Everyone is saying the V8 is gone on the 2022 Tundra I still think there’s a “decent” chance they will make the 5.0 V8 they use in some Lexus models an option. A lot of truck buyers still insist on a V8 and Toyota still wants to sell trucks.
@Tyler many times a Diesel engine upgrade is around 5k and the oil changes are usually double the cost and overall more expensive to maintain so that sort of negates the fuel saving to a good degree.
@Tyler the 2.7 ecoboost does well on mileage but 5.0 V8 and 3.5 ecoboost do not much get much better mileage from what I’ve seen. Around 2 mpg better in real world conditions. And F-150’s reliability isn’t up there with the Tundras especially when you want to put 200 k miles or more on your truck. And as far as towing you max out the so called towing ratings on most of these 1/2 tons anymore it’s almost a scary experience. Power is fine controlling the load? That’s another story. If you’re pulling 8-10k pounds you should be using a 3/4 ton imo.
@Tyler the biggest difference between the two is overall reliability. If you’re going to trade up every 3 years or so I’d probably own a F150 myself if they were more reasonably priced but anymore I keep a truck 10-15 years and say 300k miles. A Hunting buddy of mine is a big Ford guy. Asked him how he liked his newest F150 and why he got rid of his last one. Said “he really likes the truck but he’s learned from experience they’re not a good long term tuck.”
@Tyler sorry that’s not true. Here’s just a few examples, consumer reports rates the reliability of the Tundra much higher than the F150 every year. Find a true 1 million mile (1/2 ton) F150? Tundra now has 3. Go to almost any reliability study on trucks and pretty sure you’ll never find the F150 rated more reliable. Here’s one good example we have 2 independent mechanics in my home town. Both drive Tundras. I’ve asked them why? “Built better and last longer”. Also I’ve experienced in my own life of buying multiple new trucks both domestics and Toyota from both my personal truck and my business.
Look at the image Toyota is going for and where everyone else is going towards. They're saying that the next gen will be a game changer. I'm willing to bet no V8, no diesel, all economy and tech.
My third gen Tundra impresses me everyday. With a few suspension enhancement mods, the truck is stable and sound when I’m maxed out on my tow capacity. Additionally, the fidos 🐕 love the rear window when it’s rolled down.
2021 new off the lot. 60000kms in 1 year. 12” sub 5 upgraded front speakers, driver side hand pillar entrance thingy, 33 12.5 20 fuels, aftermarket exhaust, LED Interior lighting, LED tail lights, completely blacked out, side steps and back seat storage under the rear seats. Love my tundy. Back seat is a micro hotel. Its an SR5. 🇨🇦 oh and front 3” levelling kit.
I’m on my 3rd Tundra. Only disappointment on my 2021 was that Toyota discontinued the Transmission cooler. I added one soon after I bought it. Now I’m happy 😃
I have had 7 Toyota’s, no repairs, oil, brakes and tires. The Tundra is bad on gas but my time is worth money too. My friends spend days getting their Fords fixed, many trips to the dealership, what’s that worth. I know 3 guys who have had a lifter go in their Chev 5.3L major repairs cost more than bad fuel mileage.
Sold my 2005 Tundra and bought the exact 2021 Tundra SR5 Trail Edition in Cement color. Love the 5.7 V8! Have made a few mods, and plan to do more. I don't really love the look of the new 2022.
Very good review. I've been a Ram truck owner for years, but I'm not happy with the body and frame quality. Rust maintenance is a problem, while my other vehicles in the family are fine. It would be helpful if these reviews could reference typical long term maintenance along with 5 and 10 year cost of ownership.
Toyota Tundras just work. If you're interested in impressing your friends with fancy gizmos that break and trading your car in for the new model every year, the Tundra isn't for you. If you tend to keep things that work for a long time and value reliability and simplicity, you've found what you're looking for.
