Thank you very much Mandar. Ooh, a Lion, now that's an excellent challenge for you. Why not test out on some scrap watercolour paper using some fine lined masking fluid to reserve some hairs. You can even add the masking fluid over the top of paint as well, but remember to test any ideas out first. Paul 🎨
Which of these fur painting techniques will you be using in your watercolour paintings? Do you use any others? Let me know in a comment below. And don't forget to check out my video on a VERY furry Raccoon too: th-cam.com/video/9JHZzCL-5HI/w-d-xo.html
Great tutorial. Just found you last night. Trying to learn watercolour realistic painting and hoping to be able to paint my pet dogs. :) Thanks for sharing these tips. Quite helpful.
Paul
Hi Kristine, yes that is my home-made brush I call 'The Replicator'. LOL I have a number videos on here where I do mention it, but here is quite an old one where I show how I made one of these peculiar and rough (but effective) looking brushes. Paul 🎨 tinyurl.com/bdfm7n65
Hi! I'm in the middle of painting a mother grizzly doing a little fishing to feed her cubs in the background. I'm trying to keep the bears from clashing into the forest background. I'm very new to watercolors after doing acrylics for many years.
Hi Rhonda, what a lovely project to be working on! As long as you keep the background less defined and to a duller, cooler feel, the bears should come forward a little more. Enjoy the process, Paul 🎨
Hi TBM, the reference photo and the outline drawing is available with the full real-time video tutorial for this lovely Bear Cub on my website. All my monthly or annual members have access to this and over 100 other video lessons. devonartist.co.uk/memberships/ This is just a tutorial on painting fur tips. :-)
Age shouldn't be a barrier Gayle. I have a list of all the materials I use on my website if it helps. As you have found out, you don't need a lot of equipment, but good reliable (not too expensive) brushes are a must. Here is my website link for you: devonartist.co.uk/materials-i-use-or-recommend-for-realistic-watercolour/
Hi Heather, sadly I don't know the stockists where you are. If you have a look at my product's page, it will give you some ideas on the items you need to search for over cross the water there. devonartist.co.uk/materials-i-use-or-recommend-for-realistic-watercolour/ I'm guessing the Winsor & Newton size 00 brushes should at least be available where you are. Hope this helps, Paul 🎨
LOL Merci, Paul bit.ly/2HKTDAv
Hi Tanja, the brush size is a size 00 which I prefer to use. Here is an affiliate link for you for the brand of brush i use for my detail work. bit.ly/2KiM1Gj If you go to the bottom of the list you will find the size 00, for some reason they seem to start at 0 at the top which is perculiar! LOL Thank you for watching, Paul :-)
Yes it is, this is one I may have bought around 25+ years ago. I think it is a Daler Rowney Spectrum, difficult to say really as the writing has worn off it now. 🤓
@@tanjagusetti7423 Hi Tanja, yes this is the same kind of thing. I made my own version of a rake brush though, just out of an old brush destined for the bin. Take a look at another video I have on here using my 'replicator' brush. Paul ;-) bit.ly/2UOETDS
As a guess I would say four layers, starting with a background wash, then light, mid and dark layer tones for the details. Time wise, hard to say, but I would place it around the 15 hours mark. 😊
@@EKS49 No, that's for the whole painting. Many of my more complex paintings take 15-20 hours on average, after all, we should never rush a painting. 😃
