If I get my 30 pin charging cable out I can get the thing to boot up and if it's fully charged and I unplug it it will last for a while. You can get the battery replaced, and if it’s no longer charging then you definitely should because charging a dead battery will cause it to swell, damaging the phone, and possibly explode.
After 6 or 7 years it’s definitely time to upgrade. That being however, Apple is the best at supporting their devices for longer periods of time vs the competition. I used my old iMac for 13 years. All my old iPhones had at at least 5 plus years on them before I upgraded. That’s one of the main reasons that I stick with Apple.
Trust me, there are versions of every phone even the newest ones that have exploded while charging. A young girl in my area fell asleep with her phone in her hand while charging and it killed her when she laid on it too long it got too hot and she ended up not alive...

I bought a refurbished 4s of eBay just for my collection, I charged it, play with it, and then put it on my bookshelf. A few months went by and when I looked at it was pulled apart from a swollen battery.
What's crazy is they had a camera pointed right at it. Convenient right? You know what I think? I think it was charging there because the parents have a cut off time for phone use. The camera is so they can know if the kid tries to wake up in the middle of the night and use it. 😂
A couple of days ago I was charging my 14 Pro Max on the wireless charger in my car, and all of a sudden the carplay stopped working so I look at the phone and it has a high-temperature warning. The first time something like this happened to me and had to cool off the phone with the air vent, now I always keep an eye on the phone when it's charging. 😅

i believe it's the smart keyboard folio for ipad pro. there is a similarly functioning "smart keyboard for ipad 9th generation" as well. magnetically clips on to the side of the 9th gen instead of covering the back though.
cell batteries have an expected shelf life of 10 years. to try and push beyond that is at your own risk. basically this battery short circuited when dendrite built up between the anode and cathode of the battery. you know those stalactites, and stalagmites in caves. those long pointy rocks that build up caused from water drippings that bring and deposit minerals? thats basicalyl what happens in your battery too, when dendrites build up. ions transfer through the membrain when charging and create these mineral deposits that eventually can make a connection and cause a short circuit causing the battery to catch fire.

This is just about how much you use the phone. My aunt has a iPhone 11 that she’s had 4 years her battery health is 89% still. My iPhone 12 I’ve had for almost 2 years now is at 78% health. Because I use my phone way more.
Old lithium-ion batterys are far more likely to combust whilst charging but are also capable of combusting whilst being in storage due to the battery breaking down. I never store any old Li-ion batterys in my home or garage due to them being ticking time bombs.
