Movies That Ruined Studios
If a production studio is wise, they'll have a few flops throughout their life. If they're unwise, they'll have so many of them, that they'll need to close up shop because the losses are too high. Here, we explore the latter.

I mean, im not gonna defend Pearl Harbor, but ppl saying it was inacurate because it didnt have the real names of ppl.... welp, welcome to Hollywood. They dont have to give real names because these dudes are just depicting them. Not only that, no critic was there. No one was there or almost no one now, so of corse dialog is going to be changed alittle. People making these movies werent there standing beside these men. Its a movie. Also notice, how none of the critics will ever say what the inaccuracies are. They just say, "it was sencationalized, over dramatic etc." Ok how about you explain it then because the point of pearl Harbour was to show the opening attack. All the rest is.... Hollywood, yes, for drama, to make a movie. Most who go see these wat movies probably since highschool already know the story. They just want to see the action. Just like saving private ryan. No one thinks the whole movie is accurate. Hell, it was a fake story. What we wanted to see was D-Day landings. And thats what we got. Instead, critics go, "seesee, this isnt even real!" ..... noooo shit
Say what you want about superman 4 but anyone else miss superman carrying around a mountain? We never get that coolness anymore
While I'm not a fan of AI-generated anything, this isn't bad. I'm rediscovering Steely Dan. #ToddlerTrump
Ok this is really interesting. But you REALLY need to work on your delivery. Slow down. And speak with SOME emotion. You're just reading off a script and it sounds like you just want to finish. Relax.
Well, they are movies after all, meant for entertainment purposes. They're not documentaries.
Was there someone that thought 10000 BC was a "historical" movie??? Really??
Indy 5 was rejected because of how it disrespected the character. The ‘audiences don’t want to see old Indiana Jones’ is an excuse that fans like myself vehemently reject
Americans stealing the achievements of other nations, what a surprise. Trump has already done it when he claimed the atom was first split in the US. It was first achieved at Manchester University in the UK.
Those Sirectors really messed up. BAD. They should be MOCKED for years. We should make them feel like SHIT.
The new Indiana Jones movie SUCKED.
Boy, they musta felt DUMB!! Really STUPID!!!
Hahahahahaha THEY SUCK ASS😅
TH-cam Shorts facts channels suck. Majority of them are full of shit, making up stories for content.
Where was Cutthroat Island!?!? It sank Carolco Studio. Budget 98 million boxoffice of 10 million. Thanks for the video
Travolta was a bigger star than Willis
This movie inspired me to buy an original Ingram Mac 10 SMG. I prefer the Cobray M-11 SMG after having both.
Heavens Gate has entered the chat:
Crazy how people will make entire edits just to flat out lie. What’s even crazier is the truths behind Willis getting the role is way more interesting.
Yes, but I watched it because it was a Tarantino film. They could have replaced Bruce Willis with Peter Griffin, and I would still watch it.
Internet is full of lies😂
Tarantino was ecstatic when Willis said gimme! The film would not have been 'the' film without the fly in the ointment, the monkey on the wrench, He delivered a lesson on losing his LA privilege that the world will never forget., p.s. I thought the fearless narrator's delivery more than adequate, a gem of oral pleasure , even.
We all know that’s you on a fake account bro give it up
It's beautiful Capra got the see his film get the respect later on.
Yup. It's something that not everyone gets to see, but I'm glad some do.
I guess bad info is better than none..sure wish they would've just STFU..😊😊
The Right Stuff was fantastic it's so good it's a brilliant exciting movie.
Not to mention just great to look at. I want more movies like this.
Objective:Burma! is one of Errol Flynn's best War movies, but it also greatly downplayed Britain's chief involvement in the WWII conflict, to the point where the film was withdrawn from U.K. movie theaters based on the rightly infuriated British public.
Cannon Fims’ issue was the fact that approximately 53.789% of their budget was spent on cocaine. See: “Invasion USA” for Exhibit 1. But seriously the 10 movie Cannon pack is amazing. Also, if you see the security guard get crushed by a van around the 9:30 mark, that wasn’t a special effect. And no, he didn’t know that was going to happen.
