  • Welcome to Backcountry Gear Shed! This is my first video and one that I was really excited to bring you. This is a brand new hatchet from BPS Knives. I don't think there is much out there in terms of reviews yet, at least not as of about a week ago when I ordered mine, so I wanted to share this first look. Sorry for the poor sound quality! I will buy a mic and try to speak up in the future, but you only get one shot at a first impression so I decided to publish it anyway.

Bro, you are really approaching borderline unintentional ASMR with your videos. But I like it. Keep posting.

Good choice! I actually just got my first BPS knife not too long ago, the BPS Adventurer. I have quickly become a fan though. I have since purchased the BPS HK4 Camping Knife and the Savage, and I have the HK1 on the way. Overall I am very happy with all of them, with my only complaint so far being the fitment of the sheath on the Savage. It's actually surprisingly bad, which is disappointing since in general BPS sheaths seem to be really nice. I'll do a video of it and my other BPS knives soon. Other than that sheath fitment issue I have nothing bad to say about any of my BPS purchases so far.

Wish the handle didnt go all the way up and was styled more like a budget silky Ono hatchet. If you did want to use it to baton through a small log for wood processing, well one it doesnt have a decent end to hammer on, and two the handle gets in the way of splitting wood. I know its not really designed for this task, but with a small change it would have probably worked as well as the more expensive Silky hatchet.

I agree with your concerns about the handles going so far up. They definitely seem vulnerable to being broken off from batoning. I have another hatchet from Gerber you might want to check out. The Gerber Gear Pack Hatchet. It's not in the same class as the BPS in my opinion but functionally it would be pretty similar without the drawbacks you mentioned. It also has a full tang construction and seems to be pretty durable. This isn't an affiliate link or anything, just sharing info. I appreciate the comment and would definitely appreciate a sub if you're into this type of content. Cheers!

how do you think it would work for general camp tasks and cutting up game ? deer mostly . chopping though ribs etc.

I think it would probably work well for game processing. It's very sharp. The blade will slice paper on edge, albeit not as smoothly as my BPS knives, but for an axe it's impressive. The scandi ground blade should be very sturdy and I think up to the task. I'd go for it. When it comes to a general camp axe though, I think it might be a little light. It's just over a pound, which I think is really making a compromise for weight savings. It's great for what it is, especially if you are trying to minimize weight for something you will be packing around a lot, but for a camp hatchet I might go with something just a little heavier like the Beavercraft Carving Axe which weighs in at more like 1.5 pounds overall. It also has the benefit of a more wedge shaped head that would help for splitting tasks. Thanks for your comment. Happy hunting!

@BackcountryGearShed well was 9 months ago I watched your video and you msged me. I finally saved up and bought it. Got in mail today. It's perfect weight and size. The handle even though it's weird shaped fit my hand well and swings good. Definitely easy to choke up on to slice though meat. As I did want it for game possessing first and camp tasks second. I will probably cut the point off back so it's flat for hammering tent pegs etc. Wonderful axe. Thank you

No doubt! My fixed blade knife on my belt is usually my last line of defense, but if I were carrying this instead it would serve a similar function. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Thanks for your feedback! Please note you are commenting on the first video I ever put on my channel. There should be a noticeable improvement in my newer content, but I'm sure my videos won't please everyone. Take care.
