A common misconception referring to the London Oratory as the 'Brompton Oratory' - it isn't, never mind it's location 'Brompton Road'. I'm forever hopeful you asked permission before you filmed given it is correct to do so and never be disappointed if that is denied given it is a place of worship. It was an otherworldly experience back in the '60s compared to the crowded 21st century experience - to wonder the aisles with often no one else there to break the silence. Attend any one of the great liturgical events in one's lifetime or all of them many times over should one be so lucky, one seemingly exits this church with a great sense of inner happiness and contentment regardless one's faith, denomination, or otherwise none at all.
I stayed at Bryce Canyon in April 2023 (coming from Australia). I only had one night and I was so excited to hike the area. But there were large snow falls prior to my visit, and I was disappointed to find that I could not do any hiking at Bryce Canyon. It was so spectacular though. However, the path around Mossy cove was clear of snow and I did get to go there and do that hike. It's a lovely area. I'm excited to be coming back later this year, to do those hikes that I missed.
Southampton during the daytime (and probably the nighttime) is a perfectly safe place to be. The only time you would want to be indoors is at 11pm on a Friday night (kicking out time for pubs), and even then, the only danger is from some drunk teenagers barfing on your shoes. If people are looking at you, it is probably that they are wondering why you are bothering to carry a GoPro on a stick in such a nondescript city (i.e., you probably just look a bit odd to them, but they bear you no malice). A quick look on the internet shows that crime in Southampton is half the UK average, and even then the UK is a pretty safe place.
It’s not a war zone 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
Was a war zone? Apologies if we got something wrong in our narration - and always appreciate guidance from locals and those in the know. Cheers!
I have lived in Southampton all my life, and it's always nice to have Americans in our city because you are lovely people. I thought you may have gone to the Mayflower memorial where the Mayflower sailed to America from, or even the American D-Day wall where a lot of GI's wrote their names in the brickwork prior to embarkation for the invasion of Normandy in 1944. The city centre is reasonably safe, but if you venture into the inner city areas, it does become less safe and there are some dodgy individuals about, especially towards the evening time, but they aren't very tourist orientated areas anyway. Anyway, it was nice of you to video your experiences, and I do hope you have a lovely cruise, and you come back to us.
That's so lovely - thank you. We were made aware of many more historical areas, monuments, and museums in Southampton that we'll have to experience on a future visit. We're confident there will be a future sailing or two on our travels departing from Southampton. Cheers!
@@MrBobDobaline wheres the American D day wall ?
@@MrBobDobaline ive never met any dodgy individuals in Soton….but i have stayed at a dodgy bed and breakfast where the bedroom carpet was sticky and there was dust on the cornflakes..
@ Down at the back of the De-vere Grand Harbour hotel (the Pyramid shaped hotel), it's a red bricked Victorian piece of wall.
@ I live in Bevois Valley, and believe me it's very dodgy.
Gaol is pronounced the same as jail
Thanks for that - we obviously didn't know that one and appreciate learning correct pronunciations. Thanks for stopping by to watch. Cheers!
@@morganetches3749 i know people that think its pronounced Goalgate….numpty’s..
Since when has Southampton been one of the most beloved cities?
We don't know for sure, but from the comments, the city appears to have some fans - and we enjoyed soaking up its history. And it's a reason for us to make more return trips to the UK to to compare and contrast which areas belong on the beloved list. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers!
Is it safe? Where do you think you are? The USA?
Cruise ports sometimes get interesting reputations - we were all good and enjoyed our time in Southampton. Cheers!
Go to see Benny Hills grave…
Adding that one to our "next visit" list. We enjoy visiting cemeteries too - thanks!
@ theres a Jewish cemetery there too ..
I love Southampton….ive lost count of the times ive been there…always wanted to live there…
Wonderful history there - kept us very interested. Cheers!
One of the UK's nicer cities. Even living there is not rediculously expensive.
We would have liked to have at least another day or two to explore - looking forward to a future visit.
I was a student at Southampton Uni. The Uni made possibly the most expensive financial error ever. The Uni invented the fibre optic cable but failed to patent it. You tell me what that patent is worth today. Literally £ Billions.
