i feel like im the only one who absolutely loved this? i mean i definitely love the og as well, theres more soul and strength. but this cover has a wavering, gritty, slow vibe to it. especially at 2:07 - 2:29, those wavering notes.. that odd mismatched beat.. i love it. also at 3:07 when she said "and your friends theyre gone", that slight intonation/change, it made me feel something. i dont know. it felt really personal the way she sang it. and it hit home for me. and at 2:42 when she said "ignore everybody else," you could hear her smile. again, the way she made it feel personal was beautiful. i feel so many notes of nostalgia, sadness, and loneliness from this cover and i liked it a lot.
+Molina Danh What you say about when she says "and your friends they're gone": it's exactly what I noticed the first time I listened to this cover, too! So nice to see that somebody else noticed that :)
I enjoyed this. I don't like when people over compare a cover to the original. No one is going to do a better james blake version than james blake. She made this her own, and it completely works if you understand her style.
*wow, i didnt expect to cry, but this was such a stunning cover. ESPECIALLY the beginning when shes just belching out those perfect ohhh ohoh ohh ohhhh riffs. ugh, her voice is so nice.*
isn't a cover yours? your own spin to it? she obviously isn't James Blake. however this is obviously her style. don't expect it to sound like James Blake. you like Lorde, then you can appreciate it.
it's her style. meaning it's the way she likes to make her music. whether you want to call it a style or "the way its commonly made". it shouldn't be torn apart because it doesn't sound like James version. the definition of style is a manner of doing something. so I think its safe to say that's her style. I mean she doesn't own it that style. there's no Lorde copyright. however it definitely is her style though.
+Kai Si I know what it means. All I was saying was that a cover does not specifically have to be remade to your own original style to be considered a cover. It is often made into a different style, but it can very well be exactly like the original song and still be a cover. Either way, it is very hard to get a cover exactly like the original.
i used to question her wacky stage presence but now i just appreciate that she's not conforming to the representation of women in music, she's clearly attractive and not using that as a selling point.. instead she's being herself and a bit weird. I like it. Go Lorde.
I mean sure, but the likely-hood that she performs in a style for a socio-political reason is unlikely. When you have an obsession for music, this just makes sense. You feel every crotchet, every quaver. You conduct the feelings you have almost into the music. And what backs this is that her eyes never open. She is completely lost in her art. This makes her authentic, as opposed to fake for purpose
It's obviously not James Blake but it's Lorde. She took one of my favorite songs and made it her own, she added her own twist on it and I like it. Well done.
O.K., I'm not a Lorde fan, but I can't understand all the bitterness and hate. How many of you have any musical talent at all?. Let alone the courage to put something out there for the world to see/critic. James Blake is brilliant, no doubt, but I think what you are seeing with Lorde, is that she loves this song, and she is hearing it in her head as she tries to perform her version of it. More power to her. I sing like an idiot when there's no one around, but I would not dare put it on TH-cam. Let's all share the planet and stop hating each other.
she didn't make it her own though...It's way too close to the original to be an appropriation and not true enough to the original to be a cover. It just seems...lost
Isaiah Moreno No I didn't...I said that it's too close to the original to be an appropriation, but not true enough to the original to be a cover. A cover is like Alex Turner's version of Feel Like We're Only Going Backwards, where the song is just played on acoustic guitar...everything else is the same. An appropriation is like Dead Letter Circus' version of Killing In the Name where they completely rewrote the song.
13dirty666 I think you might be the one who seems.... lost. Lorde actually did make it her own by singing it in a dark and slower way, and why does it have to fall under your specific criteria? Last time I checked a cover is an artists take on something, and Lorde did just that, she sang this song in her style. You're saying that this is two opposite things, too close to the original, and not true enough to the original.
Isaiah Moreno well I disagree it was her style, or that it was dark. What I mean is that, for me, the cover doesn't know where it's going. It's as if she's trying to do something different, but keeping all the parts which makes the original the original. I don't like using the word 'pushed', but it feels, for me, as if she's pushing it to much to be different, without having the creativity needed to be different
Not only do I think she did an amazing job on this cover, I also think it's a great compliment to James Blake. The fact that she's animated doesn't mean she's fake, as many comments suggest, it means she's able to find passion in someone else's work. Kudos James Blake.
