    New subscriber and to quote Seth Skorkowsky's review video which I just stumbled upon last week. 'OMG Where has Traveller been in my life'. Aware of it obviously but never took the plunge. Long time A.H. (ASL)/TSR (D&D/Top Secret/Boot Hill) gamer since early 80's but only now, 40 years later, getting into Traveller and that is a great place and hard place to be. Thanks for your videos, been watching them and taking notes and find them extremely helpful. This vid in particular. After the 2022 core rules the natural question was .. what next to get? Going with the Companion but first setting book probably will be the Imperium book. Great review!

    Thanks for mentioning the current humble bundle, i was going to bring it up. They are well worth keeping an eye on, for a bunch of things. Have grabbed tons of good stuff through them for scifi and fantasy ttrpgs, computer games, and all sorts of general nerd-dom books etc. All proceeds for good causes too!!

    Great recommendations! After the core book, I'd definitely recommend the Catalogue and I've personally enjoyed The Pirates of Drinax more than any other Traveller supplement I've read in the past 40 years. That GM screen looks gorgeous. After seeing it here I'll definitely pick it up. REALLY enjoyed the Third Imperium book, too. Highly recommend!
    That bundle looks like a FANTASTIC deal. Even for someone who already has most of those titles, it seems just too good to pass up.

      Never cared for the setting as it's deviated so far from what I like in Traveller. Anything good in there to steal for other settings?

    • @TeflonDave
      @TeflonDave 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@docsavage8640 Good question! I dropped Traveller in the early 80's before much of the setting was developed, but I came back to it briefly in 2006 when Loren Wiseman (R.I.P.) went to SJG and they published GURPS: Traveller, and kinda liked it. Then not again until MGT2, and all of the material they've published has really made me enjoy the Charted Space setting and the vast history.
      It *seems* like much or maybe most of the story elements are pretty tightly wrapped around the setting assumptions. It takes a week to travel any distance from 1 to 6 parsecs. Most vessels only carry enough fuel for a jump or two. You need gas giants to refuel. No FTL communication means news spreads at the speed of ship. etc... However, I feel like Pirates of Drinax is one of the best sandbox campaigns I've ever seen for any "space" game. I think it might still work with different star travel mechanics. It's a nice framework.
      The Third Imperium book however, is really setting specific. It's basically a history of the Imperium and a gazetteer of current events. I think it's a cool look at the setting, but I suppose you could mine some of it for a similar setting with a quasi-feudal hierarchy? This is mainly algorithm bait at this point and WAY too long winded, but I'll look back over it and see if anything jumps out.

    At the moment there are 2 deals on Bundle of Holding - the starter set, companion, High Guard and more; the second is about Mercenaries and some adventures.

  • @rogue109
    @rogue109 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    @6:00 Not telling you how to run your Pirates, but the documentation itself has good ways to help make your players be invested in the adventure. Like making them nobles from the court of Drinax with an invested interest in helping the king succeed and make Drinax great again. Obviously if you have seasoned travelers and aren't making new characters, then this won't really work, but I think making new characters with vested interests in Drinax is the obvious way to engage them in the full storyline and not have them go rogue right away.

    One problem with the Humble Bundles is you may not get the latest versions of the PDFs. For example, the 2022 Core Update is not the June revision. I think it was the version from January or so. The biggest difference that matters that I saw was Varger have a -2 to STR at character creation and that has been errata'ed to -1 STR in the current revision. You can see the full three pages of errata on the Mongoose site but some is included in the PDF on the Bundle, some is not. No idea about any of the other PDFs in the bundle.
    Mongoose does not make it easy to determine the revision of printings of the PDFs.
    Note the Bundles of Holding put the PDFs in your DriveThru account so you get updates from that site. Not sure what revisions would come out of the accounts cabinet, though.
    !

    A handy guide to what is worth getting as a starter.
    Just as a note, the GM screen is no longer available direct from Mongoose, but may be available from retailers; it's also for the 2016 edition - they might be releasing one for the 2022 update, but it isn't on their release schedule at the moment.