Wow - there's some trivia. Thanks for stopping by. Cheers!
Think your spidy sense may have been working overtime. Southampton is a safe town to wander around and visit. Maybe there was a football match on?
We were definitely being followed. We do realize Southampton doesn't have a reputation for danger and we enjoyed our time there. But we felt safer once around more people. And we hope to return. Cheers!
@@ThePlacesWhereWeGoI'm sorry you had to experience that. Hopefully you will have a better visit next time.
14:17 If you followed that path up to the right of the window you looked through you would find the Tudor House Museum which holds a Tudor garden. 23:38 That face you noticed, there are about 20+ faces down that street, they're all hidden so you need to keep an eye out. There is also a map of all the commissioned street art in Southampton. Including mosaics, benches and charity statues. There are other things that may interest you that you may not have noticed. For instance the D-Day graffiti, the messages the American troops wrote on the walls before they were shipped out to Normandy.
Yes, clearly there is lots more for us to explore on our next visit to the city. Thanks for pointing out more areas for us to add to our future exploration. Cheers!
Liverpool is way better 👍
Ah, we've been there too - had a wonderful time in both places.
I have a daughter who is studying in Southampton so have visited quite a few times. I would say it's generally a safe place although it's not really a tourist destination more a working port. As you mentioned it was heavily bombed in the 2nd world war so a lot of the buildings are post war and a little tired so it's not going to win any beauty awards.
We wouldn't hesitate to return again - just had a strange situation when we found ourselves wandering in an area that wasn't trafficked by others and we were clearly being followed. But, we soon made our way around people and all was good. We really enjoyed the history of the town too. Cheers!
Beautifully done. Thank you!
Ah, thanks so much. It was a memorable visit.
What are your travel tips for visiting Southampton UK?
Southampton is losing it's place as the cruise capital of Europe because of Portland in Dorset. It is the largest man made port in Europe, the third largest in the world (was the larest before China built two bigger). There are cruise liners that call at Portland that cannot go to Southampton because they are too big for the port. Nearly All cruise ships that go to and from Soutampton now call in at Portland in Dorset.
@@ThePlacesWhereWeGo go to the village of hamble…its lovely..catch the bus…and also go to Southsea, stay the night at the Queens Hotel..
@@ThePlacesWhereWeGo stay at the Grand Harbour hotel….lovely Jubbly.. Go to the Isle of Wight on the ferry from Soton pier or from Southsea…or just sit on the dock of the bay watching the time go away..Ryde ,Cowes and Sandown is nice..if you get bored go to Christchurch ,Mudeford and Bournemouth..and Hythe..
So brave! We find it hard to travel without a plan!!!! This is awesome!
An atypical adventure for us - we usually have a solid plan - but once in awhile, we just...go and see what happens. Cheers!
This is quite an adventure.
We enjoyed the experience. Thanks for stopping by to watch!
What cold weather boondocking tips do you have? Leave a comment below
We did our boondocking in a Ram Promaster 2500. We used electric blankets starting them up 5-minutes before bed and set to go off automatically after about 30-minutes. They ran, using low power, off our 1500-watt lithium battery station-as did our morning coffee machine. And our battery would recharge off of our driving and was never at risk.
I like the electric blanket idea - we'll need to give that a look. Plus, we think we were way too cautious and likely could have run the furnace on a low setting too. We'll need to get back out there in the cold weather and try the experience again. Cheers!
I just run the furnace in that situation. At least to take the edge off the morning or evening. If the battery gets low just start the truck and let the pickup charge it, or your propane powered gen will charge it back as well. Great video and nice soundtrack... it was cool to see state street! Happy New Year!
Agreed - in retrospect, we were way too cautious. So we'll get out there again and use your tips on our next cold weather camping opportunity. Cheers!
This is my Families Ranch, well it was! I remember getting to visit with my grandparents when it was closed because it was literally our families land and history! So cool to see it on TH-cam!
Wow - how fascinating. We really enjoyed our visit. Hopefully you can visit again in the future. We were impressed that the park service preserved this history.