You guys need to stop hating. She has her own voice. And with that being said she sang it her own way. You guys need to stop judging because i dont see any of yall as a judge on the voice or something like that so what gives u the right. I loved it
as an artist you have to try and experiment without worrying about failing. for all of you hating without giving constructive criticism, you don't understand how good art is created. also someone said some comment about New Zealand and coming from someone who lived there and knew many artists, it and Australia are great environments for supporting artists.
For one thing James doesn't say, "I'll be the girl you loved", she does. He doesn't say, "I'll", he is speaking to this girl giving her encouragement to get past some major hurt in her life. He says, "Be the girl you loved."
21SPICY Exactly! I mean I'm a huge Nirvana fan and the only time I'll moan about covers is when someone actually butchers it (miley cyrus *cough*), Lorde did a fine job in her own way, fans need to stop whining about covers
James Blake has a very unique style. A combination of hip hop, electronic, soul, minimalism, and more. All of it was executed very well from Lorde. It sounds sluggish because that's the style. The keyboardist sounds off because he's supposed to. Her hands are crazy because she's deciding not to be a performer and allow her focus to be only on the music, forgetting what everyone else would care about while watching her. Well done.
this is so good because it shows the true depth the word cover has. a cover isn't a replicate, and lorde really made this song her own. i am a huge fan of both, and her take is incredible. you
I am a big fan of James Blake and just the fact that she did a cover for this song makes me respect her, doesnt matter if its perfect or not. I think people that give her shit for this are a little confused, this should convince you that Lorde is a little more than just a cash grabbing artist that makes songs about being in the club all the damn time.
this is so good because it shows the true depth the word cover has. a cover isn't a replicate, and lorde really made this song her own. i am a huge fan of both, and her take is incredible.
The moves she makes in their lives are completely original, although it seems to be getting a spirit. His vocals are amazing and she deserves much more recognition! QUEEN.
I feel like she didn't do a bad job. it was actually cool to listen too. but I do like The original version better. when I listen to james Blake I can feel the passion and emotion through his voice.
Yea agreed, you can feel his pain, sorrow, raw emotion. Lorde is a great great singer, and I can tell was really trying in this video, but she doesn't lack soul, she just doesn't feel James emotions, she hasnt been what has been through. A lot of soul singers are good because their singing is raw emotion.
Kreator Lifestyle There's some things I like about the original and some things that Lorde did better; for one, the instrumentals. They didn't detract from the importance of the lyrics or the vocals, but rather supported and nurtured them. Just my opinion :)
Kreator Lifestyle Lorde's voice has a lack of IMPACT she doesn't do Hard hitting notes she likes to stay in 1-3 octaves while being very monotone; even her most impactful "Suddenly I am hit" was really weak in tonality and dynamics. Lorde is a great singer but her main issues is her monotone vocals, while it does what it does best; shouts isn't one of them; I'll give her credit for doing it in a way that suited her voice
Z0MB1E I don't like the way she sings it it's like a 12 year old trying to do a grown man impression it's embarrassing and I think the 12 year old would do better.
I know but in all honesty if your going to cover some one at least try to do it right or don't make it out to sound like your making fun of the original artest, I'm not saying I hate her performance trust me her singing is ok I guess but I don't think she should try singing songs that don't belong to her if it's gonna sound like that
Whether this is good or bad, this is the art I want. It is so interesting to see these two mechanics come together! Also let us not forget how incredibly good James Blake is. Approaching this song is brave.
This cover reminds me of eating Pistachios. Right when you decide you're gonna have your last pistachio you get a bad Pistachio and you have to keep eating pistachios until you finally get the bad taste of that 1 pistachio out of your mouth.
Don't see why everyone's hating. I sing like this too when I'm alone in my room recording. It's part of the passion and focusing on your voice. This is a good cover. I love the original too. Y'all need to get over yourselves.
