When Sammy added that "Yeeeeeeeeeessss!!!" at the end of the tune, the audience applause had swelled to a higher degree of satisfactory approval! 👏👏👏👌👍 FYI: That wonderful ending was a big surprise out of the blue for the audience and people at home watching, & Sammy had never rehearsed that part of the tune! There you have it! DY-NO-MIIIIIIITE!!!
This aired Feb. 2, 1964--a week before The Beatles' first Sullivan appearance. But I consider this one of the finest and most signifiant moments in the show's 23-year run.
“Be sure to tune in next Sunday night when Ed’s guests are Mitzi McCall, Frank Gorshin, the cast from the Broadway hit, “Oliver”, and some from England called THE BEATLES”
Loved this ICONIC DUET! Saw it on "Ed Sullivan Special." Thanks for posting. He really admired her & wanted to perform with her! Seemed like both were so overwhelmed.

2/2/64: What many people considered to be the greatest moment on the Ed Sullivan show up to that time. However, "that time" only lasted a week. For on the very next show......
Sammy Davis, jr. An all-time great performer. He is sitting there admiring Ella. And he is looking at her like "How in the heck does she do that"? When you can make soneone as great as Sammy look at you like that....I mean wow.
I remember this episode of Ed's when I was 15 years old and I fell in love with both Ella and Sammy. I've seen them both live, Sammy on Broadway and Ella at Dangerfield's in NYC. I miss this kind of talent. These kids today can't touch this. Rap is all they know and everybody sounds the same.
@@michaelwoodward9894 no I doubt it , Sammy paid his dues defining his craft and talent , it was a much different experience and time back then and will never be duplicated again . Just like the movie studio system of the past.

Ella stating that Sammy Davis Jr. was "T-A-L-E-N-T" at the beginning of this video really says something about how incredible Sammy truly was.
Ed Was A Visionary. He could see the future, IMO. You can tell by his comments
Two of the greatest icons of American music: Sammy and Ella! Oh how I wish they had more performances together. 🥰

Watching and listening to this just lifts my spirit. Ella and Sammy - what a delight.

February 2, 1964: The Beatles appeared on Ed Sullivan the next week. This performance is truly classic.
This cut Sammys verse before they started scatting though. He was so excited when he got the idea that they’d both scat 8 bars each.
I wish someone will post the full version of this...

Just caught this on Decades rerun of Ed Sullivan and had to come find it here. Beautiful sweet duet 💙😍🥰

Real talent from two legends 😀
WOW!!
NOTE: Listen to "Basella" with Count Basie and Ella Fitzgerald and also Ella's rendition of "What's Going On," Marvin Gaye's classic. AWESOME!!!!
So sweet
Sammy and his relatives probably did not have much in the way of schooling, but these men were so elegant they put rap singers of today to shame.
