    The Bills better be glad Josh Allen turned out as good as he did otherwise they'd never hear the end of letting the Chiefs move up to take Mahomes. They'd get it worse than the Bears for picking Trubisky.

      It's more than that.
      Terry Pegula wanted Mahomes. It was Sean McDermott (Beane wasn't there yet, Doug Whaley was fired the day after the 2017 draft finished) who decided to make the trade for Tre White, Dion Dawkins and what turned into Tremaine Edmunds.
      McDermott bet his entire career on that draft.

    Dorsey gets the credit for drafting Mahomes, but it was Veach who was all in on him and his history with Reid was enough to put Mahomes on KC's board and incentivize the strategy to move up to get him. GM's get the credit, but it is a collaborative effort between coaches, their pro scouts and the front office (and all too often clueless owners). That said, witout a doubt, this is a crucial draft for Veach and the Chiefs - select right, and they are stocked up for the next five years while maintaining a viable cap.

    You gotta understand how perfect the situation was for the Chiefs and Mahomes. He was raw potential. He needed an incubation year. GMs almost universally enjoyed watching Mahomes film and marveled at his talent, but none of them had the balls to take a risk on him. And very few GMs and coaching staffs had the trust of their ownership and fanbase, AND still needed a QB.

    • @mikeyoung9810
      @mikeyoung9810 ปีที่แล้ว

      It wasn't balls that were needed since he was rated as the #3 best QB in the draft but instead it's the desire to get him otherwise I imagine someone would have selected him in the 1st round. The main risk was wasting your 1st round pick on a QB, especially with the Chief's past history in drafting QB's.

      No during this time, there was much hesitation about selecting a blk qb. Particularly one that was seen as a dual threat, improviser, scrambler, or who made plays outside the pocket. It seems crazy today because those are traits that rams now LOOK for in a qb. But it was the success of hurts, Watson, Lamar, mahomes etc that made that happen.

      Wrong. He was one of the most talented QBs in college history able to throw DARTS to the opposite side of the field when running in opposite direction. As long as he had receivers to get open, he would ALWAYS be successful. That’s like saying Tom Brady wouldn’t be who he is today without the patriots. He would still be great. If you give a good qb competent receivers and a line that can at least keep them somewhat clean, they will be successful

    The QB position above all others comes down to interviews.
    You need to see who's got the desire to grind the film room - Mahomes did, Deshaun didn't.
    Who has grit?
    Who have unquenchable thirst to improve?
    Capacity to learn?
    Can't get that on film.
    Seems to me that Andy "leaked" the playbook to Mahomes before their meeting and Mahomes turned up knowing all the answers to the test. That probably sealed the deal.

    I wonder, and am mostly skeptical if the chiefs organization really saw mahomes panning out as good as he has.. im sure the saw something in him but did they REALLY think he would be this good? I'm a life long chiefs fan and I truly love the Reid Era and how it has all come together I just have my doubts that ANYONE really expected the level of play/competitiveness that we got.. personally I think it was a perfect storm of personel, coaching, freedom to experiment (due to reids success and where we were as an organization before he came)and a true testament to what can happen for a qb given the right environment. so many far better talents have fallen short it seems because of bad team management, cap limits player development, personel, expectations to start right away and impatientence to allow the development..rg3, Vince Young, Stafford, trubisky and many more never really got the right situations and were forced into bad careers. I'm glad we had the time and ability to give mahomes a fighting chance and I think it has made the difference. It just goes to show the product on the field is a direct result of the work/planning that goes on in the head offices

      they saw him better than alex smith and that's really all that mattered
      he becoming mvp etc. is a lot more than they wanted and expected im sure
      but i bet reid knew mahomes would be the one to win him a ring as head coach finally

    • @Eggemeyers
      @Eggemeyers ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Of course they didn't see him panning out to be THIS good. If they had, they would've traded their entire draft to skip ahead of the Bears (just to be safe). But they saw him as being good enough to trade the next years first rounder for him too. Nobody could've envisioned Mahomes having the greatest start to a career for any QB in NFL history. But that doesn't take away from the Chiefs assessment that he was their guy and worth trading up for.

    Bills, Bengals and Chargers eventually got their superstar QBs (Allen, Burrow and Herbert). Pathetic Browns, of course, overpaid for their massage king (who sucked last year), Jags eventually got their guy with Lawrence. Niners failed miserably with Lance but got lucky with Purdy--and would be smart to lure Tom Brady for 2 years. Titans made the mistake of Corey Davis and still don't have a superstar qb. And the Bears finally got their guy who should become a superstar in Justin Fields. So it all worked out for the most part for the teams who missed out on Mahomes (except for the pathetic Browns--and the Bears need to build around Fields)

      You lose like that by being the pre 2018 Chiefs, that's how. That garbage timeframe from 1994 to 2017 makes the last 4 years so much sweeter to me.
