    Such an interesting guest ... I really think Music For The Masses was their first serious album, which obviously started the greatest period of their work ... I'll never forget the first time I played it ... Was an original Vinyl record prob 6 years ago (Australian pressing) ... The way the instruments came in on Never Let Me Down, it really heralded something for me, it was very spacey and evocative, vocals magnificent, I loved these inaudible Gahan backing vocals as the song crescendos ... Its a great symphonic work. Thanks for the interview..

    I totally understand what Dave is saying about the little crack that you can hear in a sound, at a potentiometer... I remember one studio session where we had a sound that came out of nowhere ("we never created that? what instrument does this whistling come from?? it sounds good!!" ..but it was impossible to reproduce it: in fact it was the cleaning lady upstairs who had vacuumed and caused a slight overload at the same time as the boiler starting: it sounded so good that we kept it). That's what makes the essence of the mix: it's ORGANIC and you have to keep it random, natural: you can't control everything.
    Oh god, I envy Dave for being able to make a career out of it and work with so many cult groups.

    Fabulous ! I love it Vaughn!! MFTM was a very organic sounding album with a much more vast array of layers. Hearing it on vinyl really offers the experience in an almost 4 dimension way. This was quite a pleasure thank you again!!!

    Great interview Vaughn! Bascombe was the first person to help change the sonic profile of DM into a more elevated sound. MFTM is a wonderful album! Dave Bascombe isn't interviewed often, kudos to you and your team for opening the door into Bascombe's world. Continuing on from Gareth Jones' great work, DM needed a new direction, and DB was a great selection for that project (MFTM)...especially for the late 80s. Any chance you can interview Flood next? that would be terrific!! All best wishes from the USA!!

    5:35 I went for a Job in London’s Turnkey - Charing Cross Road in about 2000ish, if that’s the same company.
    Amazing place I shopped there all the time and I also bought my Yamaha SY85 from them.

    Bloody great interview Vaughn (again), Dave's such a disarmingly down to earth interviewee with a refreshingly open opinion of new and old technology!
    Interested you used to work for Turnkey, Vaughn. I used to work for Sound Control (who bought TK in the early 2000s) and around that time became the high-tech buyer for SC. Alex Marten became my boss when he moved from TK to Scotland. Quite a difficult guy to like.

    So, Dave is the same age as Alan!! When DM announced that they hired a producer who worked with TFT, etc, I always imagined that Dave would be much older person who'd told them what to do, etc and I was worried that DM's next album could be 'too safe and ordinary pop songs made for top 10 chart'. I was so glad I was wrong. Dave seems to be a lovely guy to work with. (I also noticed that his speakers are facing towards driveway, away from his main house and neighbours. I bet his wife told him.)

  • @Nephilim-81
    @Nephilim-81 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    What I can say is that having an original cd sound recording of Music for the masses. It is definitely better than the 2006 remaster because none of the dynamics and loudness war standards crap has leeched into it. Bascombe did so well with Tears for Fears Songs from the big chair, which sounds better than 99% of the music that comes out today (fidelity wise.) Sadly in the age of steaming and downloading most people really don’t know the damn difference. And the music business trying to champion vinyl as the ultimate fidelity medium is another story. :(
    Anyhow at least my pals Vaughn and Dave get what is going on. *insert Fletch clap 👏 *

    I will happily suffer to get a centimetre closer to the Mode...many won't!!
    Still...it shows your bona fides and tek grounding...I will persevere...hopefully Depeche will emerge in the next part more than 0.000001%!!!

  • @autecheee
    @autecheee 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    LOL!! Dave likes GarageBand for on the fly ideas which does the job for me and many alike tinkling and tweaking about with amazing iOS synth and plugin apps. It doesn’t mean I’m/it’s creating quality music ...compared to the talent and practiced skill in sound crafting, sculpting, good chord selection and progression, lead lines, Hooks, beat programming, lyrics, vocal stylizing and composing that goes into making a ‘song’ or a composed instrumental....which Depeche did in the 80’s

  • @philnugent6971
    @philnugent6971 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I'm a huge fan of Depeche, they are brilliant live.. I wish at times they'd go back to basics, drum machine and synths. I'm sick of the drummer Christian, bring back Alan for a final World tour!!!

    Interesting about noticing singers out of tune. It's also only recently for me that I've noticed that Dave and Martin strayed a bit in those old records. It's actually quite refreshing though compared to the fake perfection of today.
