When was the last time you saw a plane that size in a knife edge flight? :) The point is, you don't see those planes flown to their limits every day, so I find it amazing to have a chance to watch something like this, even though it makes sense for an aircraft with a partly military background to have these capabilities. I'm with you about Antonov, only I'm not sure about Europe _not seeing_ their potential. European companies may see them as a competitor, so they're not motivated to help making them stronger and European countries have to consider the Russian position on such a matter.
1. Well, the C27J has a length of 22.7 meters, while the An-178 is 32.95 meters long, to name just one dimension. Doesn't look like the same kind of size to me. ;) 2. Again I'm not quite sure if protecting Europe's industry is the only convincing explanation here. Especially in this case: As far as I know, Antonov is in a difficult economical situation by now, which makes them look like a takeover target rather than a competitor for companies like Airbus. And remember, it was Ukraine moving closer to the EU that made the conflict with Russia break out and although I don't _share_ Russia's fear about another state with close relations to the West right at their border, I can _understand_ it.

Der Daumen nach oben reicht ja auch. :) Vor Ort ist mir ja ganz schön der Mund offen stehen geblieben, als ich die Flugzustände gesehen habe, in die sie die An-178 gebracht haben, ohne die Kontrolle zu verlieren. Den kurzen Messerflug zum Beispiel hätte ich bei einem Flugzeug dieser Größe in dieser Flughöhe nicht für möglich gehalten.

Сила Антея была только тогда когда он твердо стоял на земле . Но когда в борьбе Геракл поднял Антея от земли силы Антея иссякли и Геракл задушил его и сломал позвоночник. Выпущено было этого действительно прекрасного самолета всего 68 шт. АН 225 Мрия(Мечта)- мечта всегда мечта. тем она и хороша что можно помечтать о чем то хорошем и несбыточном.Построено один экз. Но так как мечты почти всегда неосуществимы второй фюзеляж гниет в Куеве в цеху. Шансов достроить его как у меня стать вновь 18 летним юношей .мне 50 лет а значит шансов НОЛЬ. можно только МРИЯТЬ (мечтать).АН 124 Руслан. Руслан был убит Фарлафом. Но его оживил Финн с помощью живой и мертвой воды. Итог: Только у АН 124 Руслан есть шанс если его найдет Финн (Россия) и оживит его.Но только в Ульяновске. У этого АН 178 нет шансов выжить. Мертворожденный проект.Народное имя не дало ему шансов.

Thank you. I've been watching the beautiful Mryia long before she got her yellow and blue paint colors, maybe since about the early to mid '90s. I saw her land in Denmark once -- a fascinating aircraft. But I'll check your site too. I saw the AN-178 at an air show in the U.K. quite a few years ago, but, thankfully, there were no crashes that day.

An-178: длина 32.23м x размах крыльев 30.57м x высота 9.65м. Да, KC-390 действительно значительно дороже, но ведь он в отличии от украинского самолёта сертифицирован и завершил программу лётных испытаний! Кроме того KC-390 имеет десятки заказов. Gotta feel it for Antonov, lost the Russian market, and western defense forces are unlikely to purchase regardless of how good they are. China would only buy to reverse engineer. Damn, they design and make such fine aircraft.
The west is actually doing quite a bit to help Antonov recover from Russia's treachery. Boeing signed a huge contract with Antonov in 2018 in order to help them transition to the western market and redesign their airplane manufacturing process to replace parts that used to be imported from Russia with their western analogs. Antonov initially took a big hit from Russia cutting them off but in the long run the partnership and pivot towards the west will make Antonov far more successful than it could have ever been if things stayed the same.

I don't know for sure, but the An-178 is based on the An-148 and that has the ability to operate from small airports. In comparison, the An-178's landing gear was altered and it has a partly military background, so if anything, it's even better suited for operating from small airfields.

wow super critical wing, not just the aircraft's maneuverability but it can fly in the trans sonic regime quite efficiently, meaning it's fast n good on gas....no mean feat designing a wing like that, it's so tough that most designers leave it alone as you are forced to incorp high lift devices into a complicated flowing shape..typically we see a butchered compromised version of it on other aircraft (BAC 146, some earlier gulf streams, hawker, falcon's etc).. as the development cost is too high for the performance gain.. either the antonov boys have figured a cheap way of building one , this entails using a single piece of aluminium billet for the entire length of the wing and act as the spar as well..airbus does it like this, with a fair rejection rate, just ask the boys in Cheshire, not cheap but worth it on the big runs of aircraft and the revenues they expect to get form them.. The russians typically use the wing as the starting place in their design philosophy and build the plane around it.. ala mig 29...the same philosophy most likely went into this bird as well.. in the long run it will pay off.. if they can sell enough of em cheap enough, and put together a nice geared turbine down at perm/sovoliev/ energomash/tumanski/aviavigatel/Kuznetov/Klimov/NPO Saturn/powerjet . conglomerate they should have a plane that can out perform a q 400, on the same gas, with quick turn arounds.. might replace them on some routes and open up others for carriers, it'll be biting at the heals of embraer, and bombardier on regional routes pretty soon.. Russians just gotta learn how to market the damn things ( no word in russian for marketing, or business).. great plane , would love to ride in one some day ..

