A minor thing about Innkeeper's Talent is that it doesn't just give Creatures Ward 1, it would also do the same for Planeswalkers, Sagas (Like Urza's Saga) and even itself, as it is also a permanent with counters on it. Very cool.
Yes for Planeswalkers and Sagas, but I'm pretty sure Classes don't get counters
Classes don't use counters, but you're correct otherwise
Note that (per the rules) class enchantments don't actually use counters to track them (unlike, for example, sagas or perhaps confusingly level up cards), so it won't get ward.
Oh fudge...
Ah. My mistake about the class enchantment. Must have gotten it mixed up since my group uses counters to keep track of the level. My bad
skullclamping woodland animals is literally ivo "eggman" robotnik behavior
Always a good day when there's a new North 100 to listen to!
After having discussed all these food matters cards, Nelly looked pretty stuffed at the end.
Yo i think that at the ten minute mark, Serge fully claimed the title of premier food pilot of the format.
I really like using this show as tips for my cube. The analysis really helps
"Look at that head, perfectly sized to draw me two cards"
Two things in green I was surprised to not see mentioned:
-Innkeeper's Talent's final level making planeswalkers absurd. It builds up to a Doubling Season! In the right deck that makes it a big threat once you get there imo
-The body on Mistbreath Elder??? Like, they spent the whole review talking about how it's great to have a cheap creature that unsummons things, which is obviously what you want to do to maximize the card, but it's also just an absolute haymaker of a threat. Drops above curve on turn one and stays above curve as long as you have fodder. I think this part of the card is also very potent and shouldn't be overlooked, even if it can be chumpblocked
The edit on Nelson’s exit was amazing.
They had my hopes up at the start that they were actually going to talk about Azure Beastbinder, and they didn't. The card is so good!
Yeeeeeah but it doesn't kill Karnstructs.
@jacobkristos1214 it may not kill them, but it turns it into a flat 2/2 until your next turn. It also can turn off a planeswalker or artifact for the same time duration, which is huge utility
🥺
"Sell your copy! Because Commander players are gonna pay, like, a bajillion dollars for this thing"
"... but Doctor, I AM Paglia-uh a commander player."
On the keen-eye curator: it doesnt say cards but card types, so it is not impossible to exile a land enchantment and a creature artefact making it a 4 mana 7/7 with trample
Three Tree City does count tokens, which kinda helps it
Yeah, Three Tree City is the Nykthos for Token Tribal decks. Since Tokens don’t add to Nykthos.
@@Kubimaruicedragon The tokens do need to be of the type you chose as you played the land, though. As Wheeler said: It's specifically good in typal go-wide decks.
canadian highlander is so fun and cool
Keen-eyed curator could be a 4 mana 7/7 trample if you hit Urza’s Saga and an artifact creature with it.
Came here to say this, I feel it's an important evaluation angle for the card. So many cards have multiple types that I think it's more rare you pay the full 4 to get 4 card types.
A L G O R I T H M G A N G
Here's timestamps and a few opinions.
1:03 Kitsa, Otterball Elite
4:05 Clifftop Lookout
6:18 Curious Forager. This card is bad. You need to jump through a hoop for +1/+1 and less green pips compared to EWit. I'd rather never miss.
8:03 Gormound's Talent
11:40 Innkeeper's Talent
14:50 Keen-Eyed Curator
18:08 Lumra, Bellow of the Woods
21:05 Mistbreath Elder (notably not an Elder)
26:34 Overprotect. "Blor's defenses are impervious!"
28:38 Pawpatch Formation
31:45 Pawpatch Recruit
34:38 Scrapshooter
36:36 Tender Wildguide. A-Tier Adorableness
42:20 Thornvault Forager
==GOLD==
46:20 Burrowguard Mentor: 2 mana AND TRAMPLE
48:35 Camellia, the Seedmiser
51:22 Fineas, Ace Archer
52:45 Fireglass Mentor: We need a Gaffer creature type obviously (a gaffer is a glassblower)
54:56 Gev, Scaled Scorch
57:10 Glarb, Calamity's Augur. Frog Wizard Noble = Frizoble
1:01:03 Hugs, Grisly Guardian
1:03:05 The Infamous Cruelclaw
1:06:08 Mabel, Heir to Cragflame. I like the Stoneforge comparison. It finds a very specific 0 costed equipment, and it's a 3/3. The lord effect is flavor text.
