    My parents have a 2500 Suburban with the 8.1L, I remember we were towing a 21 foot boat going up a very large ramp from one freeway to another in overdrive with the cruise control on 85 and it never lugged back or lost mph, if anything it was accelerating and didn't have to drop a gear. It was a very underrated platform that lost all the glory to the new Duramax. It's an excellent choice for an ugly truck.

    You are going to LOVE that 8.1! Owned 2500HD CC/4x4 with the 8.1/Allison for 16 years. Burned no oil, ran like a top. Gobs of torque. Did have cold start knock, but only for 30 seconds or so. Don't ever check MPG...just put your right foot down and smile! : )

    Another awesome video!! So you kind of inspired me to finally buy my first truck. I scored a heck of a deal on a 2003 Silverado 2500, not an HD. Has a 6.0 LQ4, 4L80E, 281K miles and I got it for $1,500 from a friend's tow yard. Super stoked to finally have a truck.

    Very cool. Although LS stuff is a tried and true platform that's great, I also like being different. My '86 C10 has a 514" Caddy. Can't wait to see that 8.1 fire up! *Fun fact, the 8.1 as well as all the old traditional big blocks were built in Tonawanda NY. 40 miles from my home. All the current LT engines are built there today.

    Cadillac 500 was an awesome engine! Production began in 1970 exclusively in the Eldorado. It was rated at 400 HP and 550 lb-ft torque. I believe compression was 10.5:1. From 71 to 76 it was available across the Caddy line, standard depending on model and/or trim. 77 & 78 they were available by special order in factory limos only; GM pretty much dropped big blocks from all passenger car lines after 1976. Cadillac was their "Golden Child" and could get away with it.
    My buddy and I installed a 71 500 in his 71 Trans Am in the early 80s. The 4th hard launch ripped the passenger-side subframe mounts out of the body. The 500 went to the back corner of his dad's shop and the TA went to the crusher. The 500 may still be there!
    Anyway, I think the 8.1 is a great idea! "If it don't go, cube it!"

I also have JBA shorty headers into stock exhaust and installed 4:56 gears last summer. Truck tows a 15,000 lb. 5th wheel. LT
    I drive an 05 GMC 5500 rollback for a living and speak from experience when I say the 8.1 has plenty of torque to move a 12,000 lb. Truck down the road. So you should have more than enough to get in a little trouble. With that being said, I'm considering the same swap into my square body stepside. As far as I know Raylar engineering is the only company for aftermarket support of this motor.

    If you can show the world how to make power cheap with an 8.1 you'll be a hero! Whenever I hear "weak pistons" I think not enough ring gap, so hopefully before it gets boost you pop the pistons out and at least check the gap if not open it up.

I did hurt it a little burned the brakes pulling 18,000 lbs. up & down a hill not too steep but it was enough to scream the engine to 220 degrees once I reach the top. Still runs but won't be towing that much anytime soon. I need a rebuild or maybe find me an 8.1L or stroke my current engine. I just subscribed be interesting to see the build. I bought a 50' Buick last year which came with a small block and an auto from a (what I was told) mid 90's Impala, mounted in the front clip of a 77' Monte Carlo. It also has the axle from the said Impala. I'm in the planning stages of its next build right now. Yes the LS is an awesome platform with a ton of aftermarket support... but like everyone says... it's been done. I've always been different anyway, so I'm trying to figure out what I want to put in it. It's already set up for a small block so swapping in a newer, healthier small block (a 383) would be easy (and practical). I'm also eyeballing a 454 or 502 option (they would be fun). I'd like to put a Tremac 6 speed behind it. Hell... the thought of a Duramax even tiptoed through my brain... but that's a BIG can of worms! I never thought about the 8.1... this has caught my attention! Subbed...

    You don't need 4.30 gears with a torquey engine like that. It will be just as fast with a 3.70 or 3.73.

    • @shadowopsairman1583
      @shadowopsairman1583 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      3.23 is efficiency and top speed, 4.10 is acceleration but loses top speed, also 6-10 speed trans can run 3.23/3.73 even in kodiak/topkick.

  • @RL-RL
    @RL-RL 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The biggest problem with that engine is it's low rpm peak. 4,200 for peak HP is where it falls short and causes problems for being a high performance candidate.
