I actually quite like the idea of a pen that slowly erodes to fit your grip. Problem is where you actually grip it with your fingers is metal, not concrete.
I think it would conform to your hand more where it rests in the crook of your hand. But even then I don't think your hand is very abrasive, I think the most noticeable change would be the darkening patina that would probably react differently to each owner's hand and skin oils.
Combining the weight of stainless steel, the price of silver, the brittleness of glass, the wear resistance of mother-of-pearl, and the production cost of plastic... It's the one and only: COOOONCREEEEETE PEEEN!
lol very true. Sometimes good old plastic is the best material for a pen. It's not wrong that people want to touch something other than plastic once in awhile though, but concrete is one of the stranger novelties I've ever seen.
In case you were wondering, the type of concrete used in that pen is what's referred to as "high-Slump" surfacer, which is typically used for cosmetic purposes, not for its structural capability. Strength has nothing to do with a pen that's made out of non-structural concrete. It has very little strength, due to how "soupy" it is. Generally the more aggregate (stone/gravel filler) there is in concrete, the stronger it is, and that concrete has very little aggregate in it. It's essentially the concrete equivalent of Lime-Stone. The "Slump test" is essentially where you pour some of your batch of concrete into a cardboard cone, remove the cone, and how much it deforms and sinks down after the cone is removed is its Slump rating. "Low-Slump" concrete is much stronger than "high-Slump." Generally, a drier mix (within reason, of course) will cure stronger than a wet mix. Also, another reason why the pen body is so smooth is the result of the use of polymer binding agents. It's essentially a combination of high-Slump and plastic, which would be entirely unsuitable for a structural concrete pour, but maybe okay for a pen. I'd be interested in seeing how well it would hold up over hours of use under the combination of skin abrasion and the corrosive nature of human sweat. Them using the fact that it will unduly wear out as a marketing "bonus" is a bit dishonest at best. A wood pen body will wear and acclimate itself to your hand yet still retain its longevity, a high-Slump concrete pen will likely just turn black and wear away to nothing before long.
I'm not gonna lie My stupid ass thought this was a pen that wrote in concrete before I clicked on the video. Boy, DO I FEEL DUMB. Nice drawing, though, Peter!
Hi Peter! I've been subscribed to you since I was a freshman in high school and now I'm 5 weeks from finishing my freshman year of college in Colorado. I just wanted to let you know that your videos bring joy to my sometimes dreary days and I am so appreciative of them. I am an artist myself and I have "drawn" (pun intended) a lot of inspiration from your work. :) Please keep doing what you are doing and don't let anyone tell you that your videos don't matter because they do and I know I'm not the only one who believes that. I was wondering, how old are you? I could probably look it up or find it in one of your videos (or have a good enough memory to remember it if you said it in a video that I watched), but I'm just gonna ask anyway here. :P Hope you had a good day! Thanks for what you do, Alyssa
When Hallmark came out with their line of wooden pens/pencils, one of the advertising points was that the casing would absorb the oils from a users hands and would eventually darken and adopt a "tone" unique to the individual user.
I love pens that patina with age. I've used my old brass delike alpha to break a car window with a rock as a hammer when my glass breaker failed (I'm a paramedic) and the pen saved a life. its patina is deeply wearing in and I love it. It's got so many stories and memories attached to it that if it looked shiny and new, I don't think I'd have the same attachment to it. I love that $12 pen (it has a $20 vintage gold nib in it now, but it's still a $12 pen that I sanded the lacquer off of and filed a notch into for the clip) more than my $1000 visconti or mont blanc pens.
I think Windows are very strong and it would be easier to break by using a lot of pressure on a single point (that's how window breakers work) Also if you're a paramedic you probably don't want to throw a rock through the window of a car with someone in it
I'm one of those people that loves a good patina on my stuff. The scratches and scuffs on the leather of my TN, the discoloration on the brass accents of one of my favorite pens. It makes them feel like they're completely mine and unique!
Hello Sofi L! "The primary difference between concrete and cement is that concrete is a composite material made of water, aggregate, and cement. Cement is a very fine powder made of limestone and other minerals, which absorbs water and acts as a binder to hold the concrete together. While cement is a construction material in its own right, concrete cannot be made without cement. The two terms often are incorrectly used interchangeably, but concrete and cement are distinctly separate products." www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-difference-between-concrete-and-cement.htm

man you're right. he totally should! I keep looking in the comment section of every video hoping eventually he will release an album!!! but I havent seen any yet! Maybe one day!
I actually like a clip on my pens because they are nice for storing a pen on a spiral bound sketchbook. I keep a .7 staedtler in the spiral of my small sketchbook to doodle while I'm working in the office. A nice compact easy to manage package
Choo Choo! (12:15). Just saying. Anyways, I just discovered you're great drawing channel recently and rediscovered my love of sketching and drawing. Thanks man.
I can see it getting darker like leather from the oil of your hand. The smoothing part would happen too, just the nature of the material. I guess it would be a benefit due to it would wear in to fit you perfectly like a favorite pair of jeans.
the cut hair surprised me! but good video as usual! i've been considering pens lately because i've been binging your videos, and i just like watching them lol. also, it might've been thin concrete over plastic or something, or hollow inside.
In my experience, Schmidt nibs are on the drier side. It's not a flaw--it just is. Some people like/prefer that, others don't. They write fine when you're writing normally, but if you want to draw very quickly, the stingier ink flow can be an issue. They're good for situations when you can't control the quality of the paper you might have to use, as wet nibs will bleed and feather much more on bad paper.
I can't even read my own writing no matter what I use lol... sidewalk chalk or my micrometer pens... all a jumble of "help me" haha! I LOVE the design of the 2nd cement pen! Looks like it was MADE for people who don't "hold the pen right" Speaking of, have you ever done a video on how back in grade school teachers would try to get their students to write "appropriately" by only using 3 fingers?? I hated that, but I still LOVE to draw and have pens and color and draw! :)
Concrete is a thing because it's porous and can soak up water and its internal bits can comfortably shrink and expand with temperature (not by much, but still). Much lighter than metal and still quite strong (but still needs metal rebar reinforcement for the strong strong stuff).
Had an odd dream "segment" last night and, as I don't dream often, I found it odd that you were in it. I was at a movie theater and you were speaking with someone as if you were some sort of psychologist/therapist (which you kind of are). Reminded me of the movie "Waking Life" which I saw when I was a teenager and plan to re-watch now at 26. Anyhow, have a great year!
I really liked your drawing. I'm not sure I could give $100 for the concrete pen, but I probably would for that drawing. Props my strange pen reviewing friend.
It's a sealed concrete. Similar to what you'd see on a warehouse floor or some factory floors, especially if Alot of liquids are used in production, sealed concrete is almost a necessity. Any concrete can be smooth though, the roughness comes from pebbles and air pockets. Ancient Roman structures used super old "concrete" that was very smooth
I recently bought a guitar finished in nitrocellulose lacquer, pretty much for the exact reason you outlined in this video. I think you're on to something Peter!
I would be concerned with the o-ring at the cap. This could create a vacuum in the cap and draw ink out and fill the cap with ink leaving a huge mess when uncapped next time.
It's probably concrete mixed not with aggregates like sand and gravel but with synthetic resin (synthetic plastic) bonded to a hollow metal possibly on the inside, so the concrete, resin mix is just a skin. That's what I'm guessing. Thank you. God bless.
