- Today's rescue story is about two dwarf hamsters, living in what I can only describe as a Frankenstein cage that was put together with parts of other cages. The horrors of this thing is insane besides the ware damage from being used. Also our two rescues had quite the long story about their identity and what they've been doing inside that cage of theirs. Munchies place made me learn a lot about the hamsters and I really want to have a hamster
she does so much to prove her point, i know hamster care and never used those cages and i learned so much, even though i never used those cages but i never understood how bad they were. this is so bad

When I wasn't aware of how bad these were for my hamster, he managed to chew through *three* tube ends AND a hole cover. *In two months.* Don't underestimate the amount of chewing damage a stressed hamster can do. [don't worry, he's got a nice bin cage now. I'm happier, and so is he.]

@@stonks1475 yes. I also think your entire enclosure for your hamster shouldn't all be DIY some of that need to be solid things for your hamster. (In my opinion) especially because now because of covetous pray boxes down so has chemicals on them which is bad for your animal

Black is only a Campbell's color (but also can probably be found in hybrids). More likely than not they are probably both hybrid dwarves if they were being bred by someone who doesn't know the difference between a robo and a hybrid/ww/campbell's dwarf.
Oh goodness.I was on a group I got kicked out. The person was saying oh we are doing things that’s not the norm... here is my Syrian, robo and dwarf in the same cage for an experiment. I said they would never mix in the wild and boom kicked. Also found more things about the owner but I don’t wanna say. So some groups are not okay. :/ I have a group and admin and I post vids of TH-camrs I trust, like you , Victoria and Erin.

This is nostalgic because when I had my first hamsters(they where 2 dwarf hamsters. I wanted gerbils, but my parents got me hamsters accidentally. I made them a bin cage and also they never fought) I had a tiny cage but I wanted something better and I saw the 2 floor crittertrail. I was so happy because my hamsters where climbing and running on the wheel. But then like a month later after I found your channel and other hanster youtubers I was mad because I had waisted 60 dollars of my own money to after a month make a bin cage. But yeah I made them a bin cage and they where much happier and also I was happier. Overall thanks for making this channel and informoin people about good hamster cear :) ❤️

I really can understand you that you're freaking out. Pet shops are giving a damn to sell suitable things for a hamster and they're not giving a damn to change it. And they don't give a damn to advise their customers.
And I don't understand why it's not changing...
Maybe that's why I prefer animals/pets to humans...

After three years of fighting with our higher-ups about cage sizes, the pet store I work at has *finally* phased out the tiniest "hamster" cages that I would never even suggest as a carrier (which the customers still kept buying because, obviously, the pet store employees are only trying to sell a bigger cage because it's more expensive! smh) and brought in some large ones in their place.
A lot of pet store employees do care, but when the CEOs don't give a flip, the employees can do nothing about it. All we can do is either tell the customer to look for a good cage online, or work with what we've got. Which is, more often than not, not good enough.
Keep in mind, too, that some pet store employees don't care for rodents but have gone into the trade because of their passion for dogs or cats, and all their knowledge about the small pets comes from the same flawed sources that the customers get theirs from. Yes, the stores should still train them to know of the proper small pet husbandry, but then who would sell those tiny, crappy cages that the people who actually know what the minimum requirements for rodents are will scoff at?
A story comes to mind, where recently I've worked with a woman from another store from the same chain. She was a great employee, you could get so much valuable information about dog and cat husbandry from her, and her rodent dietary knowledge was up to par. But then, she told me that a male rat can impregnate a female rabbit and that what comes out is not pretty. I looked at her, waiting for her to laugh or indicate in some way that she was joking. No, she was serious and told me to look it up. I did, just to point her out that this myth was widely known to be just that - a myth - well over ten years ago. She shrugged, and I am sure she's still telling her customers about rat-rabbit hybrids when the opportunity comes up. Some people just refuse to learn and change their mind on things they believe are right.