1:07:30 Pond Prophet
1:09:40 Ral, Crackling Wit
1:13:37 Stormcatch Mentor
1:16:05 Vinereap Mentor
1:17:06 Vren, the Relentless
1:19:50 Wandertale Mentor
1:21:25 Ygra, Eater of All
1:23:28 Zoraline, Cosmos Caller
==COLORLESS==
1:27:30 Fountainport. Trading Port. I don't think it's unbelievably powerful because spending 3+4 mana and 1 life to draw a card is that great. I think it'll be the most common for spare tokens where you can cash in a naturalized Karnstruct, or a Food for a card. The fish will probably matter in initiative matchups.
1:30:32 Three Tree City. This isn't a Canadian Highlander card imo. If you're netting mana, you've probably already won.
Bloomburrow was my first prerelease since, Unhinged, there I arm wrestled an opponent who had two hands behind his back for a monkey, and won a breath holding contest against another to steal a double word mail-ed, longest name elemental. It was just as much fun, and i only mad hundreds of rabbits.
i'll have you know that a few people are still brewing Black Moon aka "Gothic Moon". Been terrorizing control players with it for months!
I’ve always thought of it as “Eclipse”
With Kitsa you can also copy a countered Reanimate to still get that same target back
For Serge, a few years ago I made an academy rector + thousand-year storm dedicated combo deck to bring to my local events and got some wins with it including one where I beat my opponent down with recruiters and spell seeker + silence effects after they managed to remove my enchantment, I’m sure you could bring a version of it to a memes and moxen night. It probably could play Ral too!
Creepy Doll had some strong opinions on the state of the format. I wasn't expecting such hot takes
I think Orzhov's greatest strength is having the best Initiative creatures. White Plume and Dungeoneer are indisputable, but Ravenloft, Passageway Seer, and Vicious Battlerager have strong additional abilities that work well to reclaim the initiative if lost. Plus Demonic Tutor has never been more affordable; Mox/Mox/DT leaves you a point to play with now Jitte is free.
Gourmand's Talent makes Academy Manufacturer kind of extra hilarious for the food deck, because now not only do you get triple tokens they're all food. And I don't know how it works with regards to creating non-clue/food/treasure artifact tokens that are now also food tokens when you've created them potentially triggering it but that would be a fun edge case for... I don't know what other tokens you'd even be creating to potentially do that honestly.
😂 the voxy special, I’m fkn ded 😂
Please explain. I haven't been watching voxy alot lately, so I didn't get the joke.
I assume Vren waits until end step so that you won't get things from board wipes that also kill Vren.
pond prophet is a wall of blossoms that can pitch to force and attack it's so good
I don't think you let Harry talk enough in the gold cards section
Again, I think that all the calamity beasts are Elementals only because the small Bloomburrow critters perceive them as overpowerful elemental forces of nature.
I would argue that the only reason the small Bloomburrow critters perceive them as powerful elemental forces of nature is because they are elementals.
I mean, they're all pretty clearly unnatural. Cats do not normally have miniature suns on their back.
Dragonhawk not being an Elemental despite throwing storms around also seems like a pretty damning gap in this theory.
@@Kestral287 Dragonhawk isn't a native of the plane. It's a dragon from Kolaghan's brood that went through an Omenpath. That's why it's not an elemental but can throw lightning around.
Yes, exactly. But the original point is that it's the Bloomburrow natives' perception of the creatures that makes them 'Elemental', and Dragonhawk is a pretty damning counterpoint to that argument
@@Kestral287 The Calamity Beasts are explicitly tied to the nature of the plane and are the source of Bloomburrow's seasons. They aren't just "perceived" as being big and scary, they are elementals because they have a literal impact and connection to elements of nature, being essentially walking natural disasters.
Ironically Three Tree City might see maybe home in some artifact deck, where you name servos or costructs and treat it like wastes for most game, but once in a while it will give you couple more mana like poor man's academy.
I'm disappointed that Nelson's replacement host didn't get featured in the thumbnail...
0:40 the best reason to go to the Patreon
With regards to Stormcatch Mentor, at some point we'll have enough of this effect that the Prowess deck can just step all their spells up to 2 mana instead of just having a bunch of 1 mana stuff
Boy I sure love engaging with this content
I think Scavenger’s Talent in black is a better food card than Gourmand’s Talent
why does keen eyed courier cost generic mana to activate????
I can't look at my opponents lands and see their green sources are tapped down anymore???
Remind me to do something degenerate with Yawgmoth's Jacuzzi in commander at some point, just to style on cEDH players.
ok but what if Human Ral was the fursona of the otter? :P
Coiling Oracle ramps if you hit a land with it. Straight up better than any Elvish Visionary with the same stats
"Tender Wildguide" is just a cute card.
