Glad to help. Some advice. Sand down the inside edge of the sheath where it retains the knife handle. It’ll scratch up the Micarta a little, you’ll see what I mean. AND. Don’t be a dipshit like me and wash the sheath out afterwards. It’s super tight fit and any grit in there will scratch the shit out of your blade. I don’t care too much considering how much I’ve been using and beating on it, but still. Lengthwise scratches look like shit.

Thanks for the comparison and review. I don't think I would have changed my decision, as I bought the USGI version, but i feel better about it. To me, the variation in used was a bit much and I wanted new, if possible. I really didn't want to go more than what I paid on Amazon. I also got the poncho too. Thought about the blanket but since I already have a 100% wool blanket, I will just go with it. I live in the south so with only a few weeks of exception, winter isn't too cold. I don't understand the reasoning behind making a minimalist survival kit. I mean, you could make a kit that can easily be carried, with inexpensive but much more useful gear. I'm cheap, like professionally cheap. You can make a belt kit light enough (under 10 lbs) to carry all day every day. So instead of minimalizing your survival, you end up making survival into more like camping. Why make it so you just get by? Why would anyone ever make a kit that minimalizes your chances to survive a bad situation?

I'd say there is nothing wrong with this knife, but I intend to return mine to Amazon. The handle on the Savage is just too small for my hand, and I really don't have that large of a hand. It would be perfect for smaller hands though. I also could not get the knife more than halfway into that really well made and crafted sheath. The fit and finish some complain about where the steel is higher than the wood was very minor on this one. You had to look closely to notice it. Mine did have just a bit of bend to the tip. Again, many might not even notice. If I was still younger, I might have kept it and put it to work, but I must admit, I was curious and wanted to see for myself how nice these were for the money. I believe that blade shape is well suited to doing some accurate cutting. It is a really nice size, but I'm just not that comfortable with the grip size. It might be perfect for a youngster or lady though.

Thanks for watching and commenting! Most of the gear in this video is brand new, but I've also used a lot of these tools extensively. For example, I have been using Swiss Army Knives off and on for over 30 years. My first knife was a Swiss Army Knife. I've used ferro rods and strikers to light many fires using natural tinder from my geographic area, but honestly haven't used Vaseline and cotton balls much. It's just a backup in case I can't find my preferred natural tinder. I haven't used this filter yet, but have used other lifestraw and other straw type filters. I've used this model of Princeton Tec headlamp extensively. I own 5 of them. I haven't needed a signal mirror or whistle yet, but still think they are worthwhile to include. Was there a particular item in this kit you were concerned about?

The steel is perhaps the worst of the modern knife steels available. When you wiped the blade to remove the oil a lot of rust came off. If a newly oiled knife, sealed in its box, rusted so badly, imagine what will happen when it goes out to work in the mountains. A cheap wood was chosen for handles, very soft and without any attempt at a quality finish. The vertical stop of the woods in the part of the blade is completely bad taste. I don't think it would cost too much if there was a nice gentle curve instead of that vertical finish it has. Now about the case it is unethical of the company to fool their customers with such quality. For €50 I bought the Japanese-made Falcon Altema 1 knife with a leather sheath, 440C steel, micarta and convex sharpening. A perfect knife for all jobs.

I got that genuine US Government issue woobie from this listing on Amazon: US Military Poncho Liner Woobie Blanket, ACU a.co/d/hKhyHSx The seller was Redemption Tactical. I bought two and they were both in great condition, and a great value at around $23 each. As for compression sacks, I'm still looking for the perfect small sack for a single woobie, but the best I've found so far is from MTac. M-Tac Sleeping Bag Compression Stuff Sack Military Water Resistant Compression Bag Lightweight Nylon Compression Sack for Travel, Camping, Hiking, Outdoor a.co/d/aFYGsWL I bought one in size medium and it's a little big for a woobie, but I'm going to use it with an Arcturus wool blanket roll. Informative video but I had to press my phone against my ear to hear you...any reason for whispering?

Sorry about that. I'm not whispering. My phone mic just didn't pick up my voice very well. I use a different mic these days and adjust the gain before I upload, but my voice is still hard to mic. I have a really deep voice and my mics all seem to be more sensitive to high pitched sounds. I think you'd notice at least some improvement in my newer videos though. This was only the second video I uploaded to my channel. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Food. Also, you should buy a foam sleeping or yoga mat. You can get hypothermic if you sleep directly on the ground, even in summer. the ground is cooler than you are and saps heat from your body. A foam mat will stop this. Also if you cut the mat into a few pieces that fit the back of the pack, it gives your back protection from the gear inside and it stiffens up your pack a bit, making it easier to carry. And if you duct tape the pieces back together to give it an accordion effect. it still works perfectly as a sleeping or sit mat.

one thing I would get, is a sit pad. something made of a stiffer foam. I use a cut to size chunk of a yoga mat. I cut it to fit the back of my pack. It gives the pack some support and gives you something to sit on besides the cold hard ground. You should be able to cut 2 or 3 out of one cheap yoga mat that you can likely find at a dollar store.

I actually got some sit pads recently but I haven't featured them in any videos. They're nothing fancy, but they are the foam type with the round indents and bumps. They work great and weigh almost nothing. They're also a really good deal. They're definitely worth carrying!