LEJ.approach/dvldi it was a big thing here, in Ukraine. During test flights spotters noticed that plane had a couple of metal counterweights under the cockpit. and they thought that antonov fucked up weight balance. then antonov officials claimed that it was just for cargo placement tests.
Yes. It's all so "amazing" until it crashes and then people jump all over the design and the pilot's error. This does not seem so amazing - empty plane, minimal fuel.......seems to maneuver about average for it's size class...
Actually, depending on the plane, they fly full of equipment that they drop in the ground during a low pass or touch and go. Seen a tank get stuck half way out and with its drag chute, the plane quickly sank and crashed..... Sad, scary and disheartening when you realize it's your self defense arm that doesn't have all their sh!t together.....
panther105 - What you describe here is not even allowed on airshows here in Germany and I was referring to the kind of "aerobatic display" the video shows, not a military demonstration. Another thing you should take into account is, that the flight display in the video was shot at a minium of 200mm focal length. The human eye is said to have around 50mm, so all of this is magnified by a factor of at least 4. That's how high you are required to fly when doing flight displays in Germany!

Appears to be very agile and stable in flight. The maneuvers it performs are impressive. Antonov has a good history of some very successful aircraft.

I've seen a B-52 attempt that knife-edge turn. To be fair, it didn't end well.

The B-52 is a 65 year old airframe. You're comparing apples to oranges. A Tu-95 wouldn't fare any better.

Vor Ort ist mir ja ganz schön der Mund offen stehen geblieben, als ich die Flugzustände gesehen habe, in die sie die An-178 gebracht haben, ohne die Kontrolle zu verlieren. Den kurzen Messerflug zum Beispiel hätte ich bei einem Flugzeug dieser Größe in dieser Flughöhe nicht für möglich gehalten.
Wichtig ist, dass die Speed beim Messerflug stimmt...mit einem A380 wäre das auch möglich ;)

помню на бывшей украине был объявлен конкурс на лучшее название этого самолета. Победило название Степан Бандера.Но руководство смотрело советский мультик. Приключение капитана Врунгеля. а он говорил как вы яхту назовете так она и поплывет.Все названия самолетов КБ Антонова имеют несчастливые названия. АН 22 "Антей". Сила Антея была только тогда когда он твердо стоял на земле . Но когда в борьбе Геракл поднял Антея от земли силы Антея иссякли и Геракл задушил его и сломал позвоночник. Выпущено было этого действительно прекрасного самолета всего 68 шт. АН 225 Мрия(Мечта)- мечта всегда мечта. тем она и хороша что можно помечтать о чем то хорошем и несбыточном.Построено один экз. Но так как мечты почти всегда неосуществимы второй фюзеляж гниет в Куеве в цеху. Шансов достроить его как у меня стать вновь 18 летним юношей .мне 50 лет а значит шансов НОЛЬ. можно только МРИЯТЬ (мечтать).АН 124 Руслан. Руслан был убит Фарлафом. Но его оживил Финн с помощью живой и мертвой воды. Итог: Только у АН 124 Руслан есть шанс если его найдет Финн (Россия) и оживит его.Но только в Ульяновске. У этого АН 178 нет шансов выжить. Мертворожденный проект.Народное имя не дало ему шансов.

Thank you. I've been watching the beautiful Mryia long before she got her yellow and blue paint colors, maybe since about the early to mid '90s. I saw her land in Denmark once -- a fascinating aircraft. But I'll check your site too. I saw the AN-178 at an air show in the U.K. quite a few years ago, but, thankfully, there were no crashes that day.

An-178: длина 32.23м x размах крыльев 30.57м x высота 9.65м.
Да, KC-390 действительно значительно дороже, но ведь он в отличии от украинского самолёта сертифицирован и завершил программу лётных испытаний! Кроме того KC-390 имеет десятки заказов. Ну и столь же важно то, что KC-390 имеет массу преимуществ которые вполне могут оправдывать его более дорогую цену:
- KC-390 имеет существенно БОЛЬШУЮ грузоподьёмность;
- KC-390 имеет БОЛЬШУЮ cкорость;
- KC-390 имеет БОЛЬШУЮ дальность;
- KC-390 расходует существенно МЕНЬШЕ топлива;
- KC-390 требуется существенно МЕНЬШАЯ длина полосы для взлёта и посадки, следовательно может использоваться на существенно большем количестве аэродромов;
- KC-390 в стандартной комплектации может заправляться в воздухе;
- KC-390 в стандартной комплектации в воздухе может заправлять другие самолёты;
- KC-390 в стандартной комплектации в воздухе может заправлять относительно медленно летящие вертолёты;
- KC-390 в стандартной комплектации может работать заправщиком и на земле;
- KC-390 использует значительно более мощные двигатели;
- KC-390 использует одни из самых распространённых в мире двигателей (они так же используются и на самолётах семейства Airbus А320), следовательно не будет проблем с обслуживанием и запасными частями для них;

