As one of the best 80's action films ever, Predator should need no introduction. A license tie--in was sure to follow and, sure enough, here it is.
What is very interesting is that there are multiple versions of this game, which I didn't know about. According to info on the net, there are "slow" and "fast" versions of the game.
The "fast" version, as the title suggests, runs much faster than the slow version, but is really a run-and-gun shooter that follows the plot of the film. This was the version that I owned on my C64 back in the day and also the version that I tried to complete a longplay for initially. Unfortunately, I'm not sure it can be completed (see reason why later).
The "slow" version is visually and sonically identical to the "fast" version, but the gameplay is much slower, probably too slow and might explain why the separate "fast" version exists; I'm guessing either the developer or publisher thought the slowness would be a turn-off for gamers.
In the "slow" version, the predator appears by leaping out of the air and decloaking in dramatic fashion. In the "fast" version, he simply walks in from the right of the screen.
The "slow" version has an inventory at the top of the screen and it's possible to loot caches for extra items. Caches can contain extra ammo, bullet-proof vests and other items; these can be used by pressing the corresponding function key. The "fast" version has no inventory and no caches.
In the final scene of the game, you have to kill the predator using the log suspended from a tree, just like the film. In the "slow" version, you stand next to the rope and pull down on the joystick and Arnie hoists the log up. You hit the predator (or avoid it) and when it appears on the right side of the screen, pull down on the joystick next to the log and spring the trap. Time it correctly and it will hit the predator and you can exit to the right. In the "fast" version, you can't pull on the rope and you can't exit to the right without killing the predator first. I think you might have to punch it to death, but didn't have the health to have a stand up fight with it.
This longplay was recorded using the "slow" version.
There's an interesting scene in the penultimate level where you're crossing the muddy swamp and the predator's 3 red dots appear. If you pull down on the joystick, you crouch in the mud and Arnie's sprite visibly darkens as he gets caked in mud. If you stop moving, the red dots move away as the predator can't see you. Unfortunately, you take damage from standing in the swamp and are likely to be worse off than just taking the hit from the predator.
In terms of pure gameplay, it has problems. It's difficult not to get hit by enemy bullets as they can fire up and down the playfield and the controls are clunky, particular when considering that you'd need to operate a joystick AND keyboard. All this makes it too damn hard to try and play it for real.
However, it is actually quite exceptional considering the fact it follows the film plot closely, with all the memorable scenes recognisable and, for all its faults, playable.

Actually this game is alot better than the nes version
In 1988 the reward for beating a game was to see the graphics turn static and to have the honor of putting your name in as "Ass" in the high score record.

Count yourself lucky to even have THAT much, some games back then would just hurl you back to the title screen!
This game promised much more than it delivered.

@@SpinDoctor91 Exactly. For an 8 bit machine, they did a good job with the graphics and animation. The criticism I have, they tried overcomplicating the game play and the sound effects is like someone drilling into your head. A shoot them up format would've worked similar to Commando.

That's not a good job at all, compare these visuals to games like Antiriad, Last Ninja or Barbarian, they all came out the same year or earlier and are worlds ahead graphically.

This brings back memories. I can't count how many C64 games were truly garbage but yet I still enjoyed playing them.
I had a C64 but the only games I enjoyed were the AD&D games and the Gold Box games.
It was probably due to the fact that we didn't have a choice - these were the only games available to us, so we persevered with them, despite them being rubbish!
So THAT'S what the end of this looked like...
God, I wasted so much time on this game as a kid!

I can't think of a single other C64 game that used the foreground like that. I thought it was the coolest thing ever
I had the PAL release and got stuck at the end. Couldn't lift the log after so many attempts and now 35yrs later I stumbled on this. Even though it's a massive anticlimax, thanks for going through the trouble of uploading it..👍

I remember being so excited about buying this game back in the day (the European version). Not only was it insanely difficult, at least to my childhood years, but the game was nothing short of awful underneath. Just found nothing to enjoy in this one.
That being said - well played on beating this and revealing that I wouldn't have been able to beat the European version either way. Glad I didn't try too hard back then when I heard that. Great to see the ending to this one all these years later.

This game came bundled with a few other Activision games together with my c64. I played it so much, I was always pissed off that my Highscore wasn't saved, until I learned more about the technology and I found out that the Disk was write protected 🤦🏻♂️
My pleasure ;) In fact, doing these longplays it's actually quite irritating to learn that the publishers/developers were ripping us off by selling us games that couldn't be completed. I had the "fast" version as part of an 8-game multipack collection, but I have no idea who sold the "slow" version or how you could possibly tell from the packaging as to which version it was.
It remids me TMNT for MS-DOS and its impossible jump.
It was an awful nasty horrible game!
I thought this was pretty atmospheric and neat little shooter, although too difficult for me - and the opening intro got me excited when I first saw it.
Thank you very much for your upload. I always wanted to see the "end". I used to play the fast version, but did not know what to do against the final enemy. The game had terrific grafics for it's time and the atmosphere was great. Unfortunately I watched the movie after playing the game, but played again thereafter. Thanks again for the upload!
The Predator looks like a deep sea diver. It's nice to see the ending regardless. Yet another c64 game that I never finished.