Don't understand the hate at all, I like the james blake version and I like this version .. if you didn't like it you probably misunderstood blake's version in the first place
Nah she takes the emotion out of Retrograde. As a long time listener of James Blake, I feel like she just stripped back the song and tried to make it her own, when she just sort of killed Retrograde. There's something about when James sings it that she just doesn't touch on in this cover. :///
It kind of disgusts me how people react so poorly to covers. An individual is creating their own art, their own interpretation of the song. Comparing covers to the original would be like comparing a movie sequel to the original film. They are entirely different entities, with their own artistic value and credibility.
Thanks! As someone who does covers, it grinds my gears to see critiques like some that I see on this video. If the comments are constructive musically, that take no offense to that. Some of these are just ridiculous.
I get your point I hate when people compare, and to each their own but some covers are amazing when an artist takes a song and cover it, it's suppose to take it to another level - however this was a demotion. Covers that were great or at least could stand up to the original was Whitney Houston's Cover of I will always love you, birdy's skinny love, Jeff buckley's cover of hallelujah, and the list goes on. I get she was trying to make it her own but it just didn't fit to me, all the best parts if the song were eliminated. This in no way enhanced the song she just tried to fix something that wasn't broken. I'm not comparing the two, just saying she didn't enhance the song. Some cover at least showcase the lyrics but it didn't even do that.
Movie to a sequel what??. More like a movie to a reboot of that movie... anyway its called a cover cause its a cover of THE SAME FUCKING SONG. So comparisons are expected
+cobraman228 It was incredibly boring... I feel sorry for them though; she seems to change tempo a fair bit. It's less obvious in the voice, but it makes the piano sound bad.
the Piano sounds wrong because they stripped the chord progression down so much, the one the original is a lot more intricate. But I do agree she doesn't seem to keep time very well, her voice is great though.@@chelseaw9009
People are idiots. Before I get swamped with hate I'm going to say I'm not a Lorde Fanboy even if I do have her album. People don't forget that this is a COVER! which means its not going to sound like the original. You have the original artist for that. Cut her some slack, this is her portrayal of Retrograde
I agree, should such a beautiful tune. but it deserves to be expressed spread on its own. Hope the rest of the song has the opportunity opportunity to.
Doreen Sorolla That's because this was glued together with edits to compensate for her lack of confidence. Understandable in this day & age with so much hate.
Goddamn it, I can't tell if I like her singing or fucking hate it. Within a minute I bounce back and forth about twenty times. Guess Ill just chalk it up as me liking it, cuz the world has enough negativity in it.
Ok maybe most people don't like it, but I do... The instrumental kinda ruins it, not her voice... Anyway, respect to Lorde for trying this and for being as alternative as she is
not sure if i like her voice on this song, but her voice is dope though.she definitely put her own spin on it. but i don't like how she replaced the humming with "ooh wo-oah wo-oah" cuz in my opinion the humming in the background is the best part lol
***** I find Blake's humming on the song annoying and prefer this version. The problem with that is Blake's voice is not appealing to me, but Lorde's is. Since it is a matter of taste and what tones and pitches one finds pleasing to the ear it just so happens that both versions can be considered great due to the song itself. And I do respect your thickness.
news flash to the people in this comment section saying she did a bad job: a cover doesn’t always have to be an exact replica of the source material. this video and cover are textbook artistic expression and I love how lorde spun one of my favorite songs of all time to be her own.
Fair enough she put her own twist on it and thats good but james blake could perform through a walkie talkie while having tonsillitis and still sound better but each to their own
Lorde is 18 and killing it. Hypercritical losers and trolls in the youtube comments box can probably taste the lake of fire for all she cares. haha. You honestly think that people coming to watch this video are going to see your opinion as valid?. lol. "oh my god, the way she moves makes me wonder if she is autistic, I just can't bear it, I have to comment to let people know my feelings about this".
I find it strange how some of her songs have a lot of positive comments, whereas others get shitted on. Personally, I love her and admire how she's different than the usual artists.
She is so awesome and seeing her so radically out of her usual sound was incredible, especially considering how much she really fucking gets into it and loves every second of it. Bravo.
