  • The epic and historical visit of Emperor Hailey Selassie I to Jamaica in 1966 is widely regarded as the spark that gave rise to Roots Reggae. This video traces the events and effects of that incredible event

Rocksteady was our music when H.I.M. visited the island…..It wasn’t until 1968 when Toots coined the word REGGAY as a musical term first appeared in print with the 1968 rocksteady hit "Do the Reggay" by the Maytals which named the genre….. In 1948, Haile Selassie made a substantial land grant to accommodate, for free, any Caribbean of African descent who wanted to “come home.” A wave of Rastafarian settlers in the late 60s made that community come alive. The land grant was in a village called Shashemane, deep in the beautiful Rift Valley, a six-hour drive south from Addis Ababa, the capital.

Coxsone Dodd always advocated the Rasta from way back in the early days of Studio One. That gave him the edge over Arthur "Duke" Reid in the coming years, as Reid, being a former policeman, hated ganja and the Rasta element.

Ironically, Marcus Garvey (who passed away in 1940) soured on Haile Selassie and viewed him as a “feudal monarch who looks down upon his slaves and serfs with contempt.” But by then, Marcus Garvey had since let the genie out of the bottle and pre-WWII Rasta adherents weren’t turning back😂.
