- Sandro Russo plays the Scriabin Etude in D-sharp minor op. 8 no. 12 on the legendary Steinway & Sons "CD-75", serial # 156975, prepared by Tali Mahanor. HD upload.
This is the piano Vladimir Horowitz played in the 80s for his recitals at the Met ("Horowitz at the Met"), Royal Festival Hall ("Horowitz in London"), and in Japan..
The complete DVD "Sandro Russo Plays the Steinway CD-75 Horowitz Piano" will be released later in spring; stay tuned for news and updates!

I’m late, but there is something about that piano. Specifically the amazing tone of those bass notes. But all the sound, it’s like the piano is in complete agony and just screaming. It’s incredible, as was the performances on it
It is a steinway. Refurbished It's probably still worth more than your car an for a reason.
Either the piano is magic or the pianist is a genius.

Both.
I played on this piano when Horowitz' widow did send it around the world in the late eighties. In Amsterdam it landed with Ypma pianos and I had to make a reservation for half an hour. I did play Chopin's étude Op. 25 nbr. 1 several times. The piano was playing very light, as Horowitz had the keys regulated on 44 grams. Indeed the bass notes on this piano are amazing and sounded the same as in a Horowitz rendition. In this étude from Scriabin, Mr. Russo could really use these bass notes.
I come here every month and re-listen to this masterpiece performance.
It has all the advantages of Horowitz and Sultanov performance.
I like that Sultanov is not the only one who plays the middle voice in the middle.
... and I love the way you replicate the Horowitzian bottom B flat at 1:58 ;)
Martin Paton amazing
This is a tremendous interpretation, i've listen so many pianist play it (with horowitz and sofronitsky of course) and it's clearly one of the best.
That bass........
Just check 1:07
Now I know the reason why Horowitz selected this piano for most of his tours.
one of the most beautiful etudes, an immaculate performance and feel. your tenacity and care for the keys is evident in the sound. the Steinway suits you incredibly well.
Amazing, this is probably one of the best interpretations of this piece.
This interpretation gave me chills 0__0
1:20 this little breath you took here sold the entire interpretation. Well considered. Absolutely perfect restraint mixed with chaos. Virtuosic.
@xistr
... Franz Mohr, Horowitz's concert tune, discusses CD-75 and how Horowitz came to know and love this piano is his book, "My Life with the Great Pianists". The piano is shortly to come to stay at Lincoln Center. -Tali
@xistr
...This piano was used through the early 1980's and was the instrument he played and recorded in London. As well, he played this piano at the Met twice. I was there for both concerts. He played his first concert in Tokyo on CD-75 and he played the piano all through touring the USA in that era. (it continues...)
Wow, one of the best interpretations of this piece I've ever heard. Dear Sandro, you are playing this etude with such an overwhelming passion! The middle part is just mindblowing! And what a fire in the repeating third part! The whole development of the central line is extremely colourful and convincing. And everything is due to a mature and talented musician, not only a pianist. Sure, the grand piano is perfect too, but it's the pianist who makes it sound in that emotional way. You should take a piano as a fate without being choosy and manage to show the composer's internal world through your own soul despite the various qualities of a piano. The revival of the piece is mostly up to a musician. The instrument is just a supporting medium. I think so. Bravo Maestro!!!
Brought out some very unique voices in the middle section and the dynamic range you present is brilliant :) easily one of my favorite recordings of this Etude!
Woooww ... I really like your interpretation
Great pianist, thanks for uploading this wonderful rendition.
Sandro,
What an amazing opportunity to record on Horowitz's piano!!! I really enjoyed the extreme HD sound and video. For your performance, I think this is one of my favorites now. I really like how you played the middle section and brought out some of the inner voices =)
Soooooo awesome. Bravo!
Beautiful job!!!
This is the most incredible interpretation I have ever heard, wow. I can't believe I am saying this, but I actually prefer it to Horowitz's. Jeez, I don't think I've ever thought that about a Scriabin piece. I'm blown away. Does this talented pianist have any albums?
Thank you for your flattering remarks. You can view some of Mr. Russo's recordings on his website "sandrorussopianist (dot) com" An all-Rachmaninoff album of his will be out soon on the Steinway label.
Thank you for the information! Here's to hoping he does an all Scriabin album as well :)
Excellent video! Very amazing!!
That incredible video!
Dear Sandro,
This is forever my favourite...........
Beautiful!
This is the piano sound what we need for this etude ! Amazing interprétation 👍😃
just amazing and beautiful!
Das ist ganz stark gespielt, einfach
eine super Aufnahme, wunderbar
Wonderful, as always. Your interpretation is up there with that of Horowitz himself!
There are other youtube videos that claim to feature Horowitz’s piano but this REALLY sounds like his piano especially in the bass register
because it is mate!!!
I Love it !