@@Kainbunny To be honest I really wonder if this is just an american petstores thing or if the petstore I had an internship was just an exception. They sell several type of fish there, guinea pigs, rabbits, gerbils, hamsters, chinchillas and mice. No feeder pets. I can only speak about the mice and hamsters since I do not know about the proper care for the other mentioned animals, but what I saw made me quite happy. The cages were obviously too small for them too live together in forever (and hammys shouldn't live together at all), however they are planned to be sold quickly and they sell pretty well. They correctly sexed the hamsters and mice, so no pregnant mommas in there. Had no breeds mixed up. But besides the cage size, they were wonderful. Both the mice and hamster cages had soo soo many things to climb on, hide, to chew on, etc. Beautifully decorated and with mostly just wood things, no plastic was in there. The people I worked with were well informed too and when I asked for a job training there they actually told me that I will put a lot of work into research and learning about the proper care and in general about the animals they have. Like the boss gave an hour long speech on it. The only reason why I didnt apply for a job training was because of their high expectations with math. I suck at it lol. No Crittertrails are sold here, but the cages are still not perfect sadly, some are definitely a bit too small for certain hamster breeds and may only fit for a single male mouse (they have the size of 20 gallon tank mostly) but they also have some bigger cages too, they are harder to come buy though so when I did get mice I bought one online instead, that was not only just half the price of what I first thought of buying, it was also bigger!
@@cupnoodlesramen Definitely not an American thing, as I live and work in one of the EU countries. But most definitely, some individual places are better than others! It all depends on the team, its size and whether or not the store is a part of a big chain or not - at least that's my guess.
Whenever i see these cages i just cringe and all i can think about is my first hamster Amber. I begged for years for a hamster and did so much research that that’s all i ever talked about. For my 13th birthday my dad got me an Amber colored Syrian. The first thing i noticed was that my dad got a kaytee critter trail cage. When i asked if we could take the cage back to get a 40 gallon he said no. He knew they needed at least a 40 gallon to be happy but he really liked the way the kaytee cage was. I begged for months to let me get her a bigger cage and one day he finally agreed. The biggest he let me get was a 20 gallon long. She was a lot happier but still very stressed. After a few more months of begging he finally let me get a 40! She lived in the 40 for another few months but sadly passed soon after getting the proper sized cage. I got a djungarian hamster which i named Mocha and she loved her life! She passed not too long ago and i plan on getting another Syrian as soon as my housing situation gets figured out. I’m really hoping to get an ikea detolf!

Just a reminder that in a month or two many hamsters and mice that were christmas gifts will be given out on all the possible sites. Please, if someone can get a hamster adopt, not buy. Many people who have snakes are waiting for such occastion 😟
Oh those poor hamsters. That food was completely caked in mold. What the hell were those people thinking? I'm glad they decided to sell them and they have a better home now.

I used to house my small rodents in that satellite wheel cage, because I was young and thought that wheel and the spiral ramp was the coolest thing ever... I feel so ashamed. One thing I can say is even though I had that satellite cage for way longer than I should have, because I should have done more research, my cage never had that caked on white stuff it was always super clean because I scrubbed it.
Luckily I did more research with my current hamster, which is a winter white, and she is in a 40 gallon breeder tank she has six to eight inches of bedding on one side. I'm still learning all the time but I'm definitely trying. I have you and people like Victoria Raechel to thank ❤️💖❤️ Cotton thanks you too 🥰
Thank you for all that you do. I have learned so much from your videos, and love your humor & rage about the horrible enclosures. I agree with everything you said about the difference between supporting a big pet store chains & supporting an individual. I rescued my current hamster from an owner, however the hamster came from a local pet store chain. Rash decision, just like you made, but well worth it as the little one now lives a wonderful life. It makes it easier when you know that you did the right thing. Thank you for all that you do !!!

