You said it best: "Yeah Yeah". That's how I feel about this video too. Absolutely amazing! Well spoken, well paced and well organized. I have learned something today, thank you!
first off i just want to say that you have the most quality and informative tutorials available. they are clear, well constructed, and just as informative and helpful. i learned this bass technique and a few little things in massive i didn't previously know, as well as sidechaining which made this tutorial that much better! thanks so much for the quality work, and also MUCH respect to you for commenting back on most comments and being engaged with your audience! keep the tutorials coming friend!
I'm not an Ableton Live or Massive user, but this tutorial is fantastic because the techniques can be applied in pretty much any other DAW or synth. Thanks to this I was able to make a similar bass with a synth engine that isn't nearly as powerful as Massive, because you kept it so universal. Cheers! :)
Honestly, this was an extremely helpful tut. The fact that you incorporated a wide variety of elements, keyboard shortcuts and explained what things were for definitely helped a ton. Expect a video response with the result of your advice good sir.
This guy is critically disciplinary when it comes to the regulars just crankin' knobs to get muddy beefy sounds that don't fit well into their mixes, I like this guy, his quality as a perfectionist kept me watching the whole video, good job and thanks for the tut :p
I was just working clumsily on a bassline and then I came across your video - many thanks, man - you're quite precious for us newbies here wanting to make some music :) - also just bought your studio template set and it's very helpful. keep it up!
awesome tut vespers i did not know about grouping plugins into an instrument rack nor did i know about a lot of things you covered in this tut, especially filter spreading OMG PHHATNESS!!! watching this vid as helped a lot with sound design and time management now im off to make some patches ;) thank you for putting up tutorials like this for people like me who need that extra help your a good man much respect :)
Very informative, amazing job! I really like how you take the time to explain why something IS instead of just telling people to do something and not really touching the subject.
When you group the instance of massive to add the sub, if you right click massive in the chain selector, you can duplicate your original synth, take out the filters, turn to a sine wave and Bob's your sub bass. Saves having to reset your pitch and glide etc. Ace tutorial btw, thanks a lot. ;)
Amazing tutorial man!!! You actually explain the functionality of the software. Most people are just trying to promote their material and/or give away a patch that doesn't sound half as good!!! I'm looking forward to taking some of your online courses!!!
I love how you explain not to polish a turd, cos it will remain a turd even with 10 osc+fx.. Really great tutorial, you got yourself a new subscriber.. :-)
And as most of us know a "big fat muddy low end" is bad in more ways than just the one mentioned in this video. XD Awesome tutorial btw, man! Really helpful! Thank you so much for uploading. I love the fact that you speak clearly and don't rush through the steps. Subscribed!
Very nice wide and broad tutorial. All though i only really needed like 5 minutes of this tutorial i watched the whole thing and know that others definitely learned a lot from this.
FINALLY someone who does a PROPER job when doing tutorials. So VERY tired of all these: "Now you turn X to Y, Z to alfa-omega x33 at 76%!" tutorials that gives no actual understanding of what actually is going on. You actually bother with letting us know exactly how the wheels turn, instead of simply stating that they do. Gives me a much better understanding of Massive and synthesizers.
Very good tutorial, a few suggestions: 6:15 If the compressor's attack time is shorter than the lookahead, the compressor will only attack as fast as the lookahead is set. 7:05 Save more CPU by grouping your kick and snare to a bus and sidechaining that. Removes need for an extra comp, but if you want you can then use extra comp(s) for double/triple sidechain compression to get a more pronounced effect (little-scale uses this technique a lot). 17:45 worth pointing out low pass is unnecessary if you are not adding harmonics to the sub with saturation/distortion. A sine wave is a single fundamental frequency, so has no extra upper harmonics to filter out unless you add harmonic distortion. I'd also suggest making a 'bass' preset with monophonic mode and glide engaged.
Hey there Mr. Vespers, great video. I really appreciated how you emphasized the workflow with building this patch. Putting together a solid foundation first and then sculpting from there, rather than trying to put lipstick on a pig, so to speak. I'll definitely be keeping that in mind.
