I almost actually bought one, and a tiny tales cage. BUT then I THANKFULLY found your channel. THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for educating me on the horror story of what these cages do BEFORE I traumatized a poor animal. I feel horrible for even THINKING that was a good idea after watching. If Tiny Tales wants to make themed cages so bad why don't they just make themed enrichments and sell a standard appropriate sized cage? Like how cute would it be if they had dinosaur bone themed chews, and dinosaur shaped hides and toys for hamsters? It would probably coast less since they can just replace the themed enrichment items depending on the theme of the set.
And they'd likely make more profit, as there wouldn't be bad cage reviews deterring people from buying, so the company would do better overall, if they just ditch the cages and do themed accessories.

I can tell this is a deathtrap just by glancing at it Fun fact for people, temporary tattoos adhere to plastic pretty well, if you get your kid a cage get a tub one and cover the exterior in temporary tats. they stay on like 4-5 washes at least if i remember right and you can get things from any shows you like nowadays :) it's also a ton cheaper, we did this when i was a kid and had mice...
I want to thank you munchie I've been working at petco for about a year now, and while I already had knowledge for cats, dogs, and recently reptiles, I ended up watching your channel on a whim, and it honestly really helped out when a customer was buying a hamster for their 14 year old daughter. I gave them some of your advice and let them know that the Kaytees arent a very good cage and why, they got a bigger wheel to go with the cage till they upgrade, and even recommend the super trail and the prevue. I'm glad I found your channel and I want to thank you for your help. While I understand the issues with locations like petco and petsmart and our animals I still try to give people as much beneficial information as possible to help them and their pets... and since the hamster I got before had been in a kaytee I always stress how much of a pain in the ass the cleaning is 🤦♀️

Munchie, I'm so grateful you make these videos! I love hamsters and have always wanted to own or foster them. However, last week I accidentally found myself rescuing a baby field mouse, who has similar needs to pet mice. Thanks to your informative videos (that I binged somewhere 2 weeks ago) I know a lot about keeping mice, their enclosures, and what they'd like to play with. I built him some vertical space with rope and ladders, only approach him from the side, and forage-feed him instead of putting his food in a bowl. Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, please keep this up, I love your videos and they've helped me be a better mouse mum.
When ever I write i comment on your channel, it ends up being an angry/frustrated one because people are making me go crazy... but I will write a good comment this time and say: I loved your intro!! and yeah, what can I say about the toy? Overprised... oh wait, it's a cage? *dies inside*
So I had a hedgehog, Bowser, over a decade ago, but watching this has me shaking my head. Before we got him we did a ton of research and knew cage size recommendations (honestly it was the easiest info about them to find, just a quick google search lead us to people passionate about hedgehog care). He was in a >4 square foot (>615 square inches) clear plastic storage box (no lid the sides were almost 2 feet) for his first few years. To make it fun, we would decorate his box with dry erase markers/window markers and tempura paint (when he wasn’t in there so not to disturb him) and had fun hides and liners. We drew things like castles (and even made the top of his tall hide, which he couldn’t get to, look like a castle) and characters. This “cage” was so cheap (about $25CAD) which left us with plenty of money to spend on decorative yet functional decor, hides, snacks and bedding plus multiple wheels! When I got my guinea pigs a few years later, I did the same thing, though I found a massive cage second hand for very cheap after researching cage requirements. I made it “fun/decorative” for me without compromising my pets safety or quality of life in a similar way (with fleece, external decoration, and decorative functional accessories. We’d also make little caged in “obstacle” courses/mazes for them with (small/short) boxes and cardboard “ramps” or stairs sticky tacked to the floor covered in a fleece blanket, with treats and hides and hay bedding for play time. Admittedly, I’ve never had a hamster, though, these companies could make much more money by selling external cage decor, fleeces, hides, many different colours and patterns on wheels and bowls ect. They already have all those stickers they provide with these “cages” 😂. I’ve got to think that selling a regular rectangular style cage has got to be cheaper and easier for companies to make than these “engendering fails” that they market as “cages”. They’d be better off marketing these “toy cages” as like a fun additional play structure (once they address safety concerns) where you can interact with your hamster and they can get extra enrichment outside of their appropriately sized cage. I don’t think I’ve ever bought a cage from any of these companies. I’ve always found them second hand because I was disgusted at the price point of these cages for the quality of build and size of the cages! (I know there’s better options now, but being in Canada and owning small pets almost a decade ago did not make it easy to source and ship cages, and I was able to find alternative locally anyway).
I don't own hamsters and never plan too, but I freaking love people that are passionate about animals like this. Thank you for your amazing work. Also on an unrelated note: I know you've mentioned before that saucer wheels weren't ideal for hamsters. That being said if anyone has saucer wheels they wish to get rid of, hand them to hermit crab owners. They will thank you immensely. XD
Just looking at the layout and design of that monstrosity makes my brain hurt. But if you stuff a poor hamster in this “cage” then you deserve to have to clean this hot mess often.
Munchie- this is not about the video, but I NEED YOUR HELP. Today my hamster came out of his burrow to get some water, and there was a cut in the side of his cheek. It was not bleeding, just red and the fur from that area was gone. Otherwise Kit Kat (that’s my hamsters name) seems to be acting alright. Do I need to bring him to a vet? Thank you for everything you do.
I know your comment is not directed to me, but is it worth calling or emailing your vet, and sending them a picture, so you can ask what they suggest to help? That's what I'm doing for my cat, as he is missing fur on his neck and there looks to be blood. I hope your hammy will be ok!
Something I want to point out is if you have gerbils getting a clear tank cage is so much more fun even for kids! You can see all their tunnels and getting them out to play is easier, I used to love seeing where all thier tunnels went and i buiried things under the same for them to find, and I would be more motivated to clean them out to see where their next tunnels were!
Where I live hamsters are commonly bought at markets. Where they are sold for 1-2$ and there are cages sold nearby which are travel carrier sized and around 30-40 sq inches. Its very sad.

staraptor cats Pet stores advertise the cages to people that don’t know better and impulse buy the hamsters because they’re cute. The hamster is just the hook, the cage is the “product”.

