Movies That Were Obviously Cursed

  • There are hard movies. Then, there are cursed movies: movies that God - or the universe, if you prefer - absolutely detest. How badly? To the point that even the specifically targets these movies for destruction - there are literal Acts of God.
    In this video, I talk about five movies that were so difficult and painful to make, it's a wonder that they got made at all. But underlying them all is one thing that's common amongst all of us: ambition. The directors behind these movies have it in spades.
    00:00 Intro
    01:14 Fitzcarraldo
    07:05 The Island of Dr. Moreau
    13:40 The Man Who Killed Don Quixote
    18:03 Roar
    21:00 Apocalypse Now
    22:15 Ambition Breeds Creativity

    Roar is insanity. Pure insanity. And i say wasnt worthy, the movie is bad.

      I'm surprised that Marshall ended up go through with it all. Surely he must've realized at some point that the money he was putting into it would never be seen again.

      Well, anyone who signed on, knowing they’d be doing scenes with wild, totally untrained predators were clearly certifiable.

      @@troodon1096 It's such a wild dedication, though, it's hard to not admire it. Any reasonable man (or couple, in this case) would've given up at the idea stage because it's so insane.

    The thing about Don Quixote is that the movie he ended up making was very different than the one he set out to make. It’s virtually a different film

    Jeez! Great stories here. Maybe you should have saved Fitzcarraldo for the end because I don't think any of the other films were as insane as that production. Maybe Apocalypse Now comes close.

    Unlike other films on this list, Roar wasnt even remotely worth the trouble. You can barely call it a movie. It's more like bunch of improvised scenes loosely connected to each other. I found it a real chore to sit through. Hedren and Marshall were really into nature conservation in africa but I dont see how almost feeding their children to the lions was supposed to help with that. Except giving the lions a lunch. 😁
    I my only though after it was what kind of parents endanger their children like that?! Pure madness.

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  19 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      Yup. Wildly insane. As I watched it and researched it, I found myself mostly thinking about John & Jerry Marshall and Melanie Griffith, and what they thought about what their parents put them through. Hedren already knew how difficult live animals were, but this one really pushed the limit. The fact that everyone survived is a miracle.
      But the whole thing was so insane and everything went so wrong, that I couldn't not include it lol

    The island of dr moreau should be remade. It still has the potential to be good. Dune part one already proves that it can happen. The only movies that deserve a remake are mediocre movies that have the potential to be greater.

      Amusingly, the '96 movie is the third adaptation. There was one in 1977, and another in 1932, which Wells himself thought was terrible.
      But I agree, this one should get another chance. There's a good version in there somewhere.

    • @troodon1096
      @troodon1096 12 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Honestly the 1977 version was probably the best, but that's not saying much. I think it's up there with a story that could still be served well with a decent adaptation.

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I think any reason they give would be a cover for the true reason, which is potentially genuine insanity. Because there's definitely a way to make a movie like Roar without so many injuries. They ended up using the worst and most expensive way (they sold all their houses and it got to the point where Tippi Hedren was selling off clothes to keep the production alive).

  • @RicoCosta317

    • @Syntopikon
      @Syntopikon  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Alas, I'm not sure there were many after the fact. I think there were some early on because they were housing the animals illegally or improperly or something, but they were still able to make the movie. Irrespective, it was wildly irresponsible, especially after experts told them it wouldn't work.
