This song is a TRUE story that happened to the guitarist John Petrucci. He REALLY met in Italy a Count in Tuscany and the lyrics are what happened that day and his fearing for his life out of misunderstanding.
The whole album this song comes from is about real life experiences from Dream Theater. "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" (2009) is the album.
Nicollò and Sebastiano Capponi.
That album has one of the greatest album intros of all time for me. It sounds so ominous and evil.
The musicians in this band are 4 of the greatest masters of music that have ever been assembled into one group.

I love that chuck was able to transcend life itself from that "serene" part ownwards. As you said, it's a pretty long song (and not gonna lie, even as a Dream Theater fan of 12 years, that first part is also "meh" for me sometimes), but longer songs grow on some people. I've come to the point where I simply cannot do my remote work unless I have a really long song with changing themes on in the background haha... Glad you guys went through this experience!
First of all, no you cannot mosh with it, it's progressive metal, and they often don't stick to simple 4/4 patterns (not defending just explaining) therefore you cannot headbang with it. They usually change key and transition quite often so hard to catch to a RHYTHM.

Now first let me clear up my motive, I'm not denying your feeling, if it didn't appeal to you, so be it. Nothing wrong. You didn't find it enjoyable, I'm not trying to explain things so that you enjoy it, I'm just sharing my info and my opinion about this song.
As far as story, it is all there, nothing vague or untold, if the listener catches the difference between vocalist's singing style, they will get it, it's a conversation. Two different type of singing.
Let me walk you through it. It's about an adventurer tripping through Tuscany. The first part of song is building up the atmosphere of a delightful adventure. Then he sees an eccentric local, probably someone with distinguishable outfit. The guy takes the adventurer to his castle and somehow gives him a tour about who he is and what history and rumors lie there. In this piece the music gets thrilling, the adventure feels the excitement and a little fear within. Then the so called count shows him his brother (apparently dressed like count Dracula) and the cellar and the soldier stories so the music shifts more towards frightening. From adventurer point of view he is trapped among some cannibalism and vampires and he is deep down frightened. So he relapses into his happy memories (like someone before death), peaceful memories flash for him, the chillful part of the song. Then he comes back to reality and somehow tries to beg and asks the host to free him. (the acoustic part)
The host now suddenly understands that he has scared the adventurer to death, clears his intentions and tells the man this is how they live, no harm intended.
Which ends into sound of seagulls of Tuscany and the sense of freedom.
Now as a pioneer modern prog band, dream theater is well known for their build ups in music. And with this story they actually wanted to build up the sense in each part. And as you mentioned they are extremely good musicians instrument wise. So they have the habit of showcasing their ability on their epic songs. The part you were fascinated was actually guitar and keyboard harmonize in that insane pace!
There you go, nothing was random, and it was all engineered.
Does this mean you should like it now? Hell no! Listen to what pleases you, but I just wanted to clear some of the randomness.
I personally love dream Theater, I really enjoy long songs because of the build up mechanism and I love concept album and songs.

My favorite song by Dream Theater. This song has it all.
Dream Theater is not for everyone. Typically, Dream Theater fans are very musically inclined, and full-on appreciate music and not just head banging and all screaming and all metal all the time. At the end of the day, you know what they say about opinions....
About the "What is that ?" it was Jordan Rudess on synth with pitch bender, there's this and earlier in the song he does great stuff with it too.
The story is actually real, the guitarist John Petrucci went to Italy and met this guy, got afraid because of the culture differences and made a song out of it.
Great storytelling indeed ;).
The story is there, DREAM THEATER is not a one listen band. The more you listen the more you understand.

These are some of the greatest musicians in the history of music, at every position. Guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard. Lyrical bosses also. This song imparticular is an adrenaline rush! I love this song one of my favorites.

Always fun to see first reactions to Dream Theater! I think the real magic lies in the earlier installments of their catalogue, I'm particularly fond of the song Voices. LaBrie's voice was something else back then too.

@@CompleteProducer84 they’ve done videos on 3 Streetlight songs, 1 Catch 22 song, and 1 Dream Theater song. More to come my friend. And yeah Streetlight has been my favorite ska band since Catch 22 days, Dream Theater is my favorite metal band since 2004. Seen both bands live 5+ times.

Just like when Paul went into Athens and all of the professors of knowledge and they had a statue called the unknown God sitting in the midst of these philosophers and when Paul broke down what was happening they couldn't believe the words that was coming out of Paul's mouth! Anyway you guys look like these guys when they saw Paul speaking!

@@thethc4818 I know you were probably joking, but I wanted to chime and say these artists (and more) have all made great 20+ minute songs, off the top of my head: Haken, Symphony X, Galahad, Transatlantic, Flower Kings, Pyramid Theorem, Opeth, Seventh Wonder, Shadow Gallery, Circus Maximus, Rush, Green Carnation. In less "classic" prog, perhaps Tesseract's "Concealing Fate" (djent ish?) or even "Mirror Reaper" by Bell Witch, though that is funeral doom and possibly a much more acquired taste.

Why do you react to dream theater when you dont like long songs, long intros, musical journeys that takes you through a story. Filled with meaning and experiences from their lives and beliefs and whatnot. Its kind of their thing, being the godfather of progressive metal. Some of the best musicians of all time cooking up some real passionate music pieces.
Theres to much mass produced, souless and forget able music being made today. Only made for cash and profit through a quick unfocused listen on the radio. Sure, not all songs have to be 20 minutes long, not at all. But you gotta remember, they're made for people that really listens to music, not just bob their heads for 3 minutes. Made for multiple listens etc. Something you dont seem to appriciate.. So why? :/
You also got the lyrics totally wrong lol. You cant really say that the story is meh when you dont understand it but sure. Its about a trip to tuscany in italy that the gitarist had when he visited a count out in a totally remote.. Countryside i guess. Apparently he though he was getting murdered or something but the dude was just really strange, with strange customs, strange way of life etc.
