Having witnessed his parents' brutal murder as a child, millionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne (Michael Keaton) fights crime in Gotham City disguised as Batman, a costumed hero who strikes fear into the hearts of villains. But when a deformed madman who calls himself "The Joker" (Jack Nicholson) seizes control of Gotham's criminal underworld, Batman must face his most ruthless nemesis ever while protecting both his identity and his love interest, reporter Vicki Vale (Kim Basinger).

I always held such a respect for the reporter guy. He didn't have the experience, resources, or strength of "Batman" or even a police officer. But, he did what he could to get at least one balloon further away which definitely saved some lives. An unseen gesture done by one good ordinary man that likely would never be recognized but made a significant difference. Still an "every man"hero.
Indeed, I'm glad he survived too.
Honestly never thought about Knox's sacrifice like that as a kid. And he did that expecting to die to, either from the gas, or by the thugs he attacked. 35 years on, and there's still new tidbits of character in this film to experience. Possibly inspired by Batman's bravery, or simple attraction to Vale, or maybe he just needed a clear and present moment to define the man he wanted to be remembered as. Thanks for this comment.

I still have this movie on VHS. Of all the Batman films ever made, the Michael Keaton ones are my favorite.

This Batman scene starts as one of the truest to the Bats character. When he shows up, he doesn't immediately attack the Joker. He prioritizes the safety of Gotham and her citizens. It is the people who matter to the Bat.
That was the point joker did this parade to get Batman to come out he knew Batman was aware him out to harm everyone would get Batman to come out it was personal and a tactic

The "cartoony" Joker still killed more people than Ledger, Leto and Phoenix combined. It's honestly laughable at this point that people wanna write off Nicholson as goofy in favor of the flashier Jokers when Nicholson was the one who opened the doors for them all in the first place.

The whole poison balloons scene scare me to death as a kid. As soon as they appear with the Prince music (if I recall correctly) I simply could not watch it.
Even though the rest of the movie (and way more violent movies like Robocop) didn't bother me a bit.

Gotham really has the most useless police department in fiction. Joker straight up said where he was going to be and they don't even try to get there in advance and stop him.
If the parade is to be redone with metal detectors, for the sake of gaining as much trust as possible, I think the plastic bags with money should definitely be see-through ones.

If this scene is to be done realistically, the police should attempt to arrest The Joker and his henchmen via sniper rifle police officers in the surrounding buildings. In a realistic version, I think sniper rifles should be developed in this film, to ensure an incident like this parade is never allowed to occur again. It can be unveiled along with The Bat Signal at the end of the movie.
