  • Today we review two new releases for 2024 that collectively, along with a special cameo wristwatch check that's also a new release for this year, reveal to us what's shaping up to be the next big trend in watch design. First up to bat is a tough, super capable, ocean-going GMT diver from the inventor of the Swiss sports watch as we know it, and the most underrated brand the country has to offer-aptly named the Alpina Seastrong Extreme GMT in 39mm. Secondly, we have a wonderfully refined update of an even more modest and compact Seiko Samurai professional diver-the Seiko Mini Samurai ref. SRPL15-as well as a new 70s inspired automatic chronograph based on a long lost prototype-the Chronosport from Nivada Grenchen. Join me for an in-depth review of the Alpina Seastrong Extreme and the Seiko Mini Samurai, including all the positives and negatives of each, and how they are both part of a new trend that is going to take over in the next few years and become the dominant style, alongside a continuing move towards smaller watches. What do you think about the watches in this video? Are they a hit or a miss? And what do you think will be the next hot trend? Please share in the comments!

I wish the Ultra thin watches become trendy again, lately i was introduced to the Seiko Lassale from the 80s and Oh boyyy ,, they're so slim , so well made as well as elegant and their design is so unique. I hope they become the next trend.

If you like ultra-thin, look into their U.T.D. models!! I managed to pick up a 3rd generation Seiko U.T.D. for only 600 euro. 4.4mm thick case and a 1.98mm thick full hand decorated manualwind movement! (Thinner than the modern JLC Master Controll ultra-thin)

I think there's every chance that slim and thinner watches will be trending. I know young people don't tend to have the money to drive trends in the upper end of the watch market but it is younger people who tend to drive fashion trends in general and they are definitely pushing towards much smaller watches. Older teens and early twenties are rejecting smart watches and big G-Shocks are definitely out. What's in are either smaller 80s style Casio's or smaller analogue watches like 80s or 90s used women's Seiko's or tank copies. I'm not sure exactly what that will lead to in the future but they are the trends I'm seeing for young people and I could see that pushing an interest in smaller and slimmer.

I’m pleased to see the traditional watch industry embracing smaller, thinner designs. These watches not only feel more comfortable but also look better on most wrists, as many people wear oversized watches that don’t suit them.
Unfortunately, this trend hasn’t fully reached the smartwatch market. If you're looking for an all-round fitness watch with GPS, the majority of options are still over 44mm, leaving fewer choices for those who prefer something more compact.

I have the black mini-Samurai. I will say this: I had a hard time turning the bezel when my fingers were wet. I suspect the knurled bezel may be a bit too thin for my wet fingers to get a grip. I do like the dial and marker layout, and it runs a little fast but I've learned not to expect consistency from the factory-set 4R movements, so it's something people can learn to live with.

Nice one, T! I'm not sure I can discern a single, overriding trend in watches at the moment (other than smaller case sizes, perhaps…which I'm totally on-board with), but I like what I'm seeing with what you've showcased here, particularly with the revised Samurai - I liked the overall vibe of the first two versions, but never thought they'd work on my wrist, while the third is a *serious* possibility. The Alpina has some appeal, but the overall design effect is a bit too busy for me…almost as if they're trying ridiculously hard to stand out, whereas Seiko is simply refining and distilling an established aesthetic of their own. At any rate, excellent presentation (yet again), and definitely looking forward to that NV review - that thing looks the business on your wrist.

It is nice to see some fresh designs for sure! Especially for one reason, the Seiko is for me the clear winner between the two!
Maybe you can pass to the manufacturers you are in contact with, that proprietary straps are indeed deal-breakers for many customers. Proprietary bracelets probably not so much, as they last much longer, but if a refit is needed after some years and a few too many gourmet dinners, extra links may have been lost, and then what do you do?
There are ways of integrating straps and bracelets very fluidly into a watch body, without requiring custom fit or awkward adapters, like the simply standard use of "round ends" for so many bracelets.
So, with the Alpina's strap problem, the new Seiko is the pick for me in this review, should I win a Lotto, and also have enough to move to the Australian Outback. But in that case, I think I would take an in person look at Australia's own home-grown "Adina" brand 😀
The Alpina has one thing going for, it. Its bezel is all black, and yet readable! Bravo! This is the bezel, that Glycine should have made for its all black case and black bezel themed PVD Airman Contemporary series, but failed at.
My signal yellow dial, black PVD Airman GL0463 is not the total stealth version you reviewed previously, but its bezel was still rather useless in person, so I took a gold-metallic marker to it, filled in the depressed markers and numerals, gently wiped off the excess on the surface with alcohol (do not soak, lest the insert-glue may be dissolved), and ended up with a very sharply defined and quite readable bezel, matching the face. On this colourised bezel, I can finally read different time zones
Sadly, for the Alpina, any integrated and hence proprietary and potentially very expensive replacement strap (some cost more than the whole watch on sale!) is a deal-breaker after a few broken straps had me toss 3 or 4 watches that had seen their wear time.

