Why Is ROOTS REGGAE So Big In Africa?

  • Dancehall is officially the biggest sound in Jamaica today, after relegating Roots Reggae to second place a few years after the death of Bob Marley. It's also insanely popular in many parts of the globe.
But one place where that variant of reggae has sustained a fanatical followership over the past five decades is Africa. With a steadily growing followership that shows no signs of slowing down. This video traces how the continent's peculiar history has made it the perfect receptor for the conscious messaging and rhythms of Roots Reggae.

This is why it is so sad to hear what happened with Burna Boy allegedly dissing Steel Pulse. We don't need, and will not accept no division. We are one people.

Bob Marley, U Roy, Peter Tosh, Burning Spear, and Jimmy Cliff all performed Reggae in Africa. This planted the seed of Roots Reggae and it spread. African Reggae artists like Alpha Blondy, Lucky Dube, Majek Fashek, and Blakk Rasta emerged to carry the musical torch. Reggae has themes of African unity and liberation. In the revolutionary era of the 1970s , Reggae appealed to many Africans. It has remained popular to this day.

I must confess before I saw your videos, I didn't know how much reggae knowledge is kept in Africa and how broadly. I knew Africans love reggae and the main artists that tour there but I thought it was moee in pockets and in the main starts from Africa. I didn't know the knowledge was that deep and how is a whole new connection between some of the greats with their roots, a new perspective

I love the spread and celebration of Afro-Diaspora music/culture to the freedom of African nations.
This is why I find it bizarre that there is recent adherence to dismissing that love towards Afro-Diaspora cultural music.