This is an old video. But, it reminds me why I’ll be buying a 2021 Tundra when I replace my 2012. I don’t want a V6. The new turbochargers have problems and the info-tainment system is a a mess. So, yeah, I’ll buying a 2021 model.
I just drove a 21' TRD Pro today that's for sale for a great price. I wanted to love it, but I guess I love tech and bells and whistles more than reliability. It was so boring and outdated that I just couldn't do it. Maybe I'll get over it.
Whenever I park next to older full size pickup trucks in my Tacoma and look at them next to each other you can see how full size trucks used to be the same size as modern mid size trucks. Now full size trucks are just massive as shit and I’m not sure I like it. Seems unwieldy.
I love the bullet proof reliability, the V8 thank you very much , the six and one half foot bed , this is a truck right ? The 38 gallon tank , TRD off road SR5 double cab , 4x4 , truck , yes , truck 💪 the last of the V8 Tundras, I bought one , a brand new 2021 , and I love ❤️ it , fuel mileage be damned , I don’t care , 14 mpg is just fine for me 💪👍 I’ll take it all day long . But that’s just me I’m old school and don’t need anything all fancy 😃 thank you 🙏
No , it’s the only one our dealer had at the time 👍 I was very happy to get it . No special order . I live in a rural country area . I think the trucks up here are chosen for country environment. Southern Oregon has more dirt roads than paved 😃👍
38 gal. tank on my 2017. Other truck manufactures offer teeny-tiny fuel tanks standard. The "old" Tundra's will still be on the road long after the twin-turbo version has been towed to the scrap yard.
I wouldn't buy a Tundra from 2019 on with regards to the current generation. 2018 is the last year I would buy one and would probably be the best example and most reliable of that generation. My reason is because they removed the transmission cooler from the truck starting the 2019 year. People are reporting Transmission temps sometimes 20 degrees higher and the fluid looks pretty rough in some of the fluid changes that have occurred at around 60k miles (just search for videos on it in TH-cam). I have a 2014 with 140k miles on it and it runs like it was brand new. I love it! No problems at all. Take care of it and it will serve you a long time.
Forced to upgrade my 08 due to an accident and went with an 18 for this reason. Supposedly tests have shown fluids are good for increased temps which is why they removed it, but I’d still rather have it than not.
I have a 2015 Crewmax with 93k miles. It runs like it is new. Only one bulb has needed to replaced. i put in new spark plugs 30 thousands miles sooner than required because I am prepping for a long trip towing our 24 foot travel trailer. It has new front and rear ceramic brake pads in preparation for our trip as well.
Despite some things that aren’t class leading I absolutely love it!.. I’ve really come to value Toyota reliability.. love that basic raw V8, the huge crew cab and the overall look. The bed is annoyingly short and the bed boxes that you access from inside should be on the outside like the Ram but despite that I’d buy one in a second...
I just bought that same truck except non 4x4. Sitting right next to it was a 2011 with over 400k miles at CarMax asking 15k. It'll probably make 800k before it gives out. My dad's 2012 has almost 200k and no major issues, the only part actually changed was the alternator other than normal maintenance.
I feel like I am listening to JD Vance telling me about a Tundra. Good video. I am buying a certified pre-owned 2021 Tundra this week. Thanks for the information.
I own a 2019 Tundra. (3rd Tundra). Obviously I like Tundra. One of the biggest complaints that I have about my 19 is that the back seats are TERRIBLY uncomfortable! Especially for long distance trips! I hope Toyota addressed this in the 22 models!
I'm just over 200,000 on my second Tundra...a 2008...and it's never been in the shop. I was torn. Do I roll the dice on the 2022 or stick with tried and true. Just yesterday ordered a 2021 it's going to be here at the end of August. I can't wait. I think, like most of us, I am a little concerned about the new redesign not measuring up somehow. I think in a few years people are going to be saying..."They don't make em like they used to"
I love the Tundra. It’s a durable great looking option. I was so close to buying one and then I test drove a Trailboss. F150 and Ram just didn’t appeal to me. I may trade in my boss someday when the Tundra is all electric ⚡️ but for now I just couldn’t be happier.
