One of the reasons why Sewer Shark looks so good is because it was directed by John Dykstra, who was the special effects coordinator and miniature model maker for Star Wars: A New Hope and worked at Industrial Light and Magic . He did special effects for many different Hollywood movies and still works in Hollywood today. Just about everything in Sewer Shark was made with miniature scale models, puppets, and practical effects.

Star Control II on the 3DO had new graphics and sound.
And the FZ-1 model of the 3DO was a high end model, which is why it was so expensive at launch. It has superior sound to the other consoles around at the time. Playing Road Rash on an FZ-1 model that is connected to a good amp with good quality cables impressed me in the 00s when I first bought a 3DO.

I developed a game based on the 3DO. It's intended to give that look and feel of an early 90's 3D game...as you say, when there was a sense of mystery and intrigue regarding the future of 3D graphics. The game is called "Verzaken!" and is available on Steam. It's intentionally cheesy - anyone nostalgic for the 3DO will enjoy it. And it contains several easter eggs :)

Not to mention the concept of the interactive movie something that to this day hasn't fully been realized

The appeal of Night Trap was that it was so awesome to see FMV in 1992-1993 on a console. Compared to what limited animations were available on a SNES or Genesis/MD cartridge, seeing real people in the game WAS the future (or so we thought). Now, the only appeal to play it is for nostalgia or as a historical piece of how the ESRB was created.

Never had a 3DO but ALWAYS wanted one.I would play the Demo unit at Macy’s over and over again. I also rented a unit from a local video store where I came across my first Horror Videogame Killing Time. I loved Killing Time so much. I even hunted down the rights holder to look into a rerelease. She responded that she was going to do a remake or HD version, can’t remember which. I also love Quarantine, the first car combat I ever played.

  • @JMFSpike

I always wanted a 3DO. Yes, please do more videos on the 3DO! Also, please check out Lucienne's Quest. It was the only real JRPG on the system, and it looks like a pretty damn decent one. The only other console the game was on is the Saturn, but only in Japan.
I think the 3DO was a really great system hardware wise, but it was just too damn expensive, lacking in 3rd party support, and lacking in AAA titles. They had some 3rd party support and a few big name titles, just not enough. They tried hard though, so I have much respect to the former 3DO company for that. People forget that this console was suppose to be the next big thing when it was released. All the experts thought this was the next console to dominate the market.

I’m surprised there wasn’t a 3DO version of Final Fight, the system could have used a good beat-em-up. As far as Plumbers Don’t Wear Ties, it’s good for some cheap laughs, but nothing more.

Amerigo Costa po'ed and need for speed were better on PSX, road rash was more or less equal across the 32bit systems. Wing Commander was better on 3do IMO. Shockwave was better on 3do. Gex was best on Saturn IMO. Not many games were better on 3do. Best home console version of wolf 3d being a Mac port had increased resolution and sprites and the music the jag version was missing.

I see the thumbnail contains the blonde from Plumbers Don't Wear Ties. I feel like it wouldn't be a proper rundown of the 3DO without mentioning that glorified slide show!
I think the problem with the 3DO (and why Sony didn't go for it) was because both the software was licensed out to third parties and so was the hardware. This allowed the games to be cheaper than titles for other platforms but the hardware has to be more expensive. If a company like Sony were to do with the 3DO what they did with the PS1, the Sony 3DOs might have been cheaper on the hope that they could sell the console as a loss leader, but that would never happened as Sony titles would have been more expensive that titles from other publishers.
Sewer Shark reminds me of Microcosm. The 3DO could have been a good platform had it been cheaper. It's certainly one I really want to try, but then again, I kind of like platforms that are a little rough around the edges... I'm an Amiga fan after all!

I think the issue of whether it is reasonable for a game to impose a learning curve or "getting used" to the controls is not one with a simple one-size-fits-all answer.
Sometimes you have to learn new, perhaps counter-intuitive, control schemes because the functionality they enable justifies it.
Also, just what IS "intuitive" anyway? Think, for example, of the upright/inverted debate. I cut my 3D teeth on the N64, and there most games came with "inverted" controls as default or even only option. I'm not only used to them, but in my opinion they make more sense in the context of an FPS, than the "upright" Y axis that seems to be preferred nowadays. I find newer games that impose that type of control to be frustrating (although that's only one gripe I have with modern fps controls), and also because they don't tune the "inverted" version well.
Well, this discussion could go on forever, but the point is, intuitiveness depends on a mixture of human nature, culture and personal idiosincrasy, so that's one aspect to consider.
Now, apart from whether the controls or play style are novel or stablished, is the button mapping, tuning and even the functions provided a good way to interact with the game's world? Do they enable an efficient translation of the player's will onto the on-screen action?
Did they think things out or did they obviously just slap things toghether in the most unimaginative way?
I'll go back again with my experience on the N64: The controller for that system is notoriously different compared to anything you could have considered standard back then or today. Many people rant like crazy about how bad it was, but I think they are speaking nonsense, particularly when most of them praise the DualShock as the best thing on earth, about which I can find a few important flaws, such as the ludicrous position of the analog sticks, the stupid plastick cross in the middle getting in the way of my comfort, the unintuitiveness of the symbols instead of letters scheme (some call it genius though, I guess it's a matter of flavor in this case), and the nonsensical way many games assign functions to the buttons, not to mention every game just does whatever they want.
With the N64 they managed to stablish a sort of non-spoken agreement about how A abd B were to be used in menus, for example, or maybe they did include guidelines to that effectin the development documentation, I'm not sure.
The point want to bring forward with all of this is that, when it came to N64 games that were ports of PC or PlayStation games, or just general multiplatform games (which the system didn't receive many of, and most of them were PS ports anyway), I always found interesting and annoying how they unnecesarily FUCKED UP the controls unnecesarily, and my conclusion was that they were just lazily mirroring their PS and PC practices and seemingly refused to acknowledge even the most obvious and easily solved problems.
I guess the platform was not the highest priority when it came to port quality, but then again, I guess the PS counterparts didn't control much better either.
Also, menu style and navigation in games by many third parties that did mostly PS development used to stink quite a bit compared to Nintendo and Rare's games.
There's no universal answer, but it must be answered on a per game basis.
It all boils down to the quality of the design and how involvedly or lazily they were implemented.
Sometimes you have to wonder how such turds could possibly pass any reasonable playtest.

