Vladimir Horowitz piano - Steinway CD-503 - trying out the instrument!

  • I had the pleasure of trying out this legendary instrument, in Steinway Hall, NYC.
    To answer a few of your questions - this piano was rebuilt after Horowitz died in 1989 and the custom light action was taken out and replaced with a standard one.
    The way it is voiced now - it is very bright but the middle register is by far the loudest - with somewhat subdued bass and treble registers. I found it more suited to a more percussive approach, there is a great deal of “articulation” and limited capability to produce a real pianissimo.
    It was a very interesting experience!

    “Early in 1934, Steinway & Sons presented Horowitz and his wife Wanda with a Steinway Model D, Serial #279503, as a wedding present. In the early 1940’s, this piano was replaced with #314503, now known simply as CD 503. This is the piano Horowitz kept in his New York townhouse. It was known to be one of the legendary concert pianist’s favorite instruments, and he used it in many recitals and recordings in the 70’s and 80’s. He would always insist that this piano be his exclusive touring instrument, and he required that it be craned out of his Manhattan apartment and delivered to the concert venue regardless of distance or cost. He used it on his famous Moscow concert in 1986”

    Why on eath would they remove the original action - the very thing which would make the piano interesting to a player. Bod Glazebrook, the former head of Steinway in London, told me that the action was so light the hammers hardly fell back!

    Remember Horowitz used the left (soft) pedal ALOT....and you don't....in the off position it is voiced for the maximum he wanted. (I guess). I played it on one of the first tours and the hammers were new and dull. It didn't sound like Horowitz' piano at all and the action had been changed. As a touring piano it is not kept in tip top voicing like it was. The ship it store to store all over the place. How did you like the keytops?

    • @MichaelKaykov
      @MichaelKaykov  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The keytops were plastic, not ivory like on the original. The una corda effect also not the sonority we all remember, they really rebuilt the piano.
      Still, fun to try out!

      Una Corda from :45 on, strangely ineffective 😂

      @@MichaelKaykovth-cam.com/video/FxhbAGwEYGQ/w-d-xo.html Do you ever compare your body position with his, your hand positions, the angle of elbow to piano key bottom,etc....might be revealling to try to put your body into his body position and feel and experience what he was doing. Too many pianists today sit too high ...even very high....which is only needed if you're short or very short. You may find that sitting lower and more back w/elbows lower will change your sound in a positive way. Think orchestrally and like bel canto. Horowitz studied the recording of Battistini, why don't you do that? All those old singers had something you won't hear today. Rubinstein was particuarly enamored of Besanzoni. No doubt the exposure to truly well trained great singers influenced the instrdumentalists of the past, including Chopin. I hope you get what you're after.

      oh yes, I used to sit quite low at the piano, but I much prefer a more level seating position now. There will never be another Horowitz and I think it is fruitless to try and imitate his most "ripe" recordings. If anything, the 1930's recordings should be studied and perhaps used as a reference as they contain no "mannerisms".
      My favorite pianists at the moment are Moiseiwitsch and Friedman...

    Thanks for this great video ! If they completely rebuilt it, this is not the Horowitz Steinway any more. (only by the opus number ) Sad....

    Very interesting video Michael! Thanks for sharing :)) I wonder why they changed so many things of the piano.. deletes the purpose of being Horowitz piano.. very sad in my opinion. Best wishes!