It’s obvious this is targeted towards kids. So, they will harass their parents for it. Then, the parents give in. Just stop it, PetSmart. Do better.
It’s not cute, trying to profit off of something that isn’t event suitable for the pet you are targeting with this stuff. I just feel bad for hamsters and all the false propaganda and misinformation spread about them. They deserve better.

I saw this in petsmart and immediately came to see if you had made a video on this nonsense. You didn't disappoint! Awesome content, I've shared your channel with so many people who wanted hamsters and they were so grateful, they were seriously considering those stupid small cages and didn't know you could be recommended something wildly inappropriate by the pet store. People are too trusting that the stores care about your animal when all they really care about is the $$$.
This is honestly disturbing. The plastic sounds so cheap! I went to Petsmart the other day and happened to notice that the hamster aisle was filled with tiny jails- I mean tiny tales enclosures right as you went in it. 🙄 What a giant piece of fossilised dinosaur dookie.
Yeah same and the only acceptable cages were for reptiles and there was one non tank acceptable cage

Munchie, I'm so grateful you make these videos! I love hamsters and have always wanted to own or foster them. However, last week I accidentally found myself rescuing a baby field mouse, who has similar needs to pet mice. Thanks to your informative videos (that I binged somewhere 2 weeks ago) I know a lot about keeping mice, their enclosures, and what they'd like to play with. I built him some vertical space with rope and ladders, only approach him from the side, and forage-feed him instead of putting his food in a bowl.
Anyways, what I'm trying to say is, please keep this up, I love your videos and they've helped me be a better mouse mum.

How on earth do you clean it??
So I had a hedgehog, Bowser, over a decade ago, but watching this has me shaking my head. Before we got him we did a ton of research and knew cage size recommendations (honestly it was the easiest info about them to find, just a quick google search lead us to people passionate about hedgehog care). He was in a >4 square foot (>615 square inches) clear plastic storage box (no lid the sides were almost 2 feet) for his first few years. To make it fun, we would decorate his box with dry erase markers/window markers and tempura paint (when he wasn’t in there so not to disturb him) and had fun hides and liners. We drew things like castles (and even made the top of his tall hide, which he couldn’t get to, look like a castle) and characters.
This “cage” was so cheap (about $25CAD) which left us with plenty of money to spend on decorative yet functional decor, hides, snacks and bedding plus multiple wheels!
When I got my guinea pigs a few years later, I did the same thing, though I found a massive cage second hand for very cheap after researching cage requirements. I made it “fun/decorative” for me without compromising my pets safety or quality of life in a similar way (with fleece, external decoration, and decorative functional accessories. We’d also make little caged in “obstacle” courses/mazes for them with (small/short) boxes and cardboard “ramps” or stairs sticky tacked to the floor covered in a fleece blanket, with treats and hides and hay bedding for play time.
Admittedly, I’ve never had a hamster, though, these companies could make much more money by selling external cage decor, fleeces, hides, many different colours and patterns on wheels and bowls ect. They already have all those stickers they provide with these “cages” 😂. I’ve got to think that selling a regular rectangular style cage has got to be cheaper and easier for companies to make than these “engendering fails” that they market as “cages”. They’d be better off marketing these “toy cages” as like a fun additional play structure (once they address safety concerns) where you can interact with your hamster and they can get extra enrichment outside of their appropriately sized cage.
I don’t think I’ve ever bought a cage from any of these companies. I’ve always found them second hand because I was disgusted at the price point of these cages for the quality of build and size of the cages! (I know there’s better options now, but being in Canada and owning small pets almost a decade ago did not make it easy to source and ship cages, and I was able to find alternative locally anyway).
This is like living in a McDonald’s play place.
Hey munchie! Just a random thought, is regular silicone safe for hamsters or do I need to get aquarium silicone for my wooden cage?
100% silicone is safe. If it contains anything else inside of it, i'd avoid and use aquarium silicone which can be found online and in petstores.

Also on an unrelated note: I know you've mentioned before that saucer wheels weren't ideal for hamsters. That being said if anyone has saucer wheels they wish to get rid of, hand them to hermit crab owners. They will thank you immensely. XD

Munchie- this is not about the video, but I NEED YOUR HELP. Today my hamster came out of his burrow to get some water, and there was a cut in the side of his cheek. It was not bleeding, just red and the fur from that area was gone. Otherwise Kit Kat (that’s my hamsters name) seems to be acting alright. Do I need to bring him to a vet? Thank you for everything you do.
I know your comment is not directed to me, but is it worth calling or emailing your vet, and sending them a picture, so you can ask what they suggest to help? That's what I'm doing for my cat, as he is missing fur on his neck and there looks to be blood. I hope your hammy will be ok!

Something I want to point out is if you have gerbils getting a clear tank cage is so much more fun even for kids! You can see all their tunnels and getting them out to play is easier, I used to love seeing where all thier tunnels went and i buiried things under the same for them to find, and I would be more motivated to clean them out to see where their next tunnels were!
Where I live hamsters are commonly bought at markets. Where they are sold for 1-2$ and there are cages sold nearby which are travel carrier sized and around 30-40 sq inches. Its very sad.
