  • The Herriot Way is a 52-mile long distance path that takes in the very best of the Yorkshire Dales National Park.
It was inspired by the famous vet and author Alf Wright, better known by his pseudonym of James Herriot, and visits many places associated with him. The walk is designed to be completed in four stages but we took an extra half day to allow for travel time.
It's a circular route so it can be started from any point - we chose to start from the Aysgarth Falls car park as a car can be left there for a week.
There's plenty of accommodation along the way, including campsites, bed and breakfasts and even Youth Hostels, so you can break it up how you choose - or walk it a bit at a time.
Although the Herriot Way isn't signed, it follows well-used rights of way and is easy to follow. We packed up after our epic wild camp and climbed onto Melbecks Moor, where we found ourselves in an almost lunar-like landscape.
The rain cleared up as we reached Healaugh and we had some field walking into Reeth. We were staying the night in Grinton Lodge Youth Hostel, a short distance beyond Reeth.
I walked the Herriot Way with @ramblingracheltrailtales - check out her channel for loads of great content.

I've just walked all 4 of your Herriot Way vids Steph, a lovely journey that you've both undertaken through wind, rain and sun from Aysgarth to Grinton. I love the Yorkshire Dales, so it was nice to watch these. Glad you spent a bit of time in Reeth, my favourite Dales village. Look forward to part 5 👍

Thanks Patrick, it was an amazing trail and I'd highly recommend it, the scenery was so varied from green pastures, moorland and old mine workings.
I love Reeth, it was nice to spend more time there than on my last visit which was a bit rushed

Hey Steph, love the video and I really enjoyed this section of the trail. The wild camp spot was amazing despite the rain. 😊

Thanks Rachel - thinking about it, I think the mining landscape looked better in the mist and rain - more fitting and atmospheric somehow.
It certainly was the most amazing spot I've ever camped in! 😀