3DO Doom was a rushjob due to executive incompetence. There was only one programmer tasked with converting the game to the 3DO and was under a 10-week deadline to do it since the company managing the port had little experience with game conversions and had false assumptions over how the conversion could be done. Look up info on the game's programmer, Rebecca Heineman, as she offered a full story on the nightmares she dealt with trying to program the game on such a tight deadline.

I’d say The Horde, Immercenary, and Star Controller 2 were some of my favorites just out of the pure fun. The first two I listed seem to never get any love on the internet which saddens me. If you haven’t burned and played these games I’d say give them a try. The Daedalus encounter was also decent for its use of live action. I forget the name but there was a Sherlock Holmes game with a bit of fun to be had also that perhaps a Brit would laugh at wholeheartedly lol

Around the mid 90s when the 3DO was on the ropes, they started allowing adult titles from Vivid Video and others, usually soft core porn. And yeah, at US game stores like Electronics Boutique and others, they actually carried these. They were all at the absolute top shelves, which I believe was based on the reasoning that kids who were too young to reach them meant they wouldn't be buying them.

Give Killing Time another chance, you need to find the invitation to get into the mansion where the game actually starts.

Please try Star Control 2. The 3DO has the best version of starcon2 with cut scenes and voice. You can actually get those for the PC rerelease ur-quan masters, now. It's a space exploration game, a genre long forgotten until the rise of the indie developers. You fly around in your space ship, mining planets and making contact to other races, slowly building your rebellion against the empire. Battles are 1on1, with each race having a unique type of space ship and in the battles it really shows that the game is from the same guys who made Archon.

I bought this console second-hand around 25 years ago and it still works! unfortunately the guy that sold it to me din't take great care with the CDs and they were damaged; I can't finish Crash and Burn and Killing time has half the garden labyrith loose it visual graphic (but you can still navigate through! yes I'm persistant) but the Dungeon and Dragon game works well. My control is getting old, and one feature you didn't talk about is the second control plug in the controler, making multiple players a possiblility! My brother played on a giant screen in a bar Road Rash with 8 players split-screen!

I read somewhere that nintendo bought the factory for the 3DO M2 which makes sense because NGC was originally called dolphin, which was best tech demo for the M2. also panasonic made another console after with nintendo the GameQ they also supplied the optical components, partly why a gamecube never dies.

I had the Goldstar 3DO as a kid and enjoyed it immensely. I always rented games 1st to try them out and sure, I came across some bad ones (as with any system) but it also introduced me to new things and some great graphics for the time. Give the "Wing Commander" series a try starting with WC 3. It had an interactive story with FMV and tight space combat along with Mark Hamill and other notable actors playing roles. The 1st Need for Speed was also released on this system and was great.
The best game ever has to be "Putt Putt Goes to the Parade" obviously LOL

The Goldstar now "LG" 3do version was notorious for the drive ribbon to crack and fail. As at thte time there was no replacement to buy you could repair if you had expert soldering skills( i DO have them) but the room that was to be used would make the unit unable to be put back together. I tossed it for a modded Ps able to read burnt disc's. If the 3do was to continue Playstation would have had a serious problem in years to come. Loved my 3DO till it died!

You must give Killing Time a chance. The intro map is annoying, and the framerate/controls take getting used to, but it is an ambitious fps of its time. Definitely worth a serious playthrough.

Playing games just from floppy disks and later CD Rom. I always loved playing games on a PC so i hope one day you make a video about it.

I remember this system being laughably expensive. One of those kind of prices even a kid knew better than to ask their parents for. I was only interested is Super Street Fighter II Turbo, as that game never came out for the 16-bit systems. Then it came out for MS-DOS and there was no need for the 3DO.

3DO worth playing these days? Well, maybe 3DO-exclusive games, since most of the games made on the 3DO eventually ported either to Playstation and Saturn later on, and the FMV games such as Dragon's Lair eventually ported to DVD.

Your _PAL_ FZ-1 model did not go out because it was poorly made. You gradually burnt it out via the voltage because you didn't have it connected to a voltage step down transformer. Different regions around the world use varying levels of voltage and to adhere to these changes in regions, you have to check the voltage on the back (or bottom) of your console to determine which step down transformer you have to purchase. Also, you should be happier with the FZ-10. I own both the FZ-1 and FZ-10 and side by side on two TV's you can clearly see a difference. This is because the FZ-10 had an upgraded graphics chip, so it's actually slightly less grainy and choppy than the FZ-1.

there is a great cheat in the Sega version of Sewer Shark if someone has the second controler he can control the ship. this makes the game alot easier as one can shoot and the second can be the pilot watching for directions and recharge points. This makes it easier to get to solar city

A fine system overall, if you get the FZ-1 or 10, but such a strange marketing strategy back then. Hawkins licensed the hardware to multiple companies, as you stated, which led to the odd situation of competing against himself.

I've not tried my own 3DO in a while, but my dad's no longer works. I believe it could be fixed with a full recap. Capacitors don't last forever after all. If yours won't even turn on though, the problem might be a little more serious.