At 7:13, the area is so beautiful. Is it close to Mesquite Flat San Dunes?
Ah, the area at 7:13 is Pismo Beach, California-about 5.5 hours west of Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes. We included that footage because we were discussing the Pismo Dunes during that part of the video. Both are worth seeing if you are exploring California, but they are separate trips for sure. Thanks for stopping by to watch.
Hidden secret is right! What a neat video tour!! Thanks for this. By chance, do you know what happened to Moorpark's old train depot? Was it relocated or demoed ?
As far as we know, the Moorpark Train Depot did not survive - that one would have also made an interesting historic site. Merry Christmas!
My mother just passed away. FDR signed Executive Order 9066 on her 14th birthday. She never talked about Manzanar with bitterness, just as a place that was part of her childhood. Amazingly, she had a yearbook, with a picture of the guard tower in it. A Project Director by the name of Ralph P. Merritt wrote about his hope for the students, which included …”I hope you may say that Manzanar was an experience worth living, where the important realities of life were made clear and where there was time and opportunity to prepare for participation in the work of winning the peace based on tolerance, understanding and good will. The graduates of Manzanar have a great contribution to make in determining the kind of world that is to come after the war”. My mom married a man who became a doctor, raised 6 kids who all graduated college and married descendants of immigrants of other countries…Europe, Mexico/Native American, Philippines. I never met my uncle from my dad’s side, as he died trying to liberate France as part of the 442nd battalion -a Japanese unit. Hope to make a pilgrimage to Manzanar in the near future. Thank you for putting this video together so I can get an idea of what it was like.
In May (2025) I and my 17 yr old grandson are going on a five week roadtrip and Manzanar is a stop I have planned for this trip. He is a WWII but didn't know anything about Manzanar. It should be an eye opener for him. Thanks for the video.
That sounds fantastic. If he is interested in WWII and if your road trip will take you to Southern California, you might look into visiting the Battleship USS Iowa in San Pedro or the USS Midway in San Diego. Happy travels and thanks for stopping by to watch.
I think this is my favoritist ep. yet. Just as you two...many a time I've driven by and said, "we need to stop in sometime". I like that you point out it's a day trip, too. Is there a full service restaurant/cafe? Fun vid! CG
There is a full service restaurant on premises, though we didn't stop in there to eat as the morning breakfast was plentiful. We have a lot of similar places that comprise our "need to stop in sometime" list. One by one. Happy holidays!
I think it was my lad who gave you the tickets a British lad ?
Yes, we noticed a British accent. Tickets were much appreciated and we hope to be back to catch more action at the Iceoplex. Cheers!
Great vid! Very informative and visuals. The kids definitely looked like they had fun, too. Happy Holidays ~
It was a fun holiday outing and particulary enjoyed by the littles. Cheers!
Also meant to say that Westminster Cathedral has a lift where you can go up the campanile or bell tower and has some great views ! I found a video of Once in Royal David's City at Midnight Mass a few years ago . The Chief Concelebrant is Cardinal Vincent Nichols , the Archbishop of Westminster . th-cam.com/video/8xeZOnW2v6k/w-d-xo.htmlsi=AqW_wVRASZkTSbqW
Thanks for sharing - We'll need to put a visit back to Westminster Cathedral to go up to the bell tower on our next visit. Cheers!
“Somewhere in the middle of nowhere”. Ha! I love it! This vid packed full of valuable info, especially for hiking in the trails. That road on the last shot out of the park seemed sketch!!!! Another informative vid, for sure !!!!
It was quite the surprise to find ourselves on that thin piece of dirt road - and it might the day just a bit more memorable. Cheers!
Very informative. I could see your travels being a must watch for those headed that way ! Fun watch!! CameraGuy for CaliKim
Thanks for checking it out - we’re hopeful the info we share is helpful to viewers as well as a source of inspiration for things to do. Cheers!
Where did you pickup the bikes at?
