I literally can not believe that this tutorial has not had more views! Not only is sub bass pretty damn essential but I couldn't think of anyone I'd rather take notes from than Distance. Anything I can learn from you my friend I'd consider priceless knowledge! True legend in the game! big up
Stereo plugins are used to widen the stereo image of the sound. After a stereo widner is used a plugin is placed at the end of this chain to then return the frequencies below 100hz to mono (for example fab filter Pro-Q in mid/side mode). So you would you end up with the sub being mono (below 100hz), but any harmonics generated by the waveform above 100hz being spread out over the stereo image. This gives the impression that the sub is big and wide whilst still maintaining mono compatability
Rick Heffron Most of that is due to the acoustics audible through the environment which car speakers are made to allow through. Especially where they are in the car doors. The air is more condensed and those lower frequencies travel more condensed and with less distance. You are sealed on a metal box, you could say. This would happen in any tight environment with almost any speaker system. In a club, however, the subs will carry the sound (Low bass is omni directional) and will not be heard if it is below the 45-40 range and with the sheer volume can actually damage the subs. Deep bass is not meant to be heard, it is meant to be felt. It is the middle bass that sits atop of the sub which gives it the harmonics and lets it be heard. 28 hz is not required in music. 35 to 40 is the lowest we would go.
You can put that 'Synth' in to the 'Sub' channel. What you don't want is 2 of the same sub channels, 1 of them being processed differently, then recombined at the master with the original. Even with ADC (Automatic Delay Compensation) or in the case of Fruity Loops, PDC (Plugin Delay Compensation), phasing can occur due to the length of sine waves in the sub frequencies and that will eat up your headroom causing your finished tracks to be lower in volume even though the meters will be peaking
moar!! these are such good tutorials. actually explaining why you tweak certain things, and your theory behind it is so much better than saying, 'well turn this knob to 3 o'clock, and turn this all the way up', and whatever. peace.
finally man! searching for distance masterclass tuts since youtube born! MORE MORE please!!! Make a video with you in your studio mate! that would be great
So Glad you are doing these tutorials the way you talked everything through helped alot! would love a video on drum programming & how you make your basslines but tbh i will very much look forward to any tutorial you put out cheers!
Yes mate! Not only does the tutorial provide a wealth of knowledge on area of synthesis thats so often overlooked + misinterpreted, the tutorial gives an invaluable lesson in how any budding producer should approach ANY aspect of music synthesis/production. Rather than dictating parameters/DB's/values, Distance actually EXPLAINS what and WHY he is tweaking. "If you're doing it and you're like, yeah this sounds shit. Well then its shit, you've gotta make it sound how you want it to sound." BIG UP
I like this a lot.. i was looking for a tutorial that had some of the higher sounds that you hear along with sub bass. all the other ones just showed the low sin wave which doesnt really have a distinct sound
A tutorial on arrangement would be great. One of the hardest things to do is move beyond the initial 16 bar loop. It would be awesome to get some insight on how you arrange your tracks.
Thank you very much for these tutorials. Ive been looking for guides into sound design for the deeper side of dubstep and this is the perfect starting point. If anybody can point me in the right direction for more tutorials with deeper, darker dubstep in mind please do so. Thanks alot!
@TheDjDistance Cheers for doing these tutorials Distance they were easy to follow and have been a good help. I know you mentioned doing a mixdown tutorial possibly in one of your vids, would be great if you could make that one. Cheers again.
Assuming that 'Synth' = mid range frequencies, 'Bass' = Sub Bass frequencies (below 80hz). Are you wanting to create a full range synth sound on one track (bus), then send out just the bass frequencies from that track to a 'Sub Bass' bus to be processed individually?
@croatianthug He wouldn't because a compressor would lower the "roof" as I call it, so really bassy kicks sound distorted when you don't want them to be.
im noticing it really does come down to some bad ass plugins used correctly to give it that quality touch, not most, but a lot of the time. loovin this tut man great for inspriation, keep em comin!
@justindowty Well only thing that I can think of is that your sub is clashing with your low mid synth. EQ out till about 100-120hz. on your low mid synth.
yea, if its right, send some bass frequencies from original synth sound, I think SYNTH with some sub bass sounds which include some LFO in the bass for example, I wanna it for some interesting sound in the bass, no equal SUB
I'm a little confused...we're using the square wave because it has more high harmonics than the sin wave, but doesn't the high shelf eq get rid of those higher frequencies anyway??
i need to know how to keep the sub bass and other synths from clashing. i have the high and low pass filters correct on the synths but when the track is played all together the mid range bass affects the volume of the sub bass. i just want the sub bass to stay seperate from the rest of the track and cant figure out what im doing wrong. if theres a tut for that a link would be much appreciated. thanks
do u know how to re-creat one Key element in Flux Pavillions "I cant stop synth". specifically in the 5:00 min version at 2:40theres this synth that sounds like a bit-crushed string horn element. Maybe uses a bit crushed saw wave. Its not hard hiding it sounds like air with a crunchy razz sound. I noticed he uses this in almost all of his synth to fill out the sound.
Sounds like a saw wave high passed (to remove the bass and some mids) with some distortion as well to give it that raspy sound. Also there may be a few saws in unison with slight detuning to widen the sound.
There is no right or wrong ;) You can get phasing problems. For example if you send 'some' of the Bass frequencies to the 'Sub Bass Bus' and process them differently (with different plugins) than the Bass frequencies that are left in the 'Synth Bus', when they are combined back together at the Master Bus you will have phasing issues.. What sequencer/DAW do you use?
You can read a tutorial anywhere about mixing and mastering, this is DISTANCE, ask him about something unique to him! I would like to see one on your drum programming as well!
tutorial on pads, atmosphere and how to make your tune sound full and warm/crisp ive been producing almost three years now and just cant get the sound right!
Hi, I have question plz, If I wanna make some synth sounds, so I make bus track just for synth, add some fx etc..... then I make Bass track just for Subbass, can I have some BASS frequencies on Synth bus and then send it to Subbass bus ???
i bought a pioneer hdj 500 just for this channel aint he wasnt lying about the bass :D Pioneer ftw just like distance imo the dub/dubstep pioneer along with skream, benga :P
thanks for tips mate ! appreciate it:) , I using fl, sooo but it's right if I divide synth for 5 parts.. sub, low, mid, high, treble, synth will play just from low to treble, and sub bass will original, no synth, but it should be issue if I put that synth to sub channel? original (sin) bass will sounds differently, with that synth low sounds, but its not issue, just will sounds mixed, or?!?! too much producers I think that I heard it haha.. -- Using original synth sound for bass,---
@MidnaZ FL/cubase/live.. all suit the same purpose. There shouldn't be anything you can do in cubase, (as far as basic midi + audio is concerned) That can't be done in FL. Personally, I just like cubase more. I started with FL. I wouldnt worry about pros and cons.. just make it happen with what you have. Many professionals use FL.
Thanks heaps for the tutorial, Distance, really appreciate it. If you're considering making another one soon, I would love it if you could make it on EQ techniques. :)
Hey distance just a question im bought/using fl studio producer edition 10 but i see ur using cubase do you recommed it if so what are like the pro/cons compared to fl. and keep it up i mean underground :P
Can someone just clarify, Subs need to be mono due to phasing right ? so many sub tutorials with ppl putting stereo effects on it. Surly one that hits a mono club system your fucked ?
props for putting up a tutorial but to be honest I wouldn't make my bass like this, I prefer my sub to be a sine wave nice and pure!! and have a supporting noise to go along with it
Dude, you need to put the decay level in env 4 up to full in massive so that you don't get that fuzzy sound you talk about when compressing. Thumbs up so that he can see!
brah, thank you so much for this video. Bass has ALWAYS been an issue for me. Iv had Massive for a long time and has absolutely no clue how to use it lol. Cant event ell you ho much this video has helped me. Thanks again brotha! PS- That's an awesome accent!! If I was gay, I would totally be gaying out for you right now LMAO!!