They both bring good things to the table so why is everyone hating so much? James Blake was amazing and lorde has her own touch to it, they should collaborate
This is really weird but I just thought I would point out that in the video she starts out with her sleeve down and then for a very short period, around 0:54 to 0:59 her sleeve is rolled up and then after that it is back to normal... is that not wierd??
I think it showcases her unique vocals, which I personally love. It's nice to be my age and be able to say what you actually think, rather than jump on teenage hate-wagons. And kids, it's just a version - it wasn't meant to rock the world. When Lorde wants to do that, she releases her originals.
Not bad but not as good as James. It's her style, which is unique, just not my cup of tea. No hate, just my opinion. Lorde is awesome, keep doing your thing gurl.
omg listen to her voice rather than correcting what her hands are meant to be doing. at least its interesting and unique, rather than her just standing there. she's amazing
Wait a second,....I think the cover is actually pretty good,....it's not bad at all. I've heard both repectively,.....and they are both great. Why is everyone hating on Lorde I mean she's a better musician than the most people. Reminder, this is "like a version", and her spin on this is very good,...I like how she slowed it down and mixed up the the octaves of the vocals to suit her voice,..and this is very well done. Leave Lorde alone,...if she's so bad, then why is she more successful than the lot of you. respect lorde, from one musician to another.
Give her an A for effort but its pretty obvious her interpretation and cover of the song wasnt really close in being up to par with the original, but thats expected I guess.
i feel like im the only one who absolutely loved this? i mean i definitely love the og as well, theres more soul and strength. but this cover has a wavering, gritty, slow vibe to it. especially at 2:07 - 2:29, those wavering notes.. that odd mismatched beat.. i love it.
also at 3:07 when she said "and your friends theyre gone", that slight intonation/change, it made me feel something. i dont know. it felt really personal the way she sang it. and it hit home for me.
and at 2:42 when she said "ignore everybody else," you could hear her smile. again, the way she made it feel personal was beautiful.
i feel so many notes of nostalgia, sadness, and loneliness from this cover and i liked it a lot.
No. Just no. James Blake was a one of a kind of singer. She can't be better than the original.
Lucas Ho tell me, when did i say that she was better? im just saying i liked it
Molina Danh I was just saying that she can't beat James. Wasn't saying you said that.
i agree with you love the gritty feel to this, and I love that part you mentioned with the odd beats
I think the complaints are about the lazy generic sounding instrumentation. I would've loved to hear her over a more enthusiastically produced track
@@Blorcus ditto
*wow, i didnt expect to cry, but this was such a stunning cover. ESPECIALLY the beginning when shes just belching out those perfect ohhh ohoh ohh ohhhh riffs. ugh, her voice is so nice.*
loooove this cover and thank you so much for introducing me to james blake lorde ! :)
This cover is amazing, let her movements alone! she's feeling the music
isn't a cover yours? your own spin to it? she obviously isn't James Blake. however this is obviously her style. don't expect it to sound like James Blake. you like Lorde, then you can appreciate it.
it doesn't necessarily have to be a different style, but its commonly made that way.
it's her style. meaning it's the way she likes to make her music. whether you want to call it a style or "the way its commonly made". it shouldn't be torn apart because it doesn't sound like James version. the definition of style is a manner of doing something. so I think its safe to say that's her style. I mean she doesn't own it that style. there's no Lorde copyright. however it definitely is her style though.
+Kai Si I know what it means. All I was saying was that a cover does not specifically have to be remade to your own original style to be considered a cover. Often times it is your style. Especially when celebrities cover a song. I get what you are saying though. That's great insight!
+Kai Si
ya ya ya
This.. made me want to listen to the original version of Retrogade.
lmfao
+Psykoged LOL
+Beastly Yep, but isn't bad at all
Yup.
😂😭😂
i used to question her wacky stage presence but now i just appreciate that she's not conforming to the representation of women in music, she's clearly attractive and not using that as a selling point.. instead she's being herself and a bit weird. I like it. Go Lorde.
well said :)
This makes her authentic, as opposed to fake for purpose
lmao "doesnt use that to her advantage" got me fucked up XD
I dont understand all the dislikes! I could sit here for hours listening to this on repeat.
