It was for a competition for the hunger games soundtrack, a very prestigious competition that musicians like Patti Smith and bands like Coldplay and Arcade fire competed in. As all the songs entered had to chime with the themes of the hunger games, the line about Jesus and Buddha simply wouldn't have fitted in. She was not 'pussying out' but making a mature stylistic choice with her intended audience in mind. Lorde went on to win the competition for Mockingjay Part 1 with her own song 'Yellow Flicker Beat'.

When I heard she did a cover of one of my FAV, imo underrated, songs of theirs I was pumped. It was years after the movie came out as I never watched them. I was very disappointed to hear the lyric change, but as it was for movie I understand. And whoever wrote these lyrics got them wrong even 4 her version btw.