So I am 13 and I have had one hamster. When I first got him, I started with a critter trail. Within a week of getting the critter trail my hamster got out 2 times! Once that happened the 2nd time I got a 567 sq. in bin cage. Then about 3 months later I got the ikea detolf and my baby LOVES it.

When I was very young I had that same 3-tier kaytee critter trail. I kept two Syrians in there, one long hair and one short coat. I loved them to death and looking back on it I feel so bad. One did bite a hole in the other and even after that I didn’t know better and still kept them in there. They lived for 4 years which looking back is insane especially with the stress they went through which is way more obvious when you’re educated on your small animals.
I have learned and I now have 3 wonderful hamster all in separate big bin cages.

I was just watching your good and bad Craigslist pet ads when this popped up
When I got my first hamster since being a kid a few months back I originally bought a Kaytee cage. That night I watched one of your videos and felt horrible for putting her in it so I made a bin cage the next day and returned the Kaytee one. Sadly that hamster escaped and passed away from injuries she received during her escape. But I now have a male Syrian in the bin cage (that I have modified to prevent future escapes) and my dad is going to be building me a custom larger cage here soon.
Those cages are frustrating, they’re a pain to clean, a pain to take apart, and they don’t hold enough bedding. Bin cages and tanks are much easier. They’re easier to clean, gives you easier access to your pet, plus they are bigger than most of those wire cages. Some parts of those cages can be used if taken a part. I’ve used 5 inch wheels as hides since they’re too tiny to be used as an actual running wheels. The moldy food is definitely frustrating too, I like to keep an eye on my mice’s dishes to make sure each mouse is eating enough and nobody is trying to hog food.

Your amazing munchie without you giving amazing information I would've put my hamster in a tiny cage without knowing any different and your hair looks amazing, and my god those two little beauties you've rescued are so fricking adorable my heart has melted completely. And the reason why I would've kept my hamster in a to small of a cage is cause I have difficulty researching and reading due to disabilities I have but I'm so glad I'm able to give my hamster a good life in a 900 SQ inch enclosure.
As an adult with a hamster currently, I feel like my poor first hamster as a child was abused. I was a child, and my parents and I didn't know any better at the time, but I had my first Syrian hamster in an enclosure similar to the shorter/wider one for the better part of the first year I had her. I had to "upgrade" to a different wire cage because the ventilation was so poor that m poor girl started losing her hair. In hindsight, the "upgrade" was still way too small, but at least it had proper ventilation. I wish I had had a resource like you available when I was a kid! My current ham is living the dream because of you and other resources available.

Hey Munchie, we have been taking my hamster to the vet alot lately. They gave her more antibiotics that will hopefully help her but say she will probably be put down in a week. They found a random bump on her which they think may be cancer. Its made me really upset beacuse of how close i am to her. I dont see why people act like its not a big deal since its just a hamster. It is still a pet and part of the family, like a dog or cat. Anyway by the slim chance u read my story, I wanna thank you. For all that you do for the animals. You are their voice since they dont have one. Youve always been an inspiration and never stop being you.
The situation with these poor hamsters is horrible, I'm thinking of maybe getting one and doing some research on their care with watching this channel. If I don't get a hamster I'm thinking of getting a rabbit when my cat passes eventually, and I'm watching Lennon the bunny for info on them. Thank-you for your knowledge and willingness to share it.

In my exact situation I can guarantee the dog will be allowed in all housing and I’ll be here for at least 5 years (service dog). Rent increasing is the main reason I see and hear of unforeseen moved

Plastic needs to go for sure! The cages in the US seem very much like ours too in our pet stores, small plastic prisons in my opinion.
The Niteangel and the Rodi pet wood ones look really good and are flat packed surely a big company like Kaytee could do something similar. 👍