Just found a bunch of movies to watch. Thanks!
literally the small hat stereotype
Haha wtf are you talking about. Bruce Willis was begging to get into the film
even thinking about Neo a woman is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard Little alone actually pursuing the idea
Wow, at 2:40 how dare you suggest Michael Bay use CGI in one of his films?? You know about his dedication to practical effects
You're right. Mea culpa 😔 But really, though, if it was Christopher Nolan, I wouldn't be surprised if half the budget would've gone to creating actual, giant Autobots and Decepticons.
@@Syntopikon I love your channel and have learned a lot here, so I'm giving you a pass on this one. Keep up the good work!! 😂☺
The Fast and Furious franchise that should have been gone with Paul Walker
Yup. 7 was the last good one.
"Method" backwards = d'oh! T'em
It's strange that the Ladd company distributed both Blade Runner and Once Upon a Time in America as both of those movies they cut down to shorter run times. And given how both movies have had multiple versions released since then it shows that maybe some movies are made to be long.
Yup. It's interesting, as the Ladd Company was willing to finance some films that would, eventually, be revered. Blade Runner might just be the most important movie of the 80s, after all. I think audiences are fine sitting for long movies, if they feel it's worth it. Everytime I watch LOTR, it feels like no time has passed because I'm completely engrossed.
@@SyntopikonThey need to add intermission though because i need to pee
Outland was A1
When I saw the subject of this video "Raise the Titanic" was first on my list. A beautifully researched bestseller that was savaged by an adaptation by Eric Hughes. Adam Kennedy then wrote the screenplay based on this piece of crap.Don't think that this was the only Cussler novel that made it to the big screen. "Sahara" also sank like a stone.
Yup, Sahara is the other big one I can think of. Adaptations of his work were like the anti-Crichton. It's a shame, really. Both movies have something interesting in there, but neither are executed half as well as they should've been.
Another notable movie that could fit into this topic is Titan A.E. IMO it’s a pretty underrated sci-fi movie, but Fox didn’t know how to market it properly, 2D animation was becoming less popular, and it was plagued with multiple rewrites and reshoots, causing it to flop, losing Fox over $100 million, which then caused their animation studio to close TEN DAYS after it came out. It wasn’t exactly the best sci-fi movie, but it was enjoyable nonetheless.
Sad to see "It's a Wonderful Life" being panned so much - when in fact it's story is realistic, most average people are actually decent folks. Also sad to see an honorable project like "The Right Stuff" being scoffed at and sinking it's studio.
Just goes to show that even back then, Critics were out of touch with the general public.
And how about Carolco Pictures & Cutthroat Island?
CarolCo & Cutthroat is a good one. I had covered it in a previous video, which is why I didn't include it here. Same with Heaven's Gate & UA.
According to WW II pilots here in Australia,we they were the ones that sunk U571.
Have never watched any of these😢 but enjoyed the video as usual 👌🏼 This make think how Coppola is not broke.
"john waynes insulting portrayal" who cares if its insulting towards him? no one would cry if a portrayal of hitler was "insulting"
Another good video. I have a few comments. First, I sure do love a good epic. And as you say, while we still get films that broadly fall into that category, they are not like the pre-CGI epics of the Golden Age. There is something about those films that is not only awesome, but also very nostalgic. The great sense of adventure combined with the Technicolor look creates a sense of wonder that films today can't match. I have Ben-Hur, Cleopatra, The Ten Commandments and Gone with the Wind on Blu-Ray, and there are several more that i would like to add to the collection. I have not seen The Fall of the Roman Empire but now I want to check it out. Second, it is a real shame that The Right Stuff is the film that ultimately sank the Ladd Company. That's a great movie that many regard as a classic today, myself included. Third, oh man, Cannon Films. I will always be indebted to them for their hand in either producing or distributing so many great action and martial arts classics back in the day and for giving Van Damme his big break. Bloodsport and Kickboxer, Revenge of the Ninja, and American Ninja 1 and 2 were among my favorite films growing up. More recently, I've also come to appreciate Chuck Norris's Delta Force. Thanks, Golan and Globus!
