    So glad to see my spare Lynx being put to good use. Great video Top Hat Gaming Man and so proud to have been a part of this.
    Klax was one of my favourite on the system along with Rampage!

    Man, that was classic Jack Tramiel. Make a supplier dependent on him, find some legal loophole to withhold payments, bleed them dry, and when they're at their most desperate, buy them out lock, stock, and barrel for a song!

    • @segaunited3855
      @segaunited3855 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Jack "Satan" Tramiel. Not only did he cause the Collapse of Atari and tried to run the game industry into the ground during 1984, he's ALSO why the NES came out.
      Nintendo approached Atari in '84 about helping distribute Famicom in America as the NAVS(Nintendo Advanced Video System). not only did Tramiel snub Nintendo, he then turned around and STOLE that Moniker for Atari 7800! The Atari 7800 Advanced Video System.

    My favorite Lynx memory is getting a Model 2 version in 1991 and a Comlynx cable to compliment my original Model 1, and two copies of Warbirds. I would take them in to work with me and I'd play against an actual pilot. And blast him out of the sky almost every time. We spent our lunchtime a couple times a week zipping through the clouds trying to gun each other down. I loved the sound of my bullets hitting his plane coming out of his Lynx, and that great sound as his plane spun out and into the ground. So much fun!

    Believe it or not, the Lynx sold really well in Japan, at around 100.000 units. I even have a friend from there that he, and many of his buddies do tournaments with it :)

      In a country with the pop of Japan, who also herald from a massive consumerist culture, I wonder if 100,000 units can be considered "a success".

    I had a lynx ! I never got too many games for it though - I think that I had a snes and a1200 at the time and prefered to buy full games for those. I was just learning about programming at the time on my amiga and would jsut wow at the power of the hardware sub-integer scaling on the lynx handheld.

    It was quite populair around my neighbourhood, it was either gameboy or a lynx.
    It had some fun games and even some of the best arcade ports (klaxx, rygar, rampage, toki)

    One of my personal favorite Lynx games, even if I'm not sure if it'll make the Top 50 is Pinball Jam. For a 1990's handheld, it does a really good job of recreating a couple of classic pinball cabinets, including one of my favorite pinball machines ever, Elvira and the Party Monsters. It still stands out to me as a really good pinball game, especially when compared to others at the time.

    Love it, Chips Challenge, Qix, Bill N Ted, Stun Runner, Gauntlet...lot of good on the go games with MUCH better screen AND sound than regular gameboy of same time period. I got mine late in life also, and to my suprise (it was an eBay purchase with NO game included...or so they said) it came with Lemmings inside the slot!!! I couldn't believe when I looked it up it was on of the rarer games for it, probably only dam decent luck I've had in anything in life.

    I always dreamed of owning a Lynx, but sadly, still have never tracked one down. I should just bite the bullet and buy one from eBay. I remember drooling over the pictures of Lynx games in the Sears and JC Penney's catalogs my younger brother and I would browse at our grandparents' house. I remember being awestruck at color graphics on a handheld, compared to my Game Boy, and thinking games like Gates of Zendocon and Electro Cop looked so awesome and futuristic that there was no way Atari could lose. Unfortunately, that was not the case. Still, a technical marvel for its day, and certainly a system worth a look. Good video. I'd never seen some of the prototype images of the Lynx, so that was very interesting.

    I had one, my cousin had one. That was it for the people I knew who had one which is a shame because it was a great system,it was safe to say between us we had most of the games available for it. Unfortunately the Lynx had a problem which I had many times, the power supply connection on the system would break and it happened to me a few times with the original Lynx system. Lynx 2 was a better model but was much fatter, it also did away with the game card being entered via the side to being entered on the back.
    Another great video top hat gaming man, I'm thinking your next handheld video should be the tiger gizmondo which has an awesome story behind it.

