Thanks, it's a better fix than the gaffer tape I used which has helped cut down the top leak, although not cured it. I had the bottom leak into the spare wheel sump. That's been fixed by re-drilling the drain holes in the underneath voids. Still have the upper leak, despite the gaffer tape so will reseal the upper channel and see what happens.
Just bought Ford focus 15 plate. Had it 2 weeks. Got into the car and the windscreen was covered in a lot of condensation. Than found the problem when taking somet out of the boot. Left side panel was mouldy and drenched. Booked into my local garage but now after watching this video and others I think I can sort it myself and pretty sure it’s those vents behind the boot that are the issue. Great video mate 👌🏻
Bought myself a 11 plate Focus and always wondered by the spare wheel liner was always a bit musty smelling and very slightly damp. Thanks to your video, I know the key suspect areas to attack and find for myself.
I’ve got a 65 plate Focus Estate and have just sealed around the same area around the roof bars and hoping it sorts my leak out. Slightly different set up as it’s an estate but fingers crossed. Cracking video mate - really good for thousands of us who’ve fallen foul of this problem
This video is really informative. I had the same issue last winter. Lots of condensation inside the windows and the carpet on the driver's side absolutely soaked. I managed to locate the leakage points on those upper lap joints and I've also removed the rear bumper and dumped the soundproofing material from behind those pressure vents. Wet and dry vac to remove all the water from the carpet. Luckily the passenger side was dry. I had the carpet lifted and supported plus I placed a 12 volt waterproof heat pad under various areas of the carpet. Unfortunately, the under carpet soundproofing is very thick in parts and had acted like a sponge. I don't have a garage so it took around 6 weeks to dry out. The other problem which can arise, is the problem of mold. ThIs can be a nightmare to remove. A good brand of all purpose cleaner (with no bleach) is the way to eradicate the mold. It's a very tedious and time consuming process but once everything starts to dry out, then it's well worth the effort. Shame on Ford and other car manufacturers for producing such poor design and construction.
Agreed, definitely best to get stuck in early. The first signs of heavy condensation on the rear window inside is the tell tale sign. Thankfully mine never got to the mouldy stage although there was a slight whiff which started me off looking for the problems. I used paper kitchen towels to soak up the majority of the liquid and then propped the plastic boot liners open and used a hair drier to dry out the inside materials. Thankfully I have a garage I can work in to let the sealant set and dry the interior out easier, on the street in winter is a much bigger challenge. Thanks for the comment. 👍

I've re sealed the top seams after 2 years of service just in case and am now on the hunt for the wheel arch skin leak. It's either coming down from the top between panels and filling the void or getting in through a panel gap in the wheel arch (dirty water). I'll make a video when I find out.