Thanks for the tutorial man... Really gave me a better idea of massive... been using it for a while but ended up just turning random knobs until I had the sound I wanted... This gives me a better idea of what I'm actually doing.
"Your very first thing... in my approach that you do is you select which oscillator you're gonna use. You don't get complicated with all kinds of other shit yet before you choose your oscillator and wave table" Made my day hahaha great tutorial
Great tutorial! I've been trying to design bass sounds in Live using drum racks, Simpler and Sampler and this tutorial has definitely helped me shape my bass sounds. Great job and thanks for posting.
Nice tutorial, congratulations bro! I am going to design this bass myself tonight and see if I can take my favourite changes to make it more custom. Keep on the good work teaching beginners like me how to make good sounds.
Thank you for the vid! just got massive and am new to it so this will help me alot to improve my sounds, Mainly sticking with glitch hop tempo stuff so vid suited me perfect :D
dude, i'm only like 1:46 in but for some reason i really like ur style of presentation, i'll keep my final comment till i'm done w/ the vid, but this is rad so far...9:25 still going strong :) one mistake, on the bass patch you pitch up 12 and down -12, on the sub you pitch up 12 and down +12. other than that...amazing tutorial all the way to the end!
If it happens that I have all drums on one bus together (and even if I don't) I setup another channel with a separate trigger sample dedicated for sidechain. Makes more sense than separating a kick and leaves a lot of flexibility later on. Thanks for the tutorial. Quality as always!
glad to see i went with the right stuff with my akai mpk 25 and apc 40 with ableton live 8 max and massive :) now its just learn try learn try thanks for the tutorial i hope to get good at this like yo someday
Very clear and concise tutorial. It's clear to see why you're a certified Ableton instructor. I'm teaching my mate how to produce in Live and I'll be showing him this tutorial. Liking your quartz pendant btw. Is it an enhydro?
When your dialling in you unison cut off, you can adjust the range of the slider, so if you set it to like 0 - 0.01 rather then the default 0-1.0 you can tweak it more accurately. Just incase you're feeling a little bit fancy
I always liked you because of the great empathic explanations and superb producing profficiency. But since the pig with the lipsticks, I adore you. Thanks for everything, it means a lot for us. Peace!
Excellent tutorial. Id like to encourage playing in more automation as opposed to drawing it in. In my opinion a lot of dance music is suffering from a robotic feel and something as simple as playing in automation as opposed to drawing it can make a huge difference to the feel of songs.
Dude... Sick. Just hearing you say to focus on sound before adding oscillators is a GOLDen tip (unless you know exactly what sound you want and how to get there)
Thanks indeed! This is really instrumental, so to say :) Spent lots of time doing what you do not recommend, that is, going crazy with those effects and ending up with a complete mess that can only be used separately, as a standalone effect.
Oh, I used a free tracker / modular synth called SunVox, although I also recently bought Renoise and have been trying out some free VSTs (I particularly like Rez 3 and nX Synth One).
thanks for the advice though that wasnt the issue I was having lol It was just Massive itself. I've seen people complaining about it in forums and its just the nature of the plugin when you have more than 3 or 4 unisono.
Shit man I've been trying to figure out how I can have big bass and clear drums/percussion/other sounds and could never find an answer. My tracks always sounded muddy. Even though I'm hip hop/ rap this video cleared me up. Finally understand now, especially when you said "it moves it out of the way and makes room".... flipped the light.
Nice one! Was wondering, what is that very modulated sound that finishes off that loop? I have been getting into creating my own little noises, blips and percussion noises to fill my tracks lately..
hi thanks for the advice but i just found out that its due to phase cancellations that goes on when you have more than like 4 voices going in massive while having pitch cutoff on.
I just learned so much about a synth I've had for two years. The best part about your tutorial is you explain WHY you're adjusting certain controls.
man, not only are your tutorials completely accurate as far musical advice but they also cover the theory side of things. big ups.
You said it best: "Yeah Yeah". That's how I feel about this video too. Absolutely amazing! Well spoken, well paced and well organized. I have learned something today, thank you!