    The lynx model 1 defined my childhood. I got one of these in the early 90s as a Christmas present and used it for many many years. I still had it up to 5 years ago when I moved and found it still in its box and it brought a smile to my face that was short lived when I realised the batteries I had stupidly left in for 10 years or more had leaked destroying the electronics and screen. Wish I still had it working best memories of playing California games, blue lighting, a spaceship one that u went thru teleporters shooting stuff and batman which I hated as a kid cause it was so hard lol. Was a awsome device that I used on many car trips with my parents just remember to bring a shitload of batteries with it lol it chewed them like crazy. Thx for the vid awsome memories of my childhood wish i still had one of these. I'd prefer one of these over my ps4 any day because of nostalgia that this thing would bring if I still had a working one. I never had a Sega, gameboy or anything like that but all my friends that did when I was a kid would always be in awe of the lynx, none of them had one and the fact it had a coloured screen was a huge deal back then. Such good memories

    I had one of these when I was 4 or 5 around '97-'98. Before I got my Game Boy Color. Pretty sure it was a hand me down from my cousins or they let me borrow it for a long time. Never knew what system this was since it was locked in my childhood memories. Re-discovered it as a teenager through emulation but never actually tried to run anything. Finally got around to getting a Lynx emulator on the Wii set up. Booted up each ROM until I found the games that I remember. I played the SHIT out of Checkered Flag and Scrapyard Dog. 23 years later and the memories came flooding back. Crazy stuff.

    I think the problem with the Lynx was its rather funky control scheme. Usually with handhelds, the controls are pretty self-explanatory and you knew where to hold the system. With the Lynx, it varied and it was rather confusing as you never knew which way to hold the system when the game started

    Yes, it is worth playing. But it is better with earphones, stereo. Also you will be better off with it plugged into the wall. I still have the one I originally bought way back when, and not too long ago found some new games for it. Three of which I have not yet opened. I also have the Atari case, and the very useful sunscreen that clips on. As far as I'm aware it is the only handheld that was ever designed for both left and right handed people.

    i have collected for the Lynx for many years and have the 72 commercial titles released, but it is not 16 bit, it does have 2 x 8 bit chips but its not the same as being the old fashioned 16 bit like the megadrive. it basically was an Amiga in your hand with the 512 pallette 0f 4096

      Indeed, I do not recall making any comparisons to the Super Nintendo or Megadrive, I just stated it was more powerful than the Gameboy and Game Gear. I agree on the Amiga stand point as I pointed out in the video, I found it amusing when someone on twitter told me I was silly comparing it to an Amiga rather than the ST.

  • @thomasdesposito

    One thing I was curious about was that if the lynx was a 16 bit system, why don't the games look as good as the Sega Genesis? Now the lynx actually has a much larger color palette than the Genesis but still doesn't look or perform as good as Genesis. The lynx games actually look similar to the game gear system (which I owned) and that's an 8 bit system. Then if you compare lynx to the nec turbo express that was a 16 bit system where the games are 10 times better than the lynx. But I'm not slamming the system as it was still ahead of its time and looks really cool to me. I definitely want to buy one soon. (preferably the 2nd model that Atari put out)I don't know maybe I'm looking too much into this lol. Love your channel buddy just subscribed this morning! Keep up the fantastic content!😊

    I always felt that atari lynx should have been able to connect to the tv and have the same resolution as genesis with a few more sound channels.

    You're a funny dude, and your old lady is easy on the eyes. I always wanted the Lynx when I was a kid, but it was so damn expensive.

    I had a Lynx in my middle school years. I loved it but unfortunately I only ever saw 1 game. Gauntlet. I don't remember how I got it but it was the only one I ever saw.

    i LOVED double dragon on this sucker. was a really good arcade port for what it was. what i loved about gameboy was its battery life and awesome music in those games like tmnt and motocross maniacs and ninja gaiden. i HATED the pixel ghosting though. was really bad.

    I think Atari really missed a trick here. If they would have beefed up the sound and increased the resolution and colour count, the Lynx would have been a really badass console at the time. They could have avoided the Panther/Jaguar fiasco altogether.

    • @AlexOjideagu2
      @AlexOjideagu2 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would have drowned the battery even more. And the Sound Effects were awesome. Some games even have speech. Load up Toki and listen to the quality of the samples.

      I meant as a home console, not a portable. The 7800 had already failed by that point, and they could have been really competitive in the 16-bit market. The sound is fine for a portable, but it would have needed some help to match up to the TG16 and Genesis. The DACs are nice when used properly, but at only 4 channels, there would be a lot of drop out or you'd have an Amiga situation where you could play with music or sound effects, but not both in a lot of games.

      @@gargonovich Agree, they could have added a video port for a small increase of price an boom, you have a 16 bit home console that is also a hand held system.