Because nobody wants to hear a masterpiece like retrograde get butchered.
Fricken GOLD! I smile more every time I hear this..... Thanks!

This brings back so many memories. I used to listen to this cover all night long three summers ago.
Obviously she doesn't sound like James Blake because she's not James Blake, she's Lorde. She made it her own and i think she did an excellent job.
she didn't make it her own though...It's way too close to the original to be an appropriation and not true enough to the original to be a cover. It just seems...lost
13dirty666 So...... you're saying its too similar to the original yet not true enough to the original. How in any way does that make sense?
Isaiah Moreno No I didn't...I said that it's too close to the original to be an appropriation, but not true enough to the original to be a cover. This is a phenomenal performance with an incredible amount of feel and emotion. And I adore the James Blake original too.

the Piano sounds wrong because they stripped the chord progression down so much, the one the original is a lot more intricate. But I do agree she doesn't seem to keep time very well, her voice is great though.@@chelseaw9009
Right?! I wish it was her voice over the instrumental of the real/original version
Square and plane... Too simple.
Original and unapologetically unique. Keep slaying Lorde, Bowie approved and so do I.
I like it. Took the dark to a whole new dark.
ya ya ya I'm dark ya ya ya
+Jesús Sarmiento. btw is your picture haru from my little monster?
+Kamran Mahmood umm no 😂😂☺️😻haru
That hand in the air is a trend created a long time ago and it serves a great purpose of identifying people who are anything but genuine.
People are idiots. Before I get swamped with hate I'm going to say I'm not a Lorde Fanboy even if I do have her album. People don't forget that this is a COVER! which means its not going to sound like the original. You have the original artist for that. Cut her some slack, this is her portrayal of Retrograde
Two words - Emotional, genius
I am lorde ya ya ya
lmao
Dad? Is that you?!
"I'm your father" *dies*
Lorde Lorde.. Lorde Lorde Lorde
I love Lorde's rendition of Retrograde, it gives me a different vibe than the original which is what all good covers are about.
Randy's Got A Beautiful Voice
omfg its not randy its lorde, ella
+Alyssa Soares obvious joke is obvious m8
i know what the fuck it is and its gotten really old.
Haha south park ahhahaha lolllll
Beautifully done
Listening to this after you heard an original version is like eating a lime after you've just had a mojito.
Nftwae Where did you hear the original?
same place as everyone else, TH-cam. it's called retrograde by James blake
It was a few months back on the Pohoda festival in Slovakia. James played Retrogade as well as some other songs and it was perfect.
Nftwae Awww so lucky! Wish I could go listen to his heavenly voice live one day!
I agree, should such a beautiful tune. but it deserves to be expressed spread on its own. Hope the rest of the song has the opportunity opportunity to.
I love this and James blakes version:) love finding awesome covers to amazing originals 💗💗
Covers are about artist putting their own twist on a song, in this case I feel she's definitely done a good job.
Retrograde is how I survived 2020. 🙏
Am I the only one who's totally confused how her right hand got covered again from 0:57-1:00?
Doreen Sorolla Good catch lol
Doreen Sorolla That's because this was glued together with edits to compensate for her lack of confidence. Understandable in this day & age with so much hate.
***** sad truth. >.
Doreen Sorolla
All the more reason to love =)
Doreen Sorolla I think the more important question is how her right hand got uncovered from 0:50-0:57 lol
Amazing cover !! Such a good voice 👍
Goddamn it, I can't tell if I like her singing or fucking hate it. Within a minute I bounce back and forth about twenty times. Guess Ill just chalk it up as me liking it, cuz the world has enough negativity in it.
this was awesome!
That moment when James Blake has more vocal range than a fucking teenager lolol
Lmaooo what a retarded comment, also James and Lorde are both goats but Lorde on top fr
No one covers James Blake and gets away with it but Lorde, god damn! New found respect for her :) Definitely checking her music out now.
