China is also using ancient maps from the Ming Dynasty (1300s) to assert their claims. Well if they want to use Ming Dynasty maps, then return Tibet to the Tibetans, because according to the Ming Dynasty map, Tibet is not China

China aspires to be the hegemon in this region; yet repeatedly, it engages in acts of bullying and harassment towards its neighboring countries, such as Japan, India, the Philippines, Vietnam, and Bhutan. How can it expect to garner support when it fails to foster peaceful coexistence and cooperation? It baffles me since this behavior drives these countries to move towards the West, a consequence entirely of China's own provocations.

The unfortunate thing here is they are serving under shortsighted military officials who sent them out there without a plan against these gray zone tactics. The western command should have seen this coming as China is not above nor are they new to such tactics. They have used such tactics in their border skirmish with India, and have used this before on the Vietnamese before they eventually escalated it to actual lead exchange. They should have sent these men with hand weapons mainly for their own protection more than saving face in the media.

Nobody has any obligation to sign and ratify a treaty in the first place, but those who do are clearly obliged to abide by them, and arguing as much is hardly an act of hypocrisy.

The West Philippine Sea refers to the western territorial sea and western EEZ of the Philippines, which is the eastern part of the South China Sea. This is in accordance with international law and Philippine domestic law. Only the PH has sovereign rights over its EEZ. The other maritime countries surrounding the SCS also have their own EEZs that make up the SCS; like the northern sea of Indonesia (southern SCS) and the eastern sea of Vietnam (western SCS).

I don’t think it’s hypocritical for the US to utilize their rights under the maritime law. Even if the House and Senate fail to adopt the law, the US military needs to defend our national security and that means utilizing our rights to use other seas (beyond a certain distance from the country) under the maritime law.

closest continental landmass to Hawaii is the US, California to be specific. Closest island is tiny Kiritimati atoll.

If the Chinese Navy were to enter into a naval battle, it would be the first time in about 130 years since it suffered a devastating defeat at the hands of the Japanese Navy in the Battle of the Yellow Sea.

I disagree with the video comment that the claim by China to the atoll was "illegitimate" or in conflict with the UNCLS. The fact is under Article 209 (1)(a)(i) of UNCLS China has already declared that it does not accept the UNCLS Tribunal had right to determine China's claims for sovereignty over islands or atolls in, among others, the South China Sea.
It is in any event a mistake to think that the Tribunal had awarded the sovereignty of the atolls to the Philippines under the UNCLS. In the UNCLS Tribunal's Award on Jurisdiction and Admissibility delivered on 29 October 2015, para. 8 reads:
"8. Conscious that the Convention is not concerned with territorial disputes, the Philippines has stated at all stages of this arbitration that it is not asking this Tribunal to rule on the territorial sovereignty aspect of its disputes with China. Similarly, conscious that in 2006 China made a declaration, in accordance with the Convention, to exclude maritime boundary delimitations from its acceptance of compulsory dispute settlement procedures under the Convention, the Philippines has stated that it is not asking this Tribunal to delimit any maritime boundaries."
The eventual award was made on the false basis that China was NOT making a claim for "historical title" to the entirety of the South China Sea (which China has all along been claiming, and which would deprive the Tribunal of authority to hear the dispute). A Note Verbale from China to Manila on 6th July 2011 produced to the Tribunal, and which refers to "waters of which China has historical titles including sovereign rights and jurisdiction", was tersely assumed by the Tribunal as "an error in translation or an instance of imperfect drafting": see para. 227 of the Award delivered on to the 12 July 2016. By such ridiculous "assumption" over China's diplomatic letter, the Tribunal gave itself authority to determine the maritime rights between the Philippines and China under UNCLS which it had otherwise no power to decide.
The fact that China has, by the latest since the beginning of the 19th century been claiming sovereignty over all the islands and atolls of the South China Sea is well documented. When China refused to participate in the arbitration, such evidence was never presented by the Philippines to the Tribunal for understandable reasons. How on earth can one expect China to recognize the Tribunal's Award?
