    Good timing for me on this video. I just bought my Champion 2500 dual fuel. It is supposed to be here Friday. The Honda is great but just too big and heavy to lug around.

      Enjoy the new Champion - the weight was a big reason we went the Champion 2500. Have used it a few times and has been reliable - though we've only run it on propane so far.

    The nice thing about using propane is the extended run time than using gasoline. Unless you get an extended run gas tank to attach to your generator, you only have 1.1 gallons of gas. I understand the btu's per gallon of propane is less, but a 20 lb tank has 4.7 gallons and a 30 lb tank has 6.8 gallons. You can run for quite a while using propane.

      Thanks for the comment Roy. That was our thinking when we made the decision to go with a propane capable generator. We go camping with a 20lb spare tank for the generator. Plus (though we have to get some adapters), there is the possibility of also tapping into the propane tanks that are on our trailer as well.

      Two years later, it's as good as new. We take it out whenever we boondocks and fire it up every so often so it's ready if we need backup power at the house.

    I've read most of the comments and I'd like to add a step that no one is mentioning.
    After or before filling the generator with the proper amount of oil, it's a good idea to add a small amount (1/4 teaspoon) of oil to the cylinder before fueling for the the initial start-up. Remove the spark plug and add a small amount, then pull start the generator several times without fuel to lubricate the cylinder and rings, then follow the break-in process as described in the owner's manual. It will smoke a little for first tank of fuel and then stop. You'll extend the life of the motor by adding a little oil through the spark plug hole. If you add too much oil to the top of the piston, it will foul out the spark plug. A little soak in gasoline will clean the fouled plug. Re-install the clean spark plug and attempt to start the generator again.

    I just got one of these - model number change (200961), but still dual fuel 2500 watt. Followed all the directions, Runs extremely quiet - very impressive. The primary purpose of this generator will be to power a gas furnace, TV's, a few lights, and internet routers - in a 3,800 sq ft. home,. After the 2021Texas February Freezout I decided never again. We have a large see through nat gas fireplace, so we didn't have to burn the furniture to keep from freezing. But even at that, temp's got into the low 40's inside! and -3F outside. Ran 8 to 12 hours with NO ELECTRICITY over 4 days of it, with maybe an hour here and there with power. Today, I did the test after a lot of research. Fortunately that paid off, because this, as probably the majority of portable generators, use a "floating neutral" as opposed to 'bonded neutral'. The startup sequence of the furnace does not like, nor will it run the furnace on floating neutral nor on 'dirty power'. Made a plug for one of the outlets by jumpering the neutral and ground wire together. Now, it runs perfectly as a bonded neutral generator. I am literally amazed this small generator ran the gas furnace and it did it in the ECO Mode. It didn't even have to ramp up to get the blower fan running. Ran it through several cycles without a single problem. Will be completing the wiring with a single transfer switch. Great Shoutout to this little wonder machine!

      Running the break-in on mine now. I added an inexpensive hour-meter to track usage.
      First start on propane took 6-8 priming pulls. I have a small space heater connected, switching between fan and low heat to vary the load. Gonna switch to the fridge after 1 hour.
      Once started, it's super quiet (62-65 db at 5 feet, in Eco, running the space heater). And, as you mentioned, light-weight.
      Planning to use it to keep the groceries from spoiling on those 2-3 times we lose power for a day or two. Propane fireplaces keep us warm, not sure what we'll do when it's warm out.

    Here's something to know about a dual fuel generator. If it fails to start on gasoline because someone let the fuel sit in the tank too long it will usually start on propane. And also this is why you want a dual fuel generator and because when everyone sells out a gasoline in an emergency usually propane will be around longer, propane never goes bad, you don't have to treat the fuel and your generator will last two to three times longer running on propane.

    • @ThePlacesWhereWeGo

      Thanks - we were looking for something that would give us the kind of flexibility mentioned in your comment. Seems like there were more benefits going this route than with a gas only generator. So far, so good.

      Only problem is IF a very large area were shut off (again) of no power, propane might be equally, if not more difficult to find. The Texas Feb freeze out proved that. Hours long lines waiting for the very few re-fill stations. The typical trade a tank bins you see everywhere, were long depleted within 6 hours of massive power outages.
      I'm lucky and have access to almost unlimited gasoline. (if needed) Not car gas but aviation fuel.