Man oh man, the title screen artwork is incredible!
Imagine the insane coding to produce this. I remember only having an air baloon to fly over the screen was a tedious process, that took forever to write. Also the limited color palette of 16 main colors in different brightness made the programmers to come up with things like "dithering" and interlacing to replicate a bigger color scheme. Back in those days you had to use your imagination to understand what you actually saw on the screen. 😆
I was probably a smart kid, because after 15 minutes with this game, I never came back to it xD

The loading of the cassette version of this game took about 30 minutes, and then every time you died in the game, you had to watch the entire loading sequence again before a new try. This made it the most tedious game ever to play. Also, why no music in-game?

Can't help but to think this would be loads better if it was a bit more like Airborne Ranger. Gosh, I loved that game. This one doesn't look nearly as fun, but the concept of being hunted by the Predator while going about otherwise standard military operations is a neat one.

I never knew what to do after going in the mud lol I always only had a little bit of life left but never knew how to finish the game, remember when it used to take about 20 mins to load? haha

I could always get to the final battle and then had no idea what to do. Really good graphics for a game with no real ending. They should’ve had the explosion and show the “choppa” taking off.

Oh wow, there actually was an ending of sorts! We just got a “game over” on the Atari ST and no way to kill the predator!

I think the "Fast" version had a proper ending screen...but you would never see it since you can't kill the Predator in that version ;D

Cute little game. I had Aliens, Predator and Die Hard from the same development house, I think - and beat them all. They did a reasonable job with the cinematics and atmosphere on all three.

I may have missed it in your playthrough, but I seem to remember a flame thrower which would get the predator to leave you alone- I could never figure out what to do at the end, though...
This is the US version, right? Correct me if I am wrong but isn't there also european version with slightly different graphics and intro? I think that I heard that european version had a bug which made lifting the log in the end impossible and therefore finishing the game impossible too. Was there ever a working european version? Maybe cracked+fixed one?
KarpowSCX Check out the video description - I put most of the info in there :) To answer your question though, yes, this is the US "slow" version. The "fast" European version cannot be completed because you simply can't lift the log (which I discovered only after playing it to the end...). I'm not sure if there is a cracked/fixed Euro version - I'll have a look at some point.

There was a glitch in this game where if you had the mud camo and the mini gun when you encountered the predator that first time, you could keep shooting and he couldn't go off in the trees. You killed it and the game froze.

Played this when I was 12! I had seen the posters and knew the general idea, but predator's sudden three red dots scared the hell out of me! Was a good 4 years before I saw the awesome movie and by then I'd kinda forgottent this game (same with platoon, come to think of it!)

I bought this game when I was 11 years old. I could never figure out the last level. I spent hours and hours jumping around and pressing every freaking button on my keyboard and never realized that there was a rope and that the tree trunk came down on the predator. There was no google, no internet, absolutely nothing to help me.
Same here! Apparently some versions are bugged and you can't use the rope so you can never finish it!

Does the radio have any signifigance in any of the versions? (ST,AMIGA,C64?)
Yes. If you don't pick up the radio you can't leave the final screen after smashing the Predator with the log. You can't leap off the screen. So you need the radio. The radio symbolizes that you can call for the rescue chopper and fly away.... Still, very anti-climatic. Up until the end this game was not bad back in the day.
This was a quality game for the 80's.
Maybe for the early 80s but this was published late 80s.

My most horrible childhood memories from this game was the fact on the c64 if you died...you couldn't just hit the start button!...nope you had to restart the game from scratch...ie load the game again which took approximately 45 minutes! The game unfortunately got chucked out of my bedroom window and smashed lol
Finally seen how to finish the ending! Would always get to end and just would die by never ending spawn of predators! Never figured out tree!!

all I can do is jump. I have keyset a mapped to : up arrow down arrow left arrow right arrow space for joysticks but nothing works. this really sucks
I think I got it in 1990. It took me several hours to load and copy the game because the tape was damaged or something. I loved the movie, but I hardly played the game because it was so bad! :)

I thought that the Predator would go ka-boom in the end and a helicopter would come to the major's rescue, that said, it looks like it was an awesome game for its time.
I never knew there was a game to predator.
I had this game back in the day and the disk must have been damaged because I couldn't get the log to work. Never did finish it.

Those are the exact words I use when I choose to play some of these really impossible old games :D I'm also a goddamn sexual Tyrannosaurus, but that's really too much information ;)

....I missed that part from the movie when Dutch killed single handedly the hole rebel compound...according to the game developers he did that and after that have 3 grade encounters with the Predator ....cojones. I miss so much the eighties....
I'm afraid the answers are all consigned to the past - we'll never know. I'd guess that someone did a hatchet job on the "slow" version to speed it up and package it up for the European market and probably assumed that they wouldn't have broken something as important as the ability to kill the Predator...

The fact the Contra released to the NES shortly after this, and was good as it was on a supposedly less powerful platform, means there was no excuse for how bad this game was.
The Predator IR-tracking scenes are the only good thing about this game.

As much as I enjoyed games back then, movie tie-ins we’re just about making money off the movie and very little care or thought was taken to produce quality games. Not all were bad but most were.
It looks like a modern indie game: hard for hard sake and without a save system.

The tone and atmosphere of this game was fantastic although I always found the gameplay rather stale. Like my fellow gamers, I only had the "fast" version which couldn't be completed - god knows how many times I tried! Didn't developers thoroughly check their games back then??!!