Really good tutorial, if all tutorials on youtube were to this quality we'd all be professional
just a quick tipp - it sounds awesome, when you add a wavearts tubesaturator!
A tutorial on arrangement would be great. One of the hardest things to do is move beyond the initial 16 bar loop. It would be awesome to get some insight on how you arrange your tracks.
@TheDjDistance Cool tutorial mate, would be great if you made a drums tutorial, or maybe mix down and mastering tutorial.
this is a dream come true.. great tutorial here, hopefully more alike will be posted in the future

whooop! distance doing tuts?? massive!! great tut ! highly understandable!!! big ups from croatia!
love your music!

i'd like a tutorial on creating solid ambience as well as making your song move as on instrument if you know what i mean
@TheDjDistance Could you do a tutorial on how to do melodies?
I'm a little confused...we're using the square wave because it has more high harmonics than the sin wave, but doesn't the high shelf eq get rid of those higher frequencies anyway??

after looking for ages, trolling through skrillex's polluted dubstep sounds, i finally found this, some real dubstep
nice vid thanks. suggestion: snares in dubstep and also mid range bass processing.
Percussion and bass mixing to make them stand out more please
@MidnaZ I have hsm80 yamaha monitors and when there is sub bass I can feel it in my chest haha not even with the volume half ways
You could make a tutorial about a full song. In parts..
Love you man.

@TheDjDistance i knw this is probably a retorical question but how do u link massive to cubase?
so you re sample from massive and use the good bits you like eh?

Just remeber I dont have any beats or any other elements rolling so some of this wont apply when working with a full track. All about the tweak.