It has such a nice head for clamp
Lots of mentions of whether certain creatures are legendary; is Karakas the only reason? Is it really that strong in this format? (I typically play EDH, where it is banned, so haven’t had the chance to see it in action.)
Yeah in CanLander most decks play Karakas, even if they're not White
A Karakas in play can just sort of hard lock legendaries without etbs or other immediate value out of play. If you spend three mana on Helga and they not just spend one to bounce it but show you that they can repeat that bounce every turn, Helga does nothing for you.
Of course it can also be used to protect your legendaries against control piles, but that's not as significant of a line.
And the barrier to entry for the effect is, at worst, playing a 'colorless' land.
I will not only skullclamp offspring tokens, I will also reanimate the creatures with offspring to do it again.
*pushes glasses into the wall behind my head* "Uhm, actually, you can only pay for offspring..."
Blitzball isn’t until next year and the Final Fantasy set!
Yooo i just finished part 1 and checked on the off-chance part 2 was up 🎉
also good old Toski from Kaldheim is a squirrel :)
Always so excited for content love the content
Does Goblins not create a wide enough board for Three-Tree City?
At the point where goblins have 4+ creatures on the board they’re highly unlikely to get much, if any, value out of the mana acceleration.
@@poiri and the fixing into black at 3 creatures isn't valuable at all? Is the colorless land so high as a cost of inclusion?
@@markbrierley6367 you can only play so many colorless lands, especially in a 2 color deck, and I have a hard time believing that Three Tree City makes the cut.
@@poiri especially in a deck as aggressive as Goblins
50:23 Area 51 strats. They can't Karakas all of us!
Big Gay Electric Prince Moon Storm on FNPF or Showdown when?
Three tree city might go in druids
Hey, can one of the judges explain why the "Gift" ability on Scrapshooter triggers at a different time than every other card with that same mechanic?
Nevermind. If it's a permanent, Gift triggers on ETB. That's...weird, I'll be honest.
I agree that it’s weird, but I don’t want to think about what a rules nightmare it’d be to change the rules so permanent spells can have effects that take effect during their resolution.
@@SyntheticReign How is it weird? Both versions require that the spell resolves for the opponent to get the gift. It's just that when permanents resolve, they go to the battlefield, while instants and sorceries go directly to the graveyard from the stack.
They really had two options here: "As it enters…" or "When it enters…", and they chose the second, because ETB triggers make sense for permanents.
@@Mordalon It's weird because it means that instants and sorceries resolve, the opponent gets the gift, then the effect takes place. But with permanents, the spell resolves, then it enters, then creates a trigger. So an opponent can't counter your spell without getting their gift, but they can remove your permanent from play when it enters and still get their gift. It's just a strange extra trigger to me, but I see why they did it.
No Helga??
Great show
Nelly had 1 too many bad takes and was kicked off the review. Don't let the "scheduling conflict" talk fool you, wake up Sheeple!
I didn't think about it, but Innkeepers Talent giving Planeswalkers ward one isn't nothing. Same as the doubling season last level.
Oh shoot. I saw that it gave them ward, but didn't realize it also doubled loyalty. I'm pretty sure it also doubles loyalty gained from + abilities (unlike Doubling Season which only doubles counters from "effects" not costs).
@@seandun7083 Correct, it's like "Vorinclex, Monstrous Raider", and not "Doubling Season". Plussing a Planeswalker will have double the loyalty be placed.
I look forward to the Skullclamp secret lair made up of Offspring tokens about to be clamped. Take my money Wizards that is free.
hello yourself, Serge
"Pond Prophet" is good, but the fact that it doesn't have a relevant creature type makes it less good, Elf or Wizard or something is so much better than Frog Advisor. It also costs 2 colored mana.
"Coiling Oracle" is better (in UG decks), but if you want, play both.
I'm not a fan of anthropomorphic animals and wasn't happy when Bloomburrow was announced, but I have to admit now, it turned out fairly nice.
Sad that in a few days the next set will be released, so we don't have much time to enjoy Bloomburrow. :/
The next set isn't released in a few days, and even when the next one does you can still enjoy Bloomburrow.
1:37:08 Who? 🎎
Y'all are worried about saccing the offspring and I'm like, eat the babies
Clothing thoughts, lol
The shorts meta has been challenged by Serge ...