Oh yes, this guy. The guy who made the videos I'm going to watch to learn how to use massive. I knew I'd find you some day. Thanks for existing!
When I first opened this video I honestly said to myself " I aint watchin a 23 minute video of this" Well worth my time what an amazing video
Thanks bro, your tutorials are far more in debt and informative than 99% of what's out there. Thanks for all the help, bro - respekt!
I was just working clumsily on a bassline and then I came across your video - many thanks, man - you're quite precious for us newbies here wanting to make some music :) - also just bought your studio template set and it's very helpful. keep it up!
Great tutorial. I love your old school approach to making new sounds. Get your OSC down first!! AMEN
You've got a great understanding of the sound design mindset that everyone seems to miss including me, keep up the sweet tuts
awesome tut vespers i did not know about grouping plugins into an instrument rack nor did i know about a lot of things you covered in this tut, especially filter spreading OMG PHHATNESS!!!

this video is AWESOME im still a noob at synthesis and was overwhelmed at massives interface this helped a lot man thanks
Wow Ive seen hundrets of tutorials, and this is one of the best for sure, very nice explained!
Interesting fun tutorial, alot better then most of seen on YT. Good work!
Love your tutorials man. I've learnt a lot through them. Thanks a lot!
This is a great tutorial, your knowledge and simplistic explaination of each function in massive and Ableton are very helpful, thank you.

yeap volume shaper is a great tool indeed!

awesome tutorial. Clears few questions on my mind already. Thank you!
Finaly someone who explains whats going on! geesus it took me forever to find something that makes sense Thank you! Subscribed!

Made my day hahaha great tutorial

awesome tutorial very easy to follow. thorough and detailed :)

You are like the bob ross of making music. Thanks a lot.
Great tutorial! I've been trying to design bass sounds in Live using drum racks, Simpler and Sampler and this tutorial has definitely helped me shape my bass sounds. Great job and thanks for posting.
Tutorial that explains what to do and why, so important, sick tutorial, thank you!!
dude you brought up so many mistakes that I have been making without even knowing it! Great vid
What a solid tutorial
Glad ya enjoyed it.
Nice tutorial, congratulations bro! I am going to design this bass myself tonight and see if I can take my favourite changes to make it more custom. Keep on the good work teaching beginners like me how to make good sounds.
Wow! Very good stuff! I`m impressed! Thank you for the useful video!

Great to hear!
Best tut yet!
dude, i'm only like 1:46 in but for some reason i really like ur style of presentation, i'll keep my final comment till i'm done w/ the vid, but this is rad so far...9:25 still going strong :) one mistake, on the bass patch you pitch up 12 and down -12, on the sub you pitch up 12 and down +12. other than that...amazing tutorial all the way to the end!
That snare is amazing
Great vid. I don't use massive myself, but this video does give great general synthesis advice. Thanks!
Excellent video. Thanks for your help.
Very nice, thanks.

Thanks so much for all of your videos. That track reminds me of Eskmo or Amon Tobin.
Great video ! Thanks for sharing your knowledge !
Very clear and concise tutorial. It's clear to see why you're a certified Ableton instructor.
I'm teaching my mate how to produce in Live and I'll be showing him this tutorial.

Thanks for the knowledge, friend! Great tutorial.
Amazing Video, very easy to follow and i learned alot. Thank you(:
Really insane tut here

Ya! a tutorial on that funky wobble would be awesome!
Thank you! Very helpful!
13:55.... soo excited for 9 hahaha CURVED LOVE
Thanks man! Just what I need for a track
I always liked you because of the great empathic explanations and superb producing profficiency. But since the pig with the lipsticks, I adore you.

Dope tutorial and to be honest the fact you swear in it is kinda refreshing reminds me I'm not listening to a robot lmao.

Awesome vid. Very helpful....I keep forgetting about sidechaining
thanks a lot vespers learned something.