Perhaps you did this to save time with the video, but Cannon's decline was not only down to Superman IV. Their three big films that year (meaning films where they spent more than their usual budgets) all flopped in 1987. Over The Top came out in February, and flopped bigger than the other two movies did. Superman IV came out in July and, as you mentioned, flopped. Then Masters of the Universe (rumoured to be the film they spent the stolen portion of the budget from Superman IV on) was the final nail in the coffin. Actually Superman IV was the most successful of the three films, so why are we laying all the blame on Superman IV?
Possibly your best work yet. Many of these films I’d never heard of
yes, because they ruined studios lol
Heavens Gate is also a notorious movie that ruined its production company. Cimino is brat.
In fact, this is an exaggerated fact. For United Artists was sold to MGM for over 300 million dollars.
Interesting how the old superman and batman movies are similarly: The first is a classic, with a beloved ost and a Hollywood legend as the main villain. The second are still liked but had issues during the production (Richard donner firing and the darker tone in returns). The third one is there, no one really likes but also no one really hates it. And there the fourth one, a tragedy in movie form thanks to the studio.
Pretty much lol. Nolan has been the only one to break that so far for Warner. They could've done something really good with DC, but they tried to catch up to Marvel and fell flat on their face instead.
What upsets me the most is that the love of Christopher Reeve's to Superman IP. Man was clearly having the most of fun in his acting career with the character. Shame that he never got to play the gig again. Although I love his Smallville cameo.
Yup - that was a great cameo. One thing that's certain is that DC's mismanagement of their IP goes back decades and certainly isn't anything new. There was also a pretty great documentary about Reeves recently. Would recommend it.
Between him, Routh, and Cavill, the experience of playing Superman is basically: Sign onto your dream role, get tons of fame and acclaim, but the movies disappoint in some way and Warner sucks so hard that they end up forcing you out of playing the character any further. Really hope that David Corenswet is done right this time
That's actually not that far off. Something of a curse, too. Christopher Reeve didn't only want to be Superman - he wanted to do other kinds of roles. But the role was so legendary, he got typecast like Mark Hamill did with Luke Skywalker. Brandon Routh could've had more film roles, but the underwhelming nature of Superman: Returns cut that short, too. And while Cavill has been in other movies, the last 10 years have been somewhat disappointing - I don't think he's been utilized as well as he could've been.
@ yeah I feel really bad for Routh and Cavill, Cavill especially given that they also forced him out of the Witcher. He’s a really good actor, I absolutely adored his work in Mission: Impossible-Fallout, but he just is not getting the work he should be getting
@@SyntopikonIf we’re talking about the “Curse of Superman”, let’s not forget George Reeves His commitment and dedication to the role was so intrenched, he not only refused to smoke (I remember hearing he quit smoking but can’t find a reliable source) to be a positive role model to children, but he was able to (supposedly) deescalated an almost deadly situation: *said situation* a young child raising his dad’s revolver to see ‘Superman’s invulnerability’ first hand, George then improvized that the bullet would rebound into the crowd of people, convincing the child to handover the fire arm Unfortunate how his life came to an end as from what is known about him, he came across as a stand up gentleman
About four minutes in, and I’m just ”WTF?!”. Ford vs Ferrari ”probably the best racing movie” = c’mon ffs! Here’s a guy who REALLY NEEDS to watch ”Le Mans” from 1971 starring Steve McQueen, and ”Grand Prix” from 1967 starring James Garner - and the masterpiece stop motion animated (just as wonderful as it is brilliant) ”Flåklypa Grand Prix” (or ”The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix”) from 1975. THE three greatest racing movies of all time.
The amount of movie knowledge you get from this channel is so cool.
Glad you like it - thanks!
With every video you upload I learn more about how the movie industry works, you deserve more subs dude
He's such a straight forward channel I love digesting all of it
I'm glad you enjoy it, and thanks for the kind words! They're very much appreciated.
The idea of mammoth over-hunting is still very much up for debate. It's a favorite trope of classical depictions of early European people, but if it happened at all it did so sparingly and certainly not actively. Rather, people probably used pits with spikes to trap them and even that could obviously be extremely risky. Given the choice, people would rather hunt deer or bovines.
6:28 the documentary Our Man In Tehran was awesome, the real guy Affleck played in Argo was in it and agrees with what you said. And thank you for bringing it up cause as a Canadian this bothers me a lot. Also Ken Taylor in real life was a real character. He was incredibly underutilized and that doc also highlights this.
