8.1 Swap Exhaust: Which muffler sounds better in this Silverado?

  • This will be the last part of Stage One of the LS to 8.1 swap in UglyTruck, my 2000 Silverado 1500 2WD. She started out life as a regular old LS 5.3 and 4L60 drivetrain, and now it's an 8.1 big block attached to a 4L80 transmission, and is ready to hit the road. In this upload, I attach the stock manifolds to the 5.3 catalytic converters and mid pipe and then to my custom 4" stainless cat-back I made back when the truck still had the 5.3 under the hood. On a NBS V8 Silverado and Sierra, the LS and Big block share the same spacing on the mid-pipe which makes it easy to adapt the old exhaust to the new manifolds, all I had to do was weld on one flange.
After I drove the truck for a while, I did get a little bored with the original muffler I had (a 26" long Hushpower) so I had to swap it out for something a little more aggressive sounding. This is my favorite GMT800 truck I've owned, and soon, it'll have quite a bit more power. But thats a story for another day.

I have a 2014 Sierra crew cab 4x4 with the 5.3, and I changed from a flowmaster 40 series to a spintech 9000 series muffler setup. The flowmaster seemed to get quiet as the rpms increased and there wasn't much for highway cruising sound. The spintech, which I found very few reviews on youtube itself, seemed to grab my attention the most. The 9000 series is their most aggressive sound they have, and I am more than pleased with the sound throughout the rpm range. It is aggressive when you hit the go pedal, yet still tame enough to carry on a conversation inside without any annoying drone, also carrying a pleasant cruising tone. Honestly, I think you would be more than pleased with this sound yourself, we are kinda close in age range, so our interest in exhaust sound is likely similar.

I'm going to save it, and the way the tail pipe was extended, all I have to do is make one cut and the big muffler will slide right back in. Plus, it has its own hangers already welded on, so a simple swap should the time come.

You should do the 8.1 intake mod. I’ve seen it on youtube a few times. You cut off the bottom of the intake manifold and cut out the insides to free up a lot of flow. Then weld the bottom back on.

I'll be the dissenter. Not much difference between them, but I would lean towards preferring the old muffler. I don't like any "throatiness" or high pitch notes on a truck, really prefer smooth and deep, closer to a train engine.
I have a similar setup, Vortec 454 in a '98 Chevy. 3" pipes off each cylinder bank to a dual 3" inlet single 4" outlet Y pipe, then a single 4" Flowmaster 60 series. No cats. Very deep sound, really like it.

hollow out the cats and theres a spacer you can put on the O2 sensors that resembles an anti-fouler like you would use on a spark plug. no tune necessary because all it does is move the sensor out of the exhaust flow, while still keeping the sensor in a place where it will still get enough heat to send a good signal. LT toss the 4” exhaust, 3” is more than enough for the 8.1L in stock or modified form. Keep the ignore the emissions haters cats are not an issue and they’ll keep your tunes in check by giving you realizable O2 numbers for tuning and troubleshooting if an engine issue rises. The best sound will likely be a dual 2-1/2” exhaust system X-Pipe with cats is best, if it’s not 2-1/2” summit sells any size cats up to 5” and you can weld up the pipes for a (Y), (H) or (X) configuration. The larger you go in exhaust the quieter it will be especially with mufflers!!!
