount of platforming and skill play SMRPG has, I feel like it should be included
KosmicXSmallant will be a perfect combo for this challenge.
You deserve more views
I feel like New Luigi U Should've been added as well, as it's basically a completely different game and it's all time challenges, perfect for speed running
great video
27 hours, 44 minutes, 42 seconds
I really do not believe there is much of a discussion here. Well, there is a discussion, but it does not have to be agreed upon.
The simple answer is different categories that have different game lineups.
No matter how any one person feels about their definitive list, I think we all agree that more people participating is best.
I really enjoyed watching this with you. Back for my second viewing 😁👉🏻👈🏻
Yay new store stero video!
i dont think super mario super should be counted, cause it looks like a torture no human should have to endure
i mean shindou version patches out BLJs which is a pretty notable change to the speedrun, especially since you didn't mention it
It doesn't fit the rules but I'd love to see runners include Mario Teaches Typing 1+2 for style points.
What about the Super Mario Bros. Game & Watch?
Someone has already speedrunned all 23 mainline hp games 100% it took him 70+ hours of game play to do atleast he did take breaks so including breaks it took him 84 hours that is really insane so maybe we will see someone beating all mario games someday about just over a year ago I ended up beating 50 games that I personally owned in just the matter of a 24 hour period they were short games but still I think if or when I get my capture card working again I think I'm going to atleast attempt to do it again and it will be recorded and uploaded this time around 😀
adds a letter to a consul after years of calling us dumb "U" its different
I'm pretty sure if you want to refer to jan Misali by a single name, it would be "Misali", not "jan" since jan just means "person" in toki pona.
Sorry for the minor nitpick, great video as always!
Kosmic already did speedran all the mario games

Whwt about shindou edition?
Oh he talks about it

interesting topic ngl
Did you really think it was necessary to have a 1:30 minute long intro?
Jan mi-sally... Ouggh...
well if you want to be EXTREME you should just count every official Mario game
from Super Mario Bros to Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle
~~you could just multiply the time of a typical run of a game by the % of people who consider it a mainline mario game~~
Personally, I think that super mario 35 is a spin off. Not a mario game.
Should’ve included Mario Teaches Typing smh
Just a note:
SMW Yoshi island should be in the “super Mario” series seeing it’s a prelude to Mario’s adventure in the first place
Joined at the end of the premiere :(
Yes 👍
you make cool videos
Yeah I agree Mario RPG / Paper Mario / Mario & Luigi shouldn't be included - those are RPG games.