We got our first bikes at a bike station at the parking area near the first mission we visited. They are distributed by BCycle San Antonio with rental stations throughout the away. More info at their website: sanantonio.bcycle.com
The wind is every day starts about 3 o’clock
It was pretty fierce during our visit. Thanks for stopping by to watch.
so its a gated communnity?
Well, a gated RV park. The gates do close up late afternoon. We just stayed for a couple of nights while visiting nearby Pinnacles National Park for hiking.
thats not a camp ground its a rv park for seniors
We sometimes err in using campgrounds and RV parks synonymously. A place we stayed while visitng nearby Pinnacles, and family friendly. Thanks for watching.
Looks really nice.
Yes, a great RV park close to Pinnacles. Glad we found it. Thanks for stopping by to watch.
Let me start out by saying that I loved the video. I visited this park several time in my life, and have even camped here a couple of times, and it was a really great capture of the parks trails and tranquility. Having lived my entire life in California, I want to point out a possible mistaken identity. From what I could see in the video, I believe all the birds in the video were Turkey Vultures. TVs would have a five-ish foot long wingspan and a Condor would have almost double that, at a nine-ish foot long wingspan. The Condor generally having some white-ish color under the shoulder and along the leading edge of each wing, with black feathers, where the TV has mostly black color and the feathers appear dark silver or grey when stretched for gliding. Either way, thank you for this video, it reminded me of times past and I even still recognized some of the places on the trails. Well done.
Thanks for pointing out the information about the birds. We really weren't sure but were assuming they were condors as we were at the area known where they are seen. The birds were only captured with an iphone camera on the video so it was hard to do them justice. Thanks so much for your comments and for stopping by to watch. Happy travels!
Nice that it was an easy hook-up! Great job putting on the proper shoes and gear to do the hike. Thank you for taking us along on this hike. -Jim & Michelle
Thanks for stopping by to watch. Happy travels!
This looks absolutely spectacular my friend! Stunning cinematography 🔥🔥
Thanks for stopping by to watch. It's a hidden gem in our national park system.
I just completed the Camino Frances in Santiago de Compostela. Just learned about our own Mission walk in California. I would love to take on a few stages at a time on Our own Mission walk.
Congrats on completing the big pilgrimage walk overseas. We are slowly, over time, planning to similarly tackle stages of the California Mission trail. We've walked to three of the missions so far, much more ahead of us. Buen Camino!
I pick my time in Redding carefully. It can be HOT!
Good advice. We've noticed hot days in Northern California can stay stifling late into the evening as there isn't the benefit of a cooling ocean breeze that we have at our location in Southern California. Thanks for stopping by to watch.
Any ducks out there?
Our view of the water was from a distance - two Anaheim Ducks fan however. Thanks for stopping by to watch.
@ lol thank you
It's true that you can't really see the pupfish at Devils hole but, I was thrilled to visit nonetheless. It has to be this way in order to protect these little guys. Before the cages and fences, there used to be vandalism that threatened the fish. I did see the ash meadows amargosa pupfish along the boardwalk. Also worth checking out is Shoshone, where they've worked to restore the habitat for the Shoshone pupfish, and I did see them! I usually visit Ash Meadows in July or August, and usually I'm the only one there, but I love the heat!
We'll check out the Shoshone pupfish habitat on our next visit to the area. Thanks for the tip and thanks for stopping by to watch!
@ when you go, be sure to check out Dublin Gulch, old abandoned miner cave homes, dug into the sides of the little buttes nearby. Apparently, folks lived in these til the 1970s! Only one Motel, the Shoshone Inn which I would go back to Shoshone just to stay there again a really nice place. Of course, nearby Tecopa and China Date Ranch, (great Date Shakes,) and is the trailhead to the Amargosa River hike….ok, I’m gonna watch some more of your vids!
God bless you both!
Thanks for stopping by to watch.
The Los Patos River in Barahona, Dominican Republic is much shorter and more beautiful than that
Looks like both rivers measure out at 61 meters - It would be cool to see the river in the Dominican Republic someday. Thanks for informing us about another short river. Cheers!
Thank goodness the insects died down lol!! We don’t need the amenities so we would be ok. Oh but the insects could go lol!