He who laughs last, laughs loudest. "Last of the Old Trucks" three years later I for one am glad I have one of these "Old" trucks. The New ones are a wreck filled with flaws! Once again it has been proven that new is not always better!
Im a die hard toyota person. I plan to buy a truck at the end of next year. Keep the 21 rav4 in the household. I keep looking at things like the new tundra v6 turbo, new tacoma turbo, 3rd gen tacoma. I have looked at chevys 1500 3.0L duramax and 5.3...the ossue with chevy is the reliability of both engines. Most cases leading to months at the shop. Large bills to foot. The new tundra im on the fence about with electric waste gates and quality control issues in Texas lately. Idk enough on the new turbo tacoma. Im at a point of saying idc about mpg, i want a 30 year living truck so im not spending a month at the shop or time in my garage all the time. To me, im at a point of... why save mpg when you will spend more on fixing it all the time. Im leaning more and more to a 3rd gen tacoma or 2nd gen tundra. I know the 3rd gen tacoma has seen 200k and 300k already. We all know the 5.7 tundra has been the million miles motor. Whatever truck i buy, i plan to keep until death do us part. I want to focus on savings for retirement. Not buying a new vehicle every so many years, buying major parts or having shop bills.
Wondering if Toyota is gonna put a V8 hydrogen engine in there at some point and go with a manual 5 or 6 speed tranny. Be friggin sick to see and I'd pick one up. Gonna have to be tough though considering if there's something to break, with me whipping around and down the trails in the middle of no where It's gotta be milsurp tough.
I just got my dad a '21 Tundra SR 4x4 double cab in Barcelona Red. Price was just under $39k, $2k off MSRP. Tried looking for lightly used but they are literally selling for more money than brand new MSRP. Dad's planning on driving the truck for the next 20 years. IMO the current design is far more desirable for long-term ownership than the redesign.
I'm going for the last of the run. '21 CrewMax TRD Sport arrives next week. Planning to drive it until the Tundra EV system shakes out for a few years. Maybe adopt electric in the late 2020s.
Just got a 2020 double cab sr5 5.7 and it handles 10klbs loaded 24 ft equipment trailer no problem. I think Toyota low balled towing #s because of hitch rating but the truck can handle more. I know multiple people who tow heavy and have well over 200k miles on these trucks and they are still going without end in sight also they have been towing since day 1. I ran from ford because of turbos, Chevy because of clyinder deactivation and trans issues, ram because I’ve already owned one and the engine was torn down twice by 200k miles. Only truck comparable is my other truck a 99 f350 7.3 diesel and well, that thing is a true dinosaur. Probably the most 2 reliable trucks on the planet.
Loved your review on the Toyota Tundra. Very insightful. I actually just bought a 2021 Toyota Tundra SR5 Package Double Cab. I love the way it drives to me its pretty maneuverable. Wish the MPG was a little higher but its a truck, what would you expect? I wish this model had a sun roof. I was going to buy the TRD Crew Max but I wanted a 6 1/2 foot bed. I would've loved to have a crew max with a 6 1/2 foot bad if it was available. Would've liked to see this model although not a TRD to have 20 inch black gloss wheels and deeper tread tires. I will be modifying this truck soon. Getting 22 inch wheels with new tires and and probably adding a leveling kit to raise it a few inches not going crazy for a 6 inch lift. Don't want it too high in which it might affect performance and drivability over time. But I'll have to do some research and think about it.
Why are all these car reviewers always commenting that a truck is too big? No kidding. That’s what we want. If a consumer wants small, buy small. Quit whining.
If history is prologue then Toyota should put the OBDII plug right the dash next to the radio because you are going to need it. Toyota hid and ignored an expensive fuel pump issue for 10 years now with over 3.2 million recalls that do not cover all vehicles.

