- How to Unset a Bezel Set Sapphire Cabochon Using the Unsetting Tool from my Master Setting Tool Set -How to Remove Gemstones From a Bezel Setting-Unsetting Tool for Cabochon or Faceted Gemstone Bezels - How to use and hold the Unsetting Tool to unset a bezel setting for a cabochon or faceted gemstone. You use this tool to remove a stone from a bezel setting without damaging the stone or destroying the bezel. No one wants to remove a stone from a bezel setting but it happens from time to time and now you have the right bezel unsetting tool.
To date myself, when I was an apprentice goldsmith, laser soldering wasn't available to repair jewelry safely with the stone in place. I had to learn to unset my bezel settings for cabochon or faceted gemstones to safely repair my jewelry without damage to the stone or bezel. Necessity is always the mother of invention, so I learned how to quickly and safely unset my bezel settings without damaging my faceted or cabochon gemstones.

I have and love your setting tool set even though I've made some of my own tools that are similar to a few of them (brass pushers for instance) it's still so nice to have them organized in a case, with nice handles and highly polished. I have used this unsetting tool once before pretty successfully, but now with your tips about the one area of weakness focus and then sliding it around it will be much better next time!
I am so glad you like them! I designed these tools around the tools we handmake in the studio so I have no doubt yours were quite similar. :)
This was very helpful, thank you! I may have to purchase that little tool, it looks really helpful. So far I haven't had to ever remove a stone from a bezel, but have often wondered if it's possible to do without destroying the bezel.
It isn’t something you will need to do all the time but it will happen from time to time. 😃
Why was I under the impression that natural stones needed to be set with "breathing holes" under it? This is a solid bottom. I guess something someone told me 20 years ago and stuck with me.
I have no idea, there are reasons to have an open back, such as ease of cleaning but they don't breathe! :)
Do you sell the unsetting tool by its self? I can’t find one anywhere that doesn’t come in a set and I desperately need just that tool
Sorry, it just comes in the set.
