    Dream Theater is the embodiment of everything prog!! It's like if you put Genesis, Rush, Metallica, YES, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Iron Maiden and a few other bands in a Ninja blender and made the ultimate delicious and refreshing prog smoothie.

    Another incredible one is "Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence": the live rendition from their live album "Score" with an orchestra is truly a gem.

    May I suggest Illumination Theory, live from the Boston Opera House?
    To me, in that song, they proof not only their musical and technical skills, but also their understanding of music writing and how to connect it with the lyrics. Makes that song so dynamic. I think you'd enjoy that piece!

    This is easily my favorite DT song. It’s a little cheesy in the lyrics department, but the music is like a very fine wine so a little cheese is very welcome with it. That final crescendo at the end of the song is just utterly majestic in every way possible.

    Actually the ending sound effects are meant to reflect the theme of the album. Most of the songs are about a seemingly bleak circumstance that has a light at the end of the tunnel and a positive outlook. The album opens with a thunderclap (black clouds) and ends with birds over water here (the silver lining). DT can be very clever when they want.

    To respond to your question about tapping on the fretboard around the 11:50-ish mark, it's actually just alternate picking. It could be tapped, I suppose... but that would be far more difficult in this particular example.

    • @Moonsean24
      @Moonsean24 ปีที่แล้ว

      JP rarely use tapping technique, I check a live performance and confirm that use alternate picking

    Another great tune from DT. Give Transatlantic a listen too, it has Mike Portnoy from DT and Neal Morse from Spock's Beard in it. Also in this band is Roine Stolt from the band Flower Kings, and their song "The Truth will Set You Free" is great to hear and epic. Thanks for the Haken try Crystallised or Falling Back to Earth.

For a different band in the same style as this, I would recommend the instrumental piece "Biosfear" by Circus Maximus. ... Loving the channel, keep it up!

    I am glad to see you catching up with the modern prog masterpieces, and Dream Theater has produced more than a few of them. The next place in your Dream Theater journey should be a several-video reaction to their groundbreaking 1999 album _Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory._ You've already heard the song "Metropolis - Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper" but the concept album that is Part 2 is Dream Theater's most beloved release (some would put _Images & Words_ ahead of it, but they're wrong*). I think you're ready for the undisputed fan favorite, but if you are hesitant to commit to a whole album (which MUST be listened to in order for the first time...many of the songs do stand alone quite well, but they were never intended to do so,** and thus a proper first experience of this music should be the full album) maybe try another epic - "A Change of Seasons" which is probably Dream Theater's most beloved individual song ("Octavarium" is pretty close though, and you've heard that). Both paths will lead to an even greater appreciation of the Mike Portnoy era of this band (the only era worth listening to, in my opinion - Portnoy kept the band grounded, he balanced out the tendency to push the technical envelope with an extremely solid songwriting foundation that they have mostly lacked since 2010).
    *Images & Words (1992) was their first breakthrough album, wherein they became known to the prog community...and it is an amazing album, no doubt about that...but as a sophomore release, the songwriting therein was hit-and-miss (as they didn't have the experience needed to be reliably good at it). However, over the '90s, Dream Theater honed their craft until they peaked with four of the best prog metal albums we've ever been fortunate enough to hear: _Metropolis Part 2: Scenes from a Memory, Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, Train of Thought_ and _Octavarium._ That is SIX full years of setting the standard in their genre, more than double what most bands can achieve.
    **While you've heard "The Dance of Eternity" off of _Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory,_ I think re-listening to it in the album context is warranted.