Gotta feel it for Antonov, lost the Russian market, and western defense forces are unlikely to purchase regardless of how good they are. China would only buy to reverse engineer. Damn, they design and make such fine aircraft.
The west is actually doing quite a bit to help Antonov recover from Russia's treachery. Boeing signed a huge contract with Antonov in 2018 in order to help them transition to the western market and redesign their airplane manufacturing process to replace parts that used to be imported from Russia with their western analogs. Antonov initially took a big hit from Russia cutting them off but in the long run the partnership and pivot towards the west will make Antonov far more successful than it could have ever been if things stayed the same.

I don't know for sure, but the An-178 is based on the An-148 and that has the ability to operate from small airports. In comparison, the An-178's landing gear was altered and it has a partly military background, so if anything, it's even better suited for operating from small airfields.

wow super critical wing, not just the aircraft's maneuverability but it can fly in the trans sonic regime quite efficiently, meaning it's fast n good on gas....no mean feat designing a wing like that, it's so tough that most designers leave it alone as you are forced to incorp high lift devices into a complicated flowing shape..typically we see a butchered compromised version of it on other aircraft (BAC 146, some earlier gulf streams, hawker, falcon's etc).. as the development cost is too high for the performance gain.. either the antonov boys have figured a cheap way of building one , this entails using a single piece of aluminium billet for the entire length of the wing and act as the spar as well..airbus does it like this, with a fair rejection rate, just ask the boys in Cheshire, not cheap but worth it on the big runs of aircraft and the revenues they expect to get form them..
The russians typically use the wing as the starting place in their design philosophy and build the plane around it.. ala mig 29...the same philosophy most likely went into this bird as well.. in the long run it will pay off.. if they can sell enough of em cheap enough, and put together a nice geared turbine down at perm/sovoliev/ energomash/tumanski/aviavigatel/Kuznetov/Klimov/NPO Saturn/powerjet . conglomerate they should have a plane that can out perform a q 400, on the same gas, with quick turn arounds.. might replace them on some routes and open up others for carriers, it'll be biting at the heals of embraer, and bombardier on regional routes pretty soon.. Russians just gotta learn how to market the damn things ( no word in russian for marketing, or business).. great plane , would love to ride in one some day ..

LEJ.approach/dvldi it was a big thing here, in Ukraine. During test flights spotters noticed that plane had a couple of metal counterweights under the cockpit. and they thought that antonov fucked up weight balance. then antonov officials claimed that it was just for cargo placement tests.

Yes. It's all so "amazing" until it crashes and then people jump all over the design and the pilot's error. This does not seem so amazing - empty plane, minimal fuel.......seems to maneuver about average for it's size class...
What a surprise! On airshows they fly empty planes with a minimal amount of fuel? You don't say!
Actually, depending on the plane, they fly full of equipment that they drop in the ground during a low pass or touch and go. Seen a tank get stuck half way out and with its drag chute, the plane quickly sank and crashed..... Sad, scary and disheartening when you realize it's your self defense arm that doesn't have all their sh!t together.....
panther105 - What you describe here is not even allowed on airshows here in Germany and I was referring to the kind of "aerobatic display" the video shows, not a military demonstration.
Another thing you should take into account is, that the flight display in the video was shot at a minium of 200mm focal length. The human eye is said to have around 50mm, so all of this is magnified by a factor of at least 4. That's how high you are required to fly when doing flight displays in Germany!

Хороший самолет. Но летать может только с металлическими плитами весом в две тонны расположенные прямо за кабиной экипажа. Виной всему неправильные расчеты. Самолет получился с предельной задней центровкой.Всему вина перехода на украинскую мову в техдокументации и проектировании.Все нормальные специалисты уехали в Китай и Россию а в КБ пришли селюки не знающие русский язык. Мертворожденный проект. Как и сама бывшая украина.

The An-178 is based on the An-148 and _its_ design phase started in 2001 (An-178: 2010) and if you look it up, you'll find Ukraine became independent a full ten years earlier. Now, what Soviet airplane do you believe, the An-148/An-178 is based on?

The Carrera GT doesn't have a flat 6, but a naturally aspirated 5.7l V10, originally developed for racing Le Mans.