What does that mole in Innkeeper's Talent do with their right arm? Just your friendly neighborhood German asking.
thank you for saying that about Three Tree
the card is SO bad
in order for it to not just be strictly worse than Nykthos you have to actively play into only tokens over real cards, and EVEN ON THOSE decks... are you not playing anthems and lords?
even in EDH your board will have like 10+ MV, but that thing only taps for +3
Yeah. You also need to be playing a bunch of the same kind of token rather than being able to play a variety of the best token makers.
There are legitimate reasons to not be playing lords and anthems in EDH even in decks that make a good number of tokens, mainly if the tokens are a backup plan for a different strategy. That being said, while there are places where Three Tree City is legitimately strong, they're much more narrowly tailored than most of the people hyping the card seem to realize. Even just comparing it to Nykthos, a big downgrade I haven't seen brought up much is the fact that Nykthos chooses what devotion to care about when the ability is activate, whereas TTC chooses which creature type on ETB. For some decks that might otherwise be able to take advantage of TTC that can be a deal breaker. For example, Monastery Mentor, Yung Peezy, and Third Path Iconoclast are all cards that are frequently played together in decks that may not be committing much to the board other than themselves and their tokens, but it's a much harder sell when they all make different types of creatures and switching which type your TTC is probably means bouncing and replaying it.
For TTC to actually be good, or at least as good or better than Nykthos, you need as many of the following to be true as possible:
1) your deck generates a decent number of creature tokens
2) those tokens are mostly of a single creature type
3) those tokens are used as a secondary resource or plan B (meaning you aren't playing a lot of other permanents that buff them and add to devotion)
4) you're in 3 or more colors (because with 2 or fewer your colored pips are probably still adding enough devotion to a single color that Nykthos is still better)
5) one of those colors is not green (if you are, you probably have better options even without Gaea's Cradle)
The types of decks where enough of those things are true are pretty much only played in commander, and not every commander that hypothetically could make good use of the card is going to be built in a way that actually does. There are some Kykar, Wind's Fury decks that could make it pretty good, but if they're mixing up a lot of token types by playing those earlier mention MM, YP, and TPI, maybe it's not as good or requires additional attention to make sure it always best taken advantage of. Alela, Artful Provocateur is a pretty popular commander choice that can be built in ways that make TTC good, but if you're on a dedicated faerie tribal deck, you probably have blue or black pips in play from creature or enchantments that Nykthos might still be better most of time.
There are absolutely decks that Three Tree City shines in, but because almost all of them are commander decks, and because commander players are disproportionately likely to be bad at Magic and to not do the extra analysis to see if it's actually good in their particular deck, it just ends up in this weird spot where it's straddling the line between being a good commander card and being a good commander card (derogatory).
I think a more realistic situation for TTC to add more mana than Nykthos is playing a kindred deck that's many colors as opposed to being hyperfocused on tokens - I don't think connecting it with tokens is the right way of thinking. Like, if you have a 1B Vampire, a 1W Vampire and a 1R Vampire TTC works and Nykthos doesn't. And at that point the fixing becomes relevant. While that's offset by the fact that all the mana it adds is a single color and it only adds colorless while offline, I think that _might_ make it actually playable in some very fringe decks - Slivers spring to mind. That being said it's still very much dependent on the player being ahead already.
@@Raymaniak but if you're playing those typal decks that are 3~4 colors it's STILL bad cause those decks want to cast creatures that are 2~3 colors and Three Tree City only taps for 1.
the card just isn't great, to the point I'd question even running it over a Basic
I get the whimsy of Bloomburrow, but it just hasn't been for me. This seems like the reverse of some people's sentiments, but it's whimsy feels kind of shallow, while I really enjoyed the old-west aesthetics of OTJ.
Im so glad to hear Wheeler say the truth about Three Tree City.
Its such a useless card in all formats other than casual commander.
❤
Yeah, Three Tree City would be terrible in Krenko or Wilhelt, the Rotcleaver /s. What are we doing here people. The card is obviously over hyped to the gills right now due to Commander tribal demand and the price will be tanking soon; however, it is not a bad card but a niche card and will see play. Wheeler continuing to show that he is an unserious person.
Neither Krenko nor Wilhelt are that relevant in the format, let alone decks in and of themselves.
Yeah, the phrase "in Krenko" doesn't make a lot of sense in Highlander. You don't build and name decks around singular legendary creatures. And Wheeler is a councilor with many showings in the yearly top 8 - he's obviously not unerring, but I think his perspective on the format is likely to be sensible.
Get in here
