Man, for being a mere henchman, he was by far the most formidable one against Batman and gave him the fight of his life! With such fighting skills and weaponry, he put up a hell of a fight before Batman finally got the better of him. And just for laughs, I love that giant ring when his head is bashed against the bell before he fell to his demise! Everytime I watch football clips of brutal hits, or body slams, that bell sound rings in my head. 😅😅😅😅
It's highly unusual to see a superhero get demolished like this by a nameless goon. And one with no superpowers either. Just monstrous, brute strength and tenacity.
Such a short scene, but Batman went from 0:00 so self-confident in saving Vicki and stopping Joker, 0:44 surprised somebody would dare jumping on him, 1:52 running out of ideas how to beat the Joker's big goon, 2:03 worry and fear about losing the fight, 2:13 surrender and resignation. Every superhero meets a stronger opponent. This was Batman's...
The strongman in Batman Returns did nothing compared to this goon. I remember seeing both movies in the theater and being very disappointed with the Penguin's strongman after what I saw this beast did to Batman in this movie. I really wish Burton had done more with that big guy in the second film.
@kevinphillips2992 look at it this way. Batman is a smart guy who learns from his mistakes and screw ups. So maybe that scene in the sequel was him learning his lesson from this scene lol.
In the novel, this guy Bozo 3, he took a straight paralyzing hit to the solar plexus from Batman & all the guy did was grunt & then immediately straightened & grinned.
This dude’s a monster. Even with the bat suit on, those punches sound like they hurt. Imagine if that dude punched him without the suit on. I feel like we’re talking internal bleeding and ruptured organs 😬.
I imagine he already had cracked ribs and internal bleeding from the batwing crash. And despite what some say, those punches still hurt. But the armor prevented them from hurting him as much as they would have without it. If they didn't hurt at all he wouldn't have rolled with them. He would have just stood still like he did when Joker punched him.
The lighting in this movie is the best part. It's a feeling I can't describe. Not a happy positive one but one fitting for the real movie Tim Burton wanted to make
After crashing in the batwing, climbing the stairs of the cathedral, Batman hurries up to save Vicki and apprehend Joker... In the belfry he meets Joker's strongest goons. Batman's got a special weapon to incapacitate the first one (RIP balls :D) The second one has a daring plan to jump on Batman but falls just short of bringing him down (adios, Lawrence). What to say about the third one? The strongest opponent Batman had to fight in the first three movies: big, tall, skilled, unafraid, motivated to bring Batman down. Batman's clearly the underdog in this fight: getting surprised from behind, tossed through the wooden wall, he tries to kick the black goon (his signature move in this movie), but he soon sees he's physically not a match for him. For a while all he can do is evade and hide. For the people who argue Batman lures the big black goon into a trap: I know the movie makers want us to believe that, but... getting thrown into the stairs, getting headlocked, getting punched in the body, face and balls, then kicked in the face and thrown into the bell floor hole seems like A REALLY BAD PLAN :) We know Batman's gonna win in the end (since the movie is called Batman :D), but you gotta admit... he was wearing a lot of plot armor here :) I love this scene
I don't mind that Batman killed him. But, people tend to forget that he outsmarted the muscle guy. Outsmarted, and used stealth...which is 100% Batman. This, Returns, BvS and no doubt The Flash all got Batman correct. Although, I consider Keaton the greatest of them all, with Affleck in a close second.
When batman did that roll move...WTF KINDA HAND TO HAND COMBAT WAS THAT.. ? It was like he had his hands tighted behind his back..he just pushed his hands up and starts giving him shots to the body...keatons batman was the worth fighter next to pattinson.
Batman struggled w that guy because he was already hurt so he wasn't as fast or strong. plus that guy was probably huge strength wise. The roll was going with the force. Martial arts was in tai kwon do. That kick was supposed to weaken if not dislocate his hip but realized he was too big.
Batman: I don't kill. This batman. Drops a guy several stories down. No way he survived that. Also tied jokers leg to a gargoyle which ends up killing him.
I wish Batman tried to hit the last goon with an overhand punch while the goon ducks underneath and counters with another solid, punishing gut punch. That would have nicely showcased just how weak, tired and vulnerable he truly was.
I recall a friend once jokingly pointing out how the thug who was the closest in beating Batman in brute strength in this scene was black while the one who was the most acrobatic and got owned the easiest was Asian.
And they say batman never kills but Michael Keaton's Batman does it here also man that Ray Charles Goon was really beating Batman here where he had no choice but to kill where the others goons failed especially that one who fell through the floor. Lol
I think the reason the last goon wasn't able to pull Batman's legs off his neck was because he hurt his hands too much punching that hard bulletproof armor. I imagine it was like punching solid steel. I don't know how he was able to withstand that. He kept beating Batman relentlessly into submission.

I think the realization that he's in for a world of hurt crept in there too around 0:51.
That Batman vs black strongman fight was basically 2 strong beasts fighting.
''When an unstoppable force meets an immovable object''.
First time he struggled with an opponent
That unstoppable force (his fists) definitely made the immovable object (his body armor) move.
This scene and the strongman dynamite scene in the sequel was the closest thing Burton's Batman had to fighting his equivalent of Nolan's Bane.