@@aledhughes1796 On my 2 focus's they were clipped on. I just gently lifted them up starting at the back. (I lifted them straight up, don't twist them or they can break the clips on the strip)
@@dan91sgarage I’m losing the will with these leaks mine is behind the material stuff that’s covering the wheel arch inside the boot is wet whenever I touch it even when it’s not been raining I dry it and go back hours later and it’s dripping wet again I am losing patience with the car
Great video, my seam sealers above the bootlid and the roof channel looks similar, so i did sealed it with some silicone, my vents already been done by one of the previous ovners, and i still get a little bit of moisture after raining just under the rear seat backs, as i fold them down i can feel it on my hands, but no carpets wet anywhere. it's a weird one
Check the rubber boot seal around the boot opening is sealed to the body as they can leak here (mine did). Also the rear light clusters have foam seals where the bolts pull them onto the body and they can leak here too.
@@dan91sgarage Thanks, it's a 12 year old car i had it for a month, and someone already been at these places with silicone, the rear end and the carpets are dry, only where the floor goes under the back seats there is some dampness, so i don't think this comes from the rear end, like the seal etc as everything is dry there. but the carpet under the seat is also dry. i have done the seam seals like you did in the video, will see how that goes.
Thanks, Great video still relevant today! fixed the vents under the back bumper about 2 yrs ago (car was soaked, had to remove all interior inc cabin foam/carpet to dry out. Have just tiger sealed over the crack under my roof rail, and over the 2 body joins at top of boot and part way down hopefully that should sort it :D How did you get rid of the water that you found with the kitchen roll? did you just leave it to dry?
Just bought a 14 plate Focus and have noticed the boot is wet, but only on the left side and I can see it dripping down onto the wheel arch lining, it seems to be coming from just above the light. What option do you think I should try first (or tell the garage to try)? The bottom of the lining is soaked and around the spare wheel carpet but the right side is completely dry. Thanks
It's very difficult to say for sure, sometimes drips can be condensation forming on the metal above the light and not an actual leak! I always check the boot vents behind the bumper first, this is done by removing the round plastic plug under the car on the boot floor (shown at the begining of the video). If rancid water poors out then the vent is letting it in. I also had a panel seam leaking in the same area above the light so thats my second guess.
How do you take out that plastic thing that houses tools under the tire? There seems to be a clip but I can't figure out how to remove it without breaking
Had both seams cracked some black electrical tape was a temporary solution now after half a year it drips again, i have vents in the d pillar so i have visible drips going along the wiring and ending in the vent grille dripping down on the carpet, the roof gutter along the roofrack feeds directly in the seams so that won't help the situation i have a 2016 ST Estate/wagon
@@dan91sgarage just finished caulking the two seam above the boot. i cleaned and degreased the area, even lifted up the rubber around the boot opening, a lot of mud was collected under there. There were multiple cracks in the seam still a lot of paint though to my surprise. I taped the area around the seam to make it neat looking (sorry can't add pics to comments) scraped the excess with a plastic tool and after around half an hour later i used a wet finger to smoothen the area and then removed the tape, after that i used a blade to carefully tidy up around the sealer
Tiny update, i got around with priming and painting the repair it's invisible from a distance. For painting and priming i used these little paint containers with a brush inside. One primer, one clear and one color it was a hasstle to actually find the correct color number (stealth grey) but its a perfect match so i'm happy
So i have the exact same issue, that im gonna tackle thanks to you video, but with the root gutters, are they just clip on clip off or are they stuck down with some sort of adhesive?
If it is left to leak for long enough it can get into the spare wheel well, then when you brake it sloshes out under the rear seat into the car as well. On mine the felt material under the spare wheel was soaked and smelt mouldy.
Question! I took the car back from the garage that fixed the vents leak problem but I realised nor the bungs nor the foam are fitted back in the rear vents. Should I buy new bungs and fit it back in?
If your talking about the round plastic bungs I like to put them back in with a hole in them so if it leaks again the water can come out. Also stops mice crawling in!
Why so negative?! Once the leaks are sorted the Focus is actually quite a good car. Cheap to buy run and insure, parts are easily available and they are mechanically easy to work on with great access. And the performance models are great value. All modern cars have problems, I'd take a 90's Toyota over any of them, don't get me started on renault/Nissan or VAG stuff... lol.
I had a boot leak on mk2 that i eventually fixed(roof strips)mk3 just as bad, that should hav been sorted! Wheel nut caps distort so u cant change a tyre, i had to hack em off, noisy abs/suspension, broke seatbelt, Nice to drive but too many annoyin issue
@@richat1691 I've heard about the wheel nut cap problem, never experienced it myself using hand tools and torque wrench to tighten. When the cap peels off you need a 1mm smaller socket to remove and replace with new, Rattle guns do shred them quite easy though. Only had noisy front top mounts on mine which were old enough to just be wear and tear.

Good luck brother 👍
They just clip on and off. I started at the back, be careful not to twist them as they come up because this can break the clips on the gutter strip.
Was the water in the spare wheel well? Cheers
If it is left to leak for long enough it can get into the spare wheel well, then when you brake it sloshes out under the rear seat into the car as well. On mine the felt material under the spare wheel was soaked and smelt mouldy.
Thank you for the video
Ive a 2012 and mines got the same water ingress into boot
It's a common problem on the mk3 Focus's. But atleast its easy to fix and once sorted the Focus mk3 is a pretty good car really.
@@dan91sgarage thanks! I bought new ones and put them back. I was worried about the road water getting inside :(
Great video. Thank you
Glad you liked it!
Brilliant!
Thank you
Thank you
Welcome!
Thanks for the vide,I have same issues lol
Good and helpful video
Thanks Alan, turns out there was a few more leaks than just the boot vents!
Brilliant thx
i need your address so i can bring mine round its wet in boot near spare wheel , good old ford , great video ,
Thanks for the compliment. Unfortunately that's not a service I offer. I just make videos about things I do to my cars. 👍
Watch one video to solve 1 problem only to find a multiple problems going to be a busy weekend for me 😂
Have fun mate 🤣. Start with the vents, they're the usual suspect.
Thank you for your video on the boot leak I found it very helpfull and informative AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA++++++++++++++++++++++++ :)😄
You're welcome friend.
Don’t fancy fixing mine please
Not something I really do mate.
What a crap car, why is it so popular.