A melhor interpretação desse estudo que já ouvi. Técnica perfeita. Interpretação mais que perfeita. Difícil alguém tornar um estudo passional realmente cheio de paixão, mas esse pianista conseguiu. Bravo!!!!
Well done Russo, you have won my respect and awe! Such passion and melody, not rushed or poorly executed but clean and visceral!!
Sandro is a masterful pianist!
Still the best interpretation ever of this piece
Marvellous!!
Fantastic playing
C’est comme si c’était horowitz qui jouait, interprétation de référence ❤

Bravoooo 👏👏👏
On the edge of my seat!
That must have been a great great dream to play that piece on the Horowitz piano, as a tribute to VH! Wow...... Bravoo!!!!!!!
I tried the horowitz piano. I love the loud bass, suits this peice perfectly too!
Very nice.
sublime
Glorious
fantasic !
Bravo! Da un altro pianista😊
Top tier reading. I don't know what else there is to say.
That was a very nice performance.
Stupendo
Dude, so fucking good.
great
Oh my God!!! Skryabin... Tragedy... Storm... BRAVO!
Best interpretation available online
Ah... most excellent.
Magnificent performace of this so romantic Scriabin etude. I just love the music of the great Rujssian romantics - Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov and especially Scriabin . A great solace
to listen to such music in a world gone "mad".

NICE! lol i love how his hands are so harry.
I love your hands
@ReturnOfTheStienway
first time I heard this one, and I share your vision :)
Wow...similar to Horowitz but with its own identity also...Bravo!!!
@xistr Here is a message from the owner of this piano. It's in two parts because of its length.
Dear xistr,
While you are correct in that Horowitz never owned CD-75, you are incorrect in that this instrument was not in Horowitz's home. In fact, I am the current owner and I have a letter from the Steinway & Sons Concert Department indicating that it was craned in and out of his East 94th Street home twice. (it continues...)
You can hear Rachmaninov's influence, after all the two were friends and played with such feeling... expresses the restless soul.
If anything Scriabin influenced Rachmaninoff and not the other way around
@@brucedavies8084 They were friends, it goes both ways
wow what a treasure, i like this interpretation as is really "pathetic"
I can't believe this song got nearly no attention in Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso (Your Lie in April). It definitely deserves it's own scene, like Chopin's Etude Op. 10 No. 4 did (among others).
Same here!
Please stop
Very similar to Horowitz effort in the live recording (Can't remember the year), but I suspect that was deliberate!
@TheRedArmy10 I have heard almost every recording commercial and non-commercial.

Great playing. Where is that piano located?
Much better than Horowitz. Just perfect!!!!!!
Has his piano been restored at all ? I mean it has been played by horowitz himself probably daily when he was alive and it doesnt seem to want to quit! its like in perfect shape! how is this?
Sehr schön!!! Wann kommt Sandro Russo nach Deutschland
There is nothing to be said about this piece after Horowitz' performances... even though this is good performance.
Do you know what piano Mr Horowitz used in the 1968 concert?
А так отлично сыграно,а уж кто как исполняет это дело каждого)
Horowitz's Piano. Not Horowitz in style (who can be?). But a very good performer.
listen properly, this is an incredible interpretation

Se eu não estivesse vendo, falaria q era o Horowitz, um pouco mais suave e sem exageros.
