Shower float days are my favorite, hawk n trowel , mud stand, 12 bags fat ,5 deck put on some good music and go. I really don’t care what new product the industry comes out with, I’ll always float my showers.
QUESTION: Drypack is used for swimming pools. How can it cure with the hardness it needs to, when so little water is added? The strength in concrete is a chemical bond, requiring the precise amount of water. Does the loose packing enable a bit of 'breathability'? Seems like this would be good for a shower floor, in that if there were a leak, it could pass through the dry-pack better than if it was just dense mortar...
I couldn't find any fat mud in any big box store in my area, and they only told me mapei 4 to 1 mud mix, which seems only can be used on the floor. I am wondering can i use it as a replacement of fat mud for the wall?
Great idea👍 Interesting that you’re using Quikrete, a 4:1 mix and mention Laticrete and Mapei, all 4:1 mix. In past I thought I’ve seen you use Dyna 710, which I believe is 5:1 mix. My guys prefer the Dyna and Sika-BMI which is also a 5:1 mix. When we’ve had supply issues during pandemic, they’ve even mixed their own but finding a really consistent fine sand can be difficult. The higher sand ratio makes a more workable product in our experience. Thanks for the garbage bag tip, I’ll share with my tile crew.
Isaac, would you suggest deck mud for leveling a slab foundation? I used 2800# of VINYL CONCRETE PATCHER on 1000sqr foot since it would go feather edge for Vinyl plank flooring. There were roller coaster when you walked around the house. Screeded each room, followed by hand grinding high spots. Was not impressed with floor leveler, cost and it did not actually level in a test room. Deck mud looks way easier to screed with limited grinding high points.
I have this issue. Concrete patcher is not recomended for large areas. Can't imagine laying down a complete floor of fat mud, that would be a nightmare. Deck mud for the deep areas then concrete resurfacer for the final 1/4"
Hi Isaac. Thanks for all the great videos. We're redoing our main bathroom and are tiling from floor to ceiling on all 4 walls. Do you still float a mortar bed on all 4 walls when you do similar projects or is it a combination of backer board and mortar?
Ive had problems with the dyna crete deck mud. When it dries the next day when i put my sheet membrane down the small grains of sand can poke holes in my membrane. Is there a way to make that not happen. I do flat trowel it with water at the end. Is there a better product to use to get a smoother finish on top?
Can u make a video of a wall that is 10 by 10 is 100 sqf and a bag of fat mud. Covers 10 square feet. With a width of half inch thick so how many bags do we need for that wall
Hi Isaac , when build a mud pan in shower , what brand or what is the name of the deck mud should I get from " Home Depot " can you show what is the bag looks like ? Thank you
Get a job with a experienced tile guy and work for at least 6 months to a year. Trust me I tried doing the same thing and ended up backtracking and doing that. I consider myself a great worker and take lots of pride in my work. Even though I am a very intelligent guy and a quick learner taking on the tile jobs, especially shower tile jobs, is a completely different beast in itself and hard to perfect from just starting out.
i did my first shower deck mud the 5:1 all purpose sand and portland cement it came out ok i have some small holes less than 1/8" but i have one 3"x3" and 3/8" deep it's stable no more lose stuff i brushed and vacuum the floor it' not smooth. can i apply kerdi all set very thin and fill up the holes with it next day i will put the kerdi membrane ? i do not wanna take it down and redo it. thanks
hello need your help.. I have a bathroom floor 8 x 9 with tiles. I want to remove the tile and replace it with new. 24 x 24.. should I remove the the mud floor with steal mesh and add new 7/8 inch plywood and then retile? or is it better to leave the old mud and remove the old tile and install new 24 x 24 tiles on top of the old mud floor.. basically what's best remove the mud floor and replace it with 7/8 plywood?
Just leave the old mud as it can provide support for your new floor. If you do a tear out it’s going to be tons of work and money for the same result. Yw. 😉
Wow, that’s a good question… I’d like to know that myself. This video is probably to old for him to see the comment but if you found that out please reply back. Ty
Can you use deck mud to support a fiberglass tub that is already installed? I have access to the front and back of the tub with access panels. It's sitting on feet about 5" off the concrete slab with wood shims underneath. But it's creaking when you stand in it. Also considering Great Stuff Big Gap Foam. Thoughts?
Your videos are perfect for not only the homeowner but the contractor has who has made mistakes, love learning, keep your knowledge coming…

Does deck mud eventually dry solid?
yes. the less water you use the harder your concrete will be. just make sure to compact it properly.

Deck mud sounds like "Sand Mix" in the East?
Sand mix is what we use in the north east for shower floors. sounds like the same stuff.
Fat mud sounds almost like mortar mix?
