In regard to the save issue, this is caused by the game cartage battery being dead. Replacing this should resolve the issue.

    • @FlyingFlygon13

yeah pretty bad misinformation, I hate when big channels don't research enough on basic things before putting a video out in the world. Saving works 100% the same as real cartridges. His battery is just dead. He wouldn't be able to save on his Gameboy Color either until he replaces it.
Edit: it's not intentional misinformation. They just missed the mark to research that point. I definitely don't think they meant to make it look worse than it is.

Misinformation is a very extreme word, I'm pretty sure they were not trying to misinform the public. Hell I didn't even know the cartridge could default to that state, would have been more useful if the game told me why I can't save anymore.

@@brixan... Yeah it is biased for sure. but not necessarily in a bad way. instead of being biased towards a product omitting comments due a sponsor, event etc. , it instead focuses on how someone who actually has a use case for a device that may be niche for a typical user, can enjoy it. To me this offers a more meaningful review as I can see somone who the product is made for actually enjoying the device.
Would i ever purchase a newer gameboy that focuses on playing the actual games rather than emulation? nope, as all my gameboy games have been lost to the evil known as garage sale. but I enjoy the fact that this product exists and seeing a review from somone who enjoys using it rather than just reviewing it like all other tech products is a breath of fresh air.

Saving works. You need to replace your cartridge battery. You won't be able to save on your GBC either because the battery is dead.
FPGA is not just a hardware chip that runs the cartridge, it's a reprogrammable chip at the hardware level. FPGAs are used in all sorts of applications including the production of chips for integrated systems (testing hardware level components before actually producing dedicated chips for them, etc). In gaming, they are useful because an entire integrated system, such as a Gameboy's motherboard and components, can be written in hardware language and modeled at the circuit level using the FPGA. This means there is a virtual cartridge bus and IO circuit running on the FPGA chip, which is what actually communicates with the pins on the real game cartridges.
That being said, I'm not just a hater haha and thank you for the video. Love this system and Gameboys in general so I want to make sure the right information is out there.

The battery roll thing actually works, don’t know how much but because batteries can get oxidized it will give less power and by rolling the batteries the oxidized part which most of the times are just thin layers gets cleaned a little bit so the little bit of charge that gets stuck can flow through.

    • @adityakhabiya5348
      @adityakhabiya5348 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      It's not quite that...
A dry cell works because of chemicals in it that react slowly through a porous layer, providing steady charge over time.
When you give it a shake, any remaining reactants react, giving that ounce of charge.

Hey Adam, the reason why your game is not saving is because the battery in your cartridge is dead. Common problem with the GBC Pokemon games since they are pretty old(my Crystal had same problem). It's one of those circle batteries. If you replace it then you can save the game. Problem is it requires soldering.

The P in FPGA is for Programmable. Using FPGAs (Field Programmable Gate Arrays) does not negate they can be used to run emulators. The emulators run by the Analogue Pocket are presumably written in Verilog or VHDL which are programming languages focused on hardware abstraction. However, whether writing an emulator in C, or Verilog, or assembly, they're still emulators. Since it isn't also running an OS with userland abstractions, and kernels and schedulers, FPGA level emulators tend to be very performant and work well within more constrained memory than higher level programming languages. They are really best suited to hardware prototyping, or limited run bespoke hardware, since the same VHDL, if demonstrated in a successful prototype, can be "taped out" in silicon at scale much more economically, and usually there are additional performance and power utilization improvements from a real hardware implementation, whereas the field programmable gates actually add a lot of logic relative to die size and are rather power hungry and inefficient and slow in contrast to fully realized hardware.
Nonetheless, when Analogue or the MiSTer users claim they are not emulating hardware? That is a bald faced lie. They are unequivocally emulators. The Amiga Vampire FPGA accelerators I think are significantly more honest, insomuch as not only are they accessories for existing hardware which enhance and speed up old systems, but they even made up a fictional MC68080 CPU core for their FPGA which Motorola never made and it has additional functionality which specifically benefits their users.
Without reviewing the modules for the Analogue Pocket which profess to also support the PC-Engine/TurboGrafx-16, I think also does this review a disservice.

Adam has good tastes in Pokemon! Glad the Pocket got covered, been looking forward to this device for a while

I’m wondering why this isn’t something Nintendo would be trying to sue them over? So cool that you can buy this though!

    I. Still have red, silver, and crystal and this would be much better than using old GB color

On the waiting list for this... not shipping til 2023! :( But it looks beautiful! I wish I had money (at the time) to order all the cables which come with it too for doing chiptune stuff/link cable for trading, etc! Very costly but I miss my GB/GBA games!
