This aircraft does not have NK-12 engines; that is the type used on the much larger An-22 (which is totally smokeless even on take-off). The An-12 has the Ukrainian Ivchenko AI-20 engines. These are smoky at take-off because they are optimised for cruising operation but the power is boosted for take-off by dumping the air from the first two compressor stages (presumably to keep temperatures manageable) and adding rather more extra fuel than will burn completely. Most American jet engines of the same era were just as bad for smoking (or worse; see photo of B-47 take-off), and not always just at take-off power. Remember that all An-12s (apart from Chinese-built ones, which are still in production) are between 45 and 60 years old.
For the last two or three years An-12s have regularly passed over where I work in the UK, heading south from Birmingham or East Midlands airports. Very often their engine speeds are not synchronised (as shown in this video), and this leads to interesting sound effects as heard from the ground. During World War 2, bomber crews would unsynchronise their engines when over enemy territory because this made it difficult for a listener on the ground to tell which direction the sound was coming from.
They are designed to be able to use runways of gravel, grass, snow etc. The high-wing layout minimises the risk of the engines getting damaged through sucking in loose material from the ground.

А потом эти Ан-10 начали падать. А вот эти, Ан-12 - до сих пор летают, иногда вижу их в небе (у меня загородное "имение" недалеко от четвёртого разворота).

Man, the NK-12 sure is one dirty engine! Now, the T56 does leave a smoke trail, but, it's faint, compared to that of the NK-12.

Propellers are interesting to watch on a computer or TV screen. The 60 cycle flicker creates optical illusions of the props going slower or backwards.
You can also see the No. 2 engine doesn't spin at the same rpm as the other three...
