  • Bezel Settings for Cabochon Gemstones On a Curved Surface ( Inner Bezels are Key!)-I will show you how to use an inner bezel to avoid common problems with bezel setting a gemstone on a curved surface and positions your stone at the perfect height for bezel setting. Using an inner bezel also solves the problem of setting cabochon stones with rounded bottoms, a very common bezel setting scenario. These bezel setting techniques are exactly the same whether goldsmithing or silversmithing, I usually make all of my inner bezels from fine silver.

    Thoroughly enjoyed your video. I plan on setting a rectangular stone in a box ring. .... and, using the walls to hold the stone. The walls are actually 20 gauge silver and instead of adding a step bezel as you advise, I want to thin the thick walls and by doing so, creating a ledge (shelf) for the stone to sit on. In that way, the walls would be easier to work with setting the stone. I have also soldered a small rectangle on the curved inner part of the ring to guarantee that it will not be wobbly.
    From what I have been told, I must use a ball burr to gradually reduce the thickness of the thick wall that will act as a bezel.
    Kindly advise. Thank you!

      That will work but it takes lots of practice to really control the thickness and carve an even seat. I suggest you do at least one practice bezel to try it out. :) So glad you enjoyed the video!

    Finally, permission to not have that inner bezel fit tightly in there! Properly, yes, but not so tight as to be difficult to remove it for adjustments. I've been taught that the inner bezel should fit with absolutely no gaps, then soldered in place inside the outer bezel - The horror!!! Great demo and it makes so much sense. Thanks.

      Hi Linda Super tight fit and soldered in only makes sense if the back is open. Otherwise, it is pointless!
      Welcome to the rest of your life :)

    Do you solder the inner bezel to the ring ?

    • @JewelryArts
      @JewelryArts  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No, the stone holds it in place. :)

      No, I don't bother because it gets pinned in place during setting. :)