The dark one is the same I own. Mine is a campbell and winter white hybrid and looks exactly the same, even the white belly has the same amount of white 😅 We didn't know that she's a hybrid for a long time cause they told us she is a winter white.
Appreciate your passion for this subject. It shows. You make some really good points…but FWIW, I’ve been using a Critter Trail 3 Level (2nd gen) for more than 10 years for the various dwarfs I’ve cared for. Is it the best enclosure? Probably not. But it does the job and my hamsters through the years haven't seem to mind it. On plus side however, I do have a worked around…more on that in a second. Mine really don’t climb the bars (a good sign of no boredom I’m thinking??) and rarely have they fallen from the higher levels. It’s happened, but really only once or twice, and they were absolutely fine. Why this cage is a pretty cool addition is that’s just what it is…an addition. It rests atop of a fairly large, spacious storage bin accessed by a tube I inserted through a hole cut in the bin’s cover. So my little guys get the best of both worlds-a really large “basement” to run /play around in (plenty of toys in there too), and an airy, ‘tuby’ upward cage to explore further...oh with wheel to boot. In fact, my latest truly loves the detachable part up top. Just putting this out there.
I do not agree with your logic to keep using these enclosures when there is scientific studies on cage size and stress, and that this enclosure is vertical rather than horizontal. The only time vertical is used is when it's possible for a greater bedding depth, for instance 15 inches deep. I have had my fair share of rescued hamsters from vertical enclosures where they had neurological damage from falling and landing wrong. Vertical is not suitable or health wise, ideal for hamsters vs that of horizontal space. I also will not agree to keep them inside enclosures smaller than 450 sq inches and while the only cage that supports a bedding depth of 5 inches from Kaytee is the super crittertrail (for hamsters), the classics do not and only provide a height of 3 inches or less. This enclosure i will continue to preach, is not suitable for a small mammal, i do not agree it's a safe attachment enclosure and as you saw in the video and know probably first hand, that these enclosures are cheap plastic that easily break.
While it sounds like you have something larger, encase you do not since i cannot physically see or know what you have but you continue to use this as an attachment, please do your research and understand why companies like niteangel and savic are pushing for larger enclosures that're horizontal and why places like Germany have higher minimums as these hamsters travel 5-10 miles on average in the wild and pet laws are now finally involving smaller mammals around the world and do not supply in their market place, kaytee enclosures or accessories. The US absolutely sucks with the pet market, at least for US companies. Kaytee despite being a pet company, once only a feed store, does not have your hamsters best interest at heart and continues to make unsafe cages and accessories. Please seek out better care when possible and I welcome you to join FB hamster groups such as hamsters or hamster care/advice. Great community to help get people in the right direction.
We need this 2 decade long trend of plastic, tiny and neglectful enclosures from kaytee to end and to be a better model going forward in 2021. This is not appropriate to be housing our animals inside of. and its sad that hamsters were domesticated in the first place, as they truly don't thrive in this type of environment as they're highly stress prone creatures.

I do think the makers of these products really are thinking more of the owner than the animal...like the way "gourmet" dog food is pretty much marketed to make the owner feel better most likely than than dog ever would. That's why I incorporate the bin part. It's super large...more than enough horizontal run around room. But your earnest response is plenty of food for thought to be sure...so thanks for that.

When I first searched for hamsters, on TH-cam, I only got videos where the people were using the Kaytee type of cage. It didn't seem strange to me, as that was pretty much all that was available when I last had hamsters. If other people have the same type of luck, then they will be like me and think those cages are just fine. Fortunately, I started watching these videos long before I ever had any little critter that needed a cage. By the time I did get my hamster, I was getting decent videos so my little girl is in a 50-gallon bin and will be moving into a 50-gallon, long tank when she gets a little older.
Those cages are the same as they were when I was a child. I had my first hamster when I was 9 years old. I was born in 1981. So the cages haven't changed since the 1980 and 90's. I have a picture of my hamsters cages.