I'm happy watch sizes have come down, and that smaller sizes are becoming more readily available. For me, 38-39mm is perfect for sports watches, and 35-38 for dress watches. When i dive, I wear my dive computer; not that I don't like "dive" watches, quite the contrary (I own quite a few from different brands). I feel they have fantastic utility with their timing bezel and robust build quality. It's just that I, for one, don't need a watch larger than 40mm. I'm happy larger watches exist for those who do, of course. No such thing as "one size fits all."

Thanks for taking a look at both of these watches. The Alpina definitely deserves more attention. I wish they were more easily accessible. I looked up stores in Texas and came up with only one in the state, 5 hours away. I really like the look of their new diver/GMT models in this Seastrong Extreme line. It stands out as interesting design that is not only looking back. The Samurai is a nice update. I hadn't noticed the date color on the maroon one, which is disappointing. I was thinking of picking one up at some point.

  • @Makingnewnamesisdumb

I frequently use the arrow indicator on my gmt bezel as a marker for timing stuff if I need to. The arrow still marks where your minute hand was when you started timing and you can use the dial markers to measure how much time has passed since you marked it. Just because you have a gmt bezel doesn't necessarily mean you can't time things with your bezel. Although it does make it more of a pain in the ass to get everything resituated after timing if you were using the bezel to track a different time zone. But then you also couldn't have been doing that with a timing bezel. So there's a give and take.

Looks just like the Adventure Avalanche. I would take the Samurai, but I strongly refer the Sumo case or the 1968 case. I adore my SPB240 and my SBDC097 Grey Sumo. The Ice Diver Sumo’s are great. I would love to see some upscale Ice Diver Samurai models. I would buy one if it were made up to the SPB level quality.

I am seeing a lot of Monnin Case watches on the market recently and I think that is great. I hate that up to now, many dive watches have had a lug width of 22mm, resulting in skinny weak lugs. The return to Monnin cases is a great move. When I find a swiss auto movement in a Monnin case, I will buy it. HGP ws very tempting but it is Japanese movement.

Purpose of Hardlex is supposedly it does not crack when scratched, for example against underwater rocks. Same reason why Tuna and many other diver models have it. Not because it is supposedly cheap. Not to mention, that distortion is interesting. I wonder if it is less visible underwater. As for Alpina, I keep hearing they are an underrated brand, but at the same time, no matter how hard I try, I cant find a model in their lineup I would really like. And it has been so sincer I fell into this watch rabbit hole.

Great video as always TGV ❤And good to see a slow move away from vintage inspired 1970’s era watches, that feel very much played out at this stage. I think the new retro-futuristic style also has a strong 80’s influence as well, which I’m very much here for too 🤖

This channel got me into Seiko. I bought my first Seiko automatic because of what I had seen here and it is by far my favorite watch. I was always into watches, which is what brought me here. But it was a lot of crap. Nixon watches and crap like that. This channel really got me to appreciate timepieces for what they are. Mini pieces of art and mechanical genius. Granted, a lot of what I see here is above my price point (good watches are expensive and it sucks), but I have learned a lot and really found myself appreciating watches in a way I hadn't before.

Nice work again TGV. Though it is going to be hard to top the Ghost Dog episode I’m in for the newer Samurai. In the past I’ve liked Alpina but they always seemed to be lacking in the Lume dept for my tastes. Question how was the Lume of the Alpina this time? Traditionally the hands are always fantastic but the markers are always extremely thin and lacking in the same brightness as the hand set. If Alpina were to fix this issue it would be far more impressive of an offer from them. I do love good Lume on a watch dial. If it is lacking in other areas I still like it simply because of great Lume. I just know historically what their lume is like. You would think it would be easy but I guess it would also cost more if it had fantastic Lume on both hands and hour markers. Which honestly I’d be far more comfortable paying a touch more to simply have better quality Lume. Another great video my friend. Loving this direction of your channel for sure.