Ok maybe most people don't like it, but I do... The instrumental kinda ruins it, not her voice... Anyway, respect to Lorde for trying this and for being as alternative as she is
She’s obviously a great vocalist but I hate the “ohhh, OhoWOAHoh” and virtually every other choice she made here. and the keys sound like fuckin shit
not sure if i like her voice on this song, but her voice is dope though.she definitely put her own spin on it. but i don't like how she replaced the humming with "ooh wo-oah wo-oah" cuz in my opinion the humming in the background is the best part lol
lol I thought I was the only one.
Yeah it absolutely sucked
news flash to the people in this comment section saying she did a bad job: a cover doesn’t always have to be an exact replica of the source material. this video and cover are textbook artistic expression and I love how lorde spun one of my favorite songs of all time to be her own.
I came back just to read these comments 😂😂😂
same😂
nothing like getting your self esteem from hate comments lol
Omg me too!!!
I FELT this song when James Blake sang it and I felt it the exact same way just now. Lorde, she killed this cover. Period!
I personally like James Blake's better, but I love how lorde changed it into her own version where it was fitting for her.
Honestly, Lorde is an amazing, but I'm so glad I never heard this cover until now. Kinda wish I could unhear it. But such is life I suppose.
Lorde did a good job in terms of removing the best part of the song from the song.
Huge disagree.
I feel the music coming out... She is great!
the original is obviously better but she did better than I thought she would
This is the best Retrograde cover for me. Lorde's voice is so beautiful it's entrancing.
she was feeling it...
Hey, Lorde, don't listen to the haters if you're actually looking at this. Keep doing your thing, girl.
I think her voice sounds beautiful
I disagree
I love it! Lorde, you did great😘🌹
I freaking love this more than the original honestly its on repeat she's great at everything she does!
Her voice is amazing, I love it!!
Fair enough she put her own twist on it and thats good but james blake could perform through a walkie talkie while having tonsillitis and still sound better but each to their own
Well that's specific
I don’t want James Blake to ever get tonsillitis but I’d probably buy that cd.
Love Lorde! Love Blake!!
Dude. It's not her song as she's making it sound like shit. If you liked real music, you'd understand
Jonah Miller if you appreciated and respected other artists of this generation maybe you'd be a little cooler
Hypocritical? I believe?
***** cheers for clearing that up :) the more you know...
Bravo.
Guys calm down, it's good and different. Hearing the same thing gets boring. Think of it as a good thing that she changed it.
Oh yeahh
I guess they edited the cover
I love it lorde can make any song 🎶 great and beautiful
Holy cow how could a song this good become so fucking bad?
Love this.
I think it showcases her unique vocals, which I personally love. It's nice to be my age and be able to say what you actually think, rather than jump on teenage hate-wagons. And kids, it's just a version - it wasn't meant to rock the world. When Lorde wants to do that, she releases her originals.
I am finding this voice very comforting.
she wasn't that bad but this is not the song and singer you want to cover. ever
+Daniel Korolev Why?
Lone Wolf because James Blake is one of a kind
Daniel Korolev Oh, I did hear someone else in the comments say Lorde is good but can't replicate the emotion in Blake's voice.
Lone Wolf yes. and I am not trying to sound hipster ish. he really is that good.
+Daniel Korolev I completely agree, He's like adele in that way, shes just too dynamic to cover.
I love this
I DONT USUALLY COMMENT ON TH-cam BUT WHEN I DO ITS BAD.
😂
😄😂😂😂
+Anılcan Kutval "a passionate performance"
Lmfao
A drugged out performance...
I LOVE LORDE SOOOOOOO MUCH!!! *screams* 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Not bad but not as good as James. It's her style, which is unique, just not my cup of tea. No hate, just my opinion. Lorde is awesome, keep doing your thing gurl.
I LOVE THIS
omg listen to her voice rather than correcting what her hands are meant to be doing. at least its interesting and unique, rather than her just standing there. she's amazing
She has more talent than most will ever had. Her own songs are testament to that. Haters can hate but that is because they lack her talent
She did Not do this song justice at all ..she's missin Soul
really love her but I couldn't love her on this song.
Yepp pretty much
Yep.
she's also missing all of the notes...more so than soul
lol yea that too