Keep your v8 tundras... gonna be worth some cash soon!
Got my 2021 yesterday
@Chaz Surrett that’ll be next year... going to get rid of the V8
@A-a-ron the Ford 5.0 v8 is a solid truck. 👌
@No Ma'am why? Give me a good reason why you hate it.
That gas mileage though. What you're going to make from keeping you're going to loose at the pump lol.
Just got my 2021 Crewmax SR5 TSS Off-road package. Wanted to get one before they are gone. Love it so far
It’s not a gas saver but my company pays for my gas so...no worries 😊
Keep it as long as you can -
Instant Classic
My third gen Tundra impresses me everyday. With a few suspension enhancement mods, the truck is stable and sound when I’m maxed out on my tow capacity. Additionally, the fidos 🐕 love the rear window when it’s rolled down.
Which suspension mods did you install?
Love my 2015 SR5 Double Cab with 96K mi. I Force 5.7 all the way.
Did you get it done at Toyota ?
Does 2015 tundra has it?
@@UAkovalchuk yes. It does
@@john3801 no. I added it myself.
@@utid1957 thank u for the respond. I just bought 2015 crewmax trd off road with 70k miles...im really pleased with it....
Rock solid capable truck. Will be sad to see it go.
I love that it still comes with a key ignition
Why is that?
Sold my 2005 Tundra and bought the exact 2021 Tundra SR5 Trail Edition in Cement color. Love the 5.7 V8! Have made a few mods, and plan to do more. I don't really love the look of the new 2022.
I've had my tundra for 5 years now and I'm tired of the size as a daily. Fun engine though.
Love my manual transmission Tacoma. Looking forward to seeing what the new tundra comes out with
This is an old video.
I just love this car
But that’s just me I’m old school and don’t need anything all fancy 😃 thank you 🙏
You can get the 38 gal tank in the double cab?
Yes Sir , you certainly can 👍
How do you get it? Special order?
No , it’s the only one our dealer had at the time 👍 I was very happy to get it . No special order . I live in a rural country area . I think the trucks up here are chosen for country environment. Southern Oregon has more dirt roads than paved 😃👍
Got the exact same truck yesterday
38 gal. tank on my 2017.
Unless you’re towing heavy loads - not a Problem
Despite some things that aren’t class leading I absolutely love it!.. I’ve really come to value Toyota reliability.. love that basic raw V8, the huge crew cab and the overall look. The bed is annoyingly short and the bed boxes that you access from inside should be on the outside like the Ram but despite that I’d buy one in a second...
Well said! I opted for the DC, as I appreciate the 6.5' bed. Best truck period.
Not a tundra fan necessarily, but you can tell this dude drives a Prius for his daily driver.
He gets boots dirty on purpose
I just bought that same truck except non 4x4. Sitting right next to it was a 2011 with over 400k miles at CarMax asking 15k. It'll probably make 800k before it gives out. My dad's 2012 has almost 200k and no major issues, the only part actually changed was the alternator other than normal maintenance.
4.7 liter V8 love my truck Toyota is the best
Just the review I needed! Thx!
My 2014 tundra 5.7l sr5 crew max is basic 42,500.00 out the door. I love the rear widow
Did u buy it brand new?
Yes, I bought it when it was 100 miles on it back in 2014. But 7 years later the radio went out, now no radio, but I love the truck anyway
@@sotheamam1244 I have 2015 tundra Sr trd off road..what is the mileage on it now ??
I got tired of listening to this guy after 30 seconds ...Love my Tundra!
I feel like I am listening to JD Vance telling me about a Tundra. Good video. I am buying a certified pre-owned 2021 Tundra this week. Thanks for the information.
I assure you, you're not listening to JD Vance tell you about a Tundra.
@msmith617 no offense meant. I do have a question. Would a disconnected battery lead to a failed emissions test on a Tundra?
