Chase Trifecta vs Amex Trifecta (Why I Have Both)

  • In this video, I compare the Chase Trifecta vs Amex Trifecta to see which credit card setup is the best credit card setup in 2022. The Chase Trifecta (with the Chase Sapphire Preferred or Reserve, Chase Freedom Flex, and Chase Freedom Unlimited) is great because it is easy to understand, the points are flexible, and there are many ways to redeem for value. The Amex Trifecta (Amex Platinum card, Amex Gold card, and Amex Blue Business Plus) can be more valuable for certain types of travel and has more benefits and credits, but it requires more research and it is very expensive to have with $945 in annual fees!
    Here, I go over all of the basics of these 2 popular credit card setups made up of some of the best credit cards in 2022! While not everyone wants to use travel credit cards, these 2 are great for the majority of people. I have both the Amex Trifecta and the Chase Trifecta and they give me a ton of value and benefits.
    Hopefully this video is helpful for anyone looking at getting the Chase Trifecta or the American Express Trifecta, but check out some of my other videos below for more details on these credit cards!

    Great review of not only the cards that make up both trifectas but also suggesting the Chase Trifecta for beginners! I have also heard that the Chase trifecta seems to be better suited for domestic flights in terms of redeeming points while the Amex trifecta usually has better redemption for international travel! I haven't really looked deeply into how true that is but also something to consider if someone is choosing one over the other. For me though, I'm working to get both!

    • @Daniel_Braun
      @Daniel_Braun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Thanks Jacob! Yeah I would agree, Chase is great for a lot of domestic stuff and Amex really gets the best value for international redemptions. I want to do a video exploring some redemption examples to compare. Great to hear that you're working on both!

    Daniel, I just found out that Amex actually increases the rates for the Fine Hotels & Resorts for Platinum members in return for the $100 credit and other benefits. In one case I realized my stay was going to be $490 greater as a Platinum member than it would be booking as a regular Gold member for example. The math completely does not add-up and they advertise these benefits as being complimentary to Platinum members. This basically cancels out the value of this benefit...I wonder how many people don't realize they are being ripped off.

    • @SunsetSheen
      @SunsetSheen ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That’s why it’s always important to compare the FHR rate to the regular rate on the hotel’s own website. People who blindly just book through FHR without cross referencing are making a mistake.

    Thanks for the video, Daniel. I’m totally in your camp. I have the Chase trifecta and 2/3 of the Amex trifecta (don’t have any business cards). I generally use Chase points for Hyatt and Amex points for Delta (I live in a Delta hub city, and the Platinum card gets me into the Delta Sky Club). And I totally agree: that gold card has bought a lot of groceries! Lol. Enjoy your weekend, my friend.

    Great video! The format of this video worked. Nice job. For me, the Chase setup is where I will focus all my attention for now. Through my corporate AMEX card, I got an offer for $100 off the annual fee on the Gold card. As tempting as that is, I am still going to focus on Chase and accumulating the Chase UR points. I do have the Chase Freedom Unlimited and Sapphire Preferred, but am going to wait on the Chase Freedom Flex as I just got the Sapphire card last month and will be applying for a car loan in the spring. Have a couple inquiries that are set to fall off my report in the next month so want to be in the best shape possible when applying for that car note. Appreciate your content and all the effort you put into it. Cheers!

    • @Daniel_Braun
      @Daniel_Braun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much for the comment Chris, great to hear that you are focusing on Chase because those are the most important cards to get in place first! Love that you've got a strategy in place like that. I agree, more important to focus on those credit score impacts when you're applying for any other type of loan in the near future, so its smart to wait like you're doing. Appreciate you watching as always!

    Amex Business Platinum is a worthwhile mention here. I like it much more than the personal one. It gives you the same 5 points for flights and hotels, the same lounge access, but also has a 35% points rebate on a selected airline or business class flights, which makes a point to be worth 1.5c+. This way, restaurants with Amex Gold can provide up to 6% spend, and general spend on Business Plus provides up to 3%. Plus easy to use $10/mo wireless credit and $200/6mo Dell credits much better help offset the annual fee.
    As for Dell credits - at least during 1st 6 months of the year I use it to buy tax software. Also, Dell is good at price-matching, and price-matched purchases, obviously, count towards the Dell credit.

    • @Daniel_Braun
      @Daniel_Braun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yeah that Business Platinum card is a very good option as well! Really good feature with this points rebate on certain flights like that. I'd rather have the Dell credit than the Saks credit since Dell would be more useful but that type of credit makes sense for a business card. Thanks so much for watching and commenting Anton!

    Awesome video! Definitely helped me understand point value better. I love the experience with AMEX better then Chase BUT i love how easy it is to redeem points with Chase. I wish AMEX would partner with American Air (they have hubs with where.i mainly fly to). But ill have to figure out a way to book with Delta, hilton i have no issues with, and i get special rates with my company with enterprise (with 4 year loyalty with them). Amex trifecta works great for me.
    Also the grocery on the Amex gold I use to buy gift cards for stores that I cannot get 4% or more at!
    Purchase protection and cell phone protection on the Amex platinum are also amazing and easy to use! Also the Charles Schwab platinum for the 1.1x cash per point cash out is nice.

    • @Daniel_Braun
      @Daniel_Braun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! It all depends on whether or not that card is still giving you value. If it isn't then I would just say to downgrade if you can and look for other card that might better fit your needs. The Venture card only has a $95 annual fee so I don't know if they would give you an offer or waive the annual fee but they might! I personally like Chase and American Express more than Capital One for what they offer.
      But if you get good value from the Venture card, then keep it if you want! I think there's probably better no annual fee options that earn better though. Hope that helps!

      @Daniel_Braun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good question Kyle and thanks for the response Raine! That's right, there's not any point redemption multipliers like Chase while is why I like Chase points for most people because they're more flexible and easier to redeem for good value. With Amex, yes that Schwab Platinum card gives the 1.1 CPP options to redeem for cash into a brokerage account. But other than that, you'd have to transfer Amex Points to different travel partner programs to get similar redemption values to those 1.25 and 1.5 CPP option that Chase has. Hope that helps!

    • @Daniel_Braun
      @Daniel_Braun  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Its a very fair point you have Josiah! I'll say that it won't be the same for everyone. But as far as my Chase cards - its $95 for my CSP but I've booked a few trips worth $1,000s with points because of the CSP's points transfer partners so I'll gladly pay that annual fee each year for the redemption values I can get. I think most people would be able to find good value from a Chase setup as well for only $95 per year.
      For Amex, its a lot more subjective with the $945 of annual fees combined on the Gold and Platinum cards. The credits from these cards completely offset these annual fees because I would already have paid cash for those services covered by the credits. So all of the points that I earn from sign up bonuses and mainly from groceries and dining with the gold card are all good for me. And then those Amex points are very valuable as well for booking travel for me.
      So for a cash back setup or a simple credit card setup, I'd say having these 2 setups is probably overkill and not worth it for everyone. But for people looking to travel with points, its very much for it, considering all of the other benefits as well!
      Hope that explains a little, but yeah I can see how its not worth it for you and many others too

    I'm only missing the blue business card from Amex, but I do like both set ups. Now I'm just adding random cards with downgrade paths for the intro bonuses (:

      Yeah the BBP card is good but definitely not necessary either. And that's a great strategy to have by going for those types of cards!

      Business Platinum is a better component for the trifecta, in my experience. And you don't even need to have a formal corp to be approved, you can just be an individual (say, selling a thing or two on ebay). They give those to everyone.