    Great video! I had one of these 2500's. On propane it took 10 to 20 pulls EVERY SINGL TIME. I tried thier help line, the told me to take it to a mechanic to check it out. Aint doing that on a brand new generator, took it back to home depot. I have a champion 3400 watt that I use with propane and it works great.

    • @ThePlacesWhereWeGo

      Seems we hear that propane does take more pulls on this one versus gas, though we've not used gas on the unit. It is convenient at the campground when we haul a propane tank with us - 10 pulls about right with our experience. We thought about the larger unit but landed on this version which either of us could lift and carry as needed. Thanks for watching!

      Excellent - were you running on gasoline? We wonder if the more pulls we typically need for our start might be due to running on propane. Not a huge number of pulls - but at least a couple more than the instructions indicate.

      My only starting tip would be is to open the propane valve slightly as your connecting the hose to the generator, thus filling the hose with propane, so you don't have to pull so many times to get fuel to the generator. Sounds dangerous, but it works. Please do this in a well-ventilated area!

      We've only used this generator with propane. We have a quick connect on our propane tank that we attach to the generator. The only extra steps are connecting the propane hose before starting the generator, and then disconnecting after we power down the generator. Hopefully we're not missing a step but after several years, this is what we do and the generator still hums along nicely.

    If you get something called a easy start/ soft start for your air conditioner, then the Champian 2500 will run your air conditioner no problem, because it's not the running, it's the startup surge that's the problem

    • @ThePlacesWhereWeGo
      @ThePlacesWhereWeGo  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We've only operated the unit on propane. The instructions say to pull 3 to 5 times with the unit on choke to prime the engine and then another pull in the run position to get it going. I've not yet had the engine start with that few pulls. It's been more in the 8 to 12 pulls total - have found it helpful to pull more than 5 times in the choke position so far. Good news is that the unit has started up every time we've used it, but with a few more pulls than the instructions indicate.

  • @KstrSM15
    @KstrSM15 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I bought this gen for the propane option. After several failed attempts and a replacement (averaged 50 - 70 pulls) I was ready to give up. On a hunch, I put about 1 cup of gasoline in the tank and it started on the 2nd pull. So, I switched it to propane and it started on the 2nd pull. It runs my 13k A/C (with Microair installed) fine and is relatively quiet. But, I won't buy another one and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

    • @ThePlacesWhereWeGo
      @ThePlacesWhereWeGo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow - that's a lot of pulls. So far, we've only used the propane option and have taken the generator on several trips. Probably average about 10 pulls to get it going on our end and like the option of the dual fuel. Next time we take it out, we'll see if a few more pulls than the recommended number while in the choke position makes a difference once we flip the selector to propane. Thanks for stopping by to watch.

    You cut between 10:12 and 10:13. He says it only took, "about 8 pulls" but the video shows 5 pulls - so why edit the video if it was only cutting 3 pulls out? Inquiring minds want to know. (ha ha) I plan to receive mine in the next few days so I'm taking a survey to see how I do with mine.

    • @ThePlacesWhereWeGo
      @ThePlacesWhereWeGo  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, took a few more pulls than the manual said it would. We've taken the generator on two camping trips this summer and each time had about the same experience - a few more pulls on the choke process and a few more pulls to start her up versus the number noted in the manual. But still, it's started up every time. We made the edit, because we didn't think folks would want to watch pull after pull after pull after pull after pull...etcetera. Thanks for watching - wishing you all the best on your new generator!

    If the champion 2500 watt generator has 18 to 20 startup amps it should run your RV rooftop air conditioner either the 13,500 or the 15,000 btu without the micro Air Easy start installed on the ac. Someone said that the i gen 2200 watt Westinghouse brand they said on gasoline would run a RV roof top air conditioner. I've not seen the test on this so far I just heard it in the comment section say the i gen 2200 westing house could run a rooftop RV AC. Also the hotter it is outside the harder it is to start one of the RV roof top Air conditioners. And usually most guys will get the AC fan running and wait a few or several minutes and then turn on the compressor to cool.

      For future reference , you don’t just dump the entire bottle of oil in. You dump in about 3/4, check the oil level, and adjust from there. This guy just dumped it in, never checked the oil level, tilted the unit, all are wrong. These engines are designed so that they cannot be grossly overfilled. If you dump in too much oil it leaks out the oil fill hole. It only works like that if you don’t tilt the engine on its side as you fill it.
