Big Shot - How to Play 🎲 and Is It a Gem? 💎

  • Big Shot is a simple-to-explain auction/area-majority game with several twists that make it special. First, you auction groups of player pieces, yours and your opponents, meaning you can do something with every auction win, either to help or hinder. Second, ties cancel themselves out, meaning you can do a lot with a little. And finally, open money and a clever loan system means you'll agonize over outbidding your opponents. All of this in a crisp, challenging 30-45 minute game. Chef's kiss!
    If there was a Mount Rushmore of board game designers, Alex Randolph would be on it. While he might best be known for two-player abstracts like Twixt, Big Shot is one of his later games, and fits well in the "OG" simple-and-interactive school of multiplayer game design.

    I've bought both Big Shot and MarraCash after seeing your videos, they look absolutely amazing. I love how interactive those old games are.
    But if anything is a gem, it's this channel ;).

    This game looks fantastic. It’s got one of those rules explanations where every additional rule makes me more excited to play it.

    That game is cool. Staying on the shelve.
    I mostly chase the "new" old game 😅

    Great video as usual; this one looks interesting. Are you planning a companion video comparing the different editions?

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not anytime soon. I only have the one edition and am happy with it. 🙂 But if I come across a newer edition relatively inexpensively, sure!

    I think Ra works best with 3! :)

      Heh, I got a lot of people saying the same thing. 🙂 I think I didn't speak clearly. I meant that I couldn't think of an auction game in which the auction itself works better at 3 than with more. There are certainly auction games that overall are better with 3 than with more, but not because of the auction, it's because of the other stuff around it. At least I can't think of any that are.

    Funny, that you mentioned four as the best player count: I just saw someone on BGG who specifically called out Big Shot as best at three. I think both are great. But, Biblios, Ra, Nefertiti, and Speicherstadt are some auction games I love at three!
    Hey! Muscat makes a guest appearance. 😉

      Yeah the 3p and 4p games are identical. It’s just that the auctions are more interesting with four.
      Your list makes me realise I may have misspoken in my video. There are certainly auction games that are better with 3p vs 4p; I had meant I can’t think of a game in which the auction itself is better with three. Of course the stuff around it might make it better with fewer. 🙂

      I actually think that there is a difference, and for me that difference makes the 3p-game more interesting. With the neutral player colour you can throw it in with less risk of making another player win on a plot of land, plus faster gameplay of course. This is in my top three games of all time. Thank you for making this video, you are such a gem!

    Do you know china? Big shot vs China, who is the winner? Great videos!

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks! I most certainly do know China - love it! I feel like they are quite different though, since China has no auctions and instead uses light cardplay. I've never thought to compare them, and I couldn't choose between the two unless I knew the group. Big Shot is a game that some people will love and some will hate! China is going to go over smoother with more people, but it's not as exciting.

      Ah, I see what you mean. I must have misspoke in the video. There are certainly games with auctions that are better with three vs four. I had meant I can’t think of any in which the auction itself is better with fewer. Sorry for the confusion!