some of the small cages would be perfect for a transport cage. Don't throw them out. You could place a guitar handle on the top for easier carrying.
The small cages I keep for this reason, to travel with. HOWEVER NEVER and I say NEVER travel with a vertical enclosure with too high of bars. Falling from big heights has caused so many injuries of hamsters we've taken in. They are best to be thrown out and parts kept, to make safer smaller ones with horizontal length and smaller height, if using cages as transport. We are switching to using only 10 gallon tanks now to make it easier on us for transporting gerbils and hamsters since these plastic cages break so easily on us now.
my Syrian Jack has a great wheel (Savic giant rolly I think?) but he pees on it so much that I need to clean it out every couple days.
he also has the habit of placing pieces of food on it so that when he runs it makes a loud rattle sound. he's a funny little fella
Since a cage upgrade he's stopped peeing on the wheel. Now he uses his sandbath as a litter box and I'm not complaining because it's easy to clean =D
A part of me knew at one point that both my gerbils and hamster needed more but what could I do at 12-13 years old??? I didn't like seeing them under stress and the only reason I agreed to rehome my 2nd hamster was because I was in a abusive household and I couldn't provide either food or bedding to her. She knocked over that cage 3 times trying to get out and eventually lost the remaining bedding she had. She was surviving off of treats for food and sleeping on a barred floor. I wouldn't take her out because she would be mistreated and I didn't want her being attacked by the other animals living there. Due to experiences I've had I hate untrained and or aggressive big dogs and I'm very protective of defenseless animals.
I am very late to comment, but I am actually very impressed with KayTee's new cages for rabbits and guinea pigs. They are called "Open Living" just look up kaytee open living and watch the ad. They even addressed the fact that guinea pigs are social and that you should free roam your rabbit. I shit you not, I cried when I watched the ad for the first time because I never thought that there would be an appropriate cage line from a "pet store" brand. Its really awesome and the cages are huge. I hope they take it a step further and make new hamster cages too!
I saw one of these at my local Petco. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM Wonder if i need to review this and to rescue some Guinea pigs so i can properly review it. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.
Side note: Butters and Rumble the first fostered Guinea's at the rescue were surrendered by a friend. So our rescue doesn't actively take them in. But will consider it if we have enough room.
Just looking at the drop in those cages scare me.
What depresses me a lot about these enclosures is that they have cool ideas, I love the idea of a tube and look out! My Syrian loves to perch and survey his territory. But it looks so... Claustrophobic, and it's unsafe to boot.
I live in Canada, and Niteangel stuff is something I really want, but it's really hard to even find it for sale!
aww very cute little dwarf hamsters, one looks like my first hamster called ivan, he only liked me Munchie, anyone else tried to pet him he would try to bite them

got my hamster today, the pet store we got his cage and set up from was mainly really good care and products, but they were selling hamster balls and l i t e r a l l y 2 to 4 inch wheels and i was so so disappointed, especially because they were almost sold out

The black one definitely has a winter white face and body. But black like campbells. They are both most likely hybrids.
When I was really really young my grandma bought me and my brother hamsters. The pet store worker said that they could be housed together so of course it was two Campbells inside of a tiny 1 level crittertrails starter kit 😭 needless to say I found out hamsters can commit cannibalism.
I finally got through to my family- we got a bin cage for one of our hamsters (unfortunately the other has yet to get one but cross our fingers that we will get one soon) it only costs 10 bucks for a decent bin cage because we have everything else needed to make a decent enclosure (I got small things and built it up, so we just need the bin and mesh) we are taking steps in the right direction to provide better lives for the small animals we have. Also I refuse to let my family use wood bedding because it is just easier rather than remembering what wood beddings are bad. I also scolded my sisters for even THINKING about housing the hamsters in the same enclosure.

I'm 14, I've been researching hamsters since April 2020, I got my hamster last May, May 7th to be exact, I find it sad when people so much older than me can impulsively and irresponsibly get pets without doing research. (I have a 5x2x2 enclosure for my syrian)