I have owned several and getting ready to buy another one before the redesign and new smaller engine
CarGurus: "You cannot look at a pickup truck today and say, 'It's too big...'"
Hyundai: "Hold my beer."
Good review! Could you comment on how the 2021 TSS does on “road noise” ?
Its a quiet truck as long as u dont run aggressive tires. Love mine
I have a 2018 Crew Max. Best truck ive ever owned.
The Ram 3500 6.7 Cummins is a haus of a motor
i love your videos
They have an identical truck at my local Toyota dealership, and I was about to go get it, until I realized they want 51k for it.
Wait till summer or after tax season. Prices are crazy even for a 90K mile Tundra.
Good deal
i see you have the wheelbarrow version. I'll prefer Me 8' box, thanx.
Cool
I own a 2019 Tundra. (3rd Tundra). Obviously I like Tundra. One of the biggest complaints that I have about my 19 is that the back seats are TERRIBLY uncomfortable! Especially for long distance trips! I hope Toyota addressed this in the 22 models!
Shoulda got a CrewMax
@@MrShragg I did! And STILL think that the back seat is very uncomfortable!
My 20 sport is me all day long last vehicle I’ll own !
He who laughs last, laughs loudest. "Last of the Old Trucks" three years later I for one am glad I have one of these "Old" trucks. The New ones are a wreck filled with flaws! Once again it has been proven that new is not always better!
Do all the Toyota tundra‘s back seats fold up yes now what years do fold up
2006 they haven’t changed only get better!!! With mine they only made certain paint
We have a 2021 trail edition ours is black
Wondering if Toyota is gonna put a V8 hydrogen engine in there at some point and go with a manual 5 or 6 speed tranny. Be friggin sick to see and I'd pick one up. Gonna have to be tough though considering if there's something to break, with me whipping around and down the trails in the middle of no where It's gotta be milsurp tough.
The fuel mileage and acceleration may improve with a rear end regear as it is geared quite low
Rear window full roll down and turning radius is in part why i bought it
I just got my dad a '21 Tundra SR 4x4 double cab in Barcelona Red. Price was just under $39k, $2k off MSRP. Tried looking for lightly used but they are literally selling for more money than brand new MSRP. Dad's planning on driving the truck for the next 20 years. IMO the current design is far more desirable for long-term ownership than the redesign.
just ordered a 2021 tundra limited. my last chance for a proven pickup and a v8.
I find it a little PITA having to climb into and over stuff in the pickup bed to gain access to those side storage boxes.
I might buy one of these once the new ones are unveiled, maybe they'll be selling way under MSRP?
2010 Tundra
233,000
Brakes
Tires
Oil
Shocks
Trans Fluid
Nothing Else
Zero problems
How does a 2020 have a push startbut not this 2021?
Does the tailgate lock with the key fob?
manual with key. no fob.
Got a Darrel waltrip edition Toyota Tundra crew cap 6ft bed
Why are all these car reviewers always commenting that a truck is too big? No kidding. That’s what we want. If a consumer wants small, buy small. Quit whining.
I love this truck but it burns gas ⛽️ like a steam train 🚂
What do you get around town? 12mpgs?
Steam trains burn coal not gas.
Greatest truck ever Built
Love my SR5 Tundra. 4x4 TRD Off-road... I want to get those storage boxes for my truck.
If history is prologue then Toyota should put the OBDII plug right the dash next to the radio because you are going to need it. Toyota hid and ignored an expensive fuel pump issue for 10 years now with over 3.2 million recalls that do not cover all vehicles.
I’m going to buy a 2021 before it’s too late!
Tundra for life, don’t change a thing
Just bought a 2018 Tundra TRD Off Road CrewMax 4x4. Had only 30k miles on this bad boy. So far it's definitely a keeper 👍
How much u payed for it?
@@UAkovalchuk $42k
I just bought 2021 Tundra all black package 54k
